  2. It's the computers sending all the letters. No people involved - especially with the more stupid letters.
  3. Was the bank account type correct (e.g., business, checking)?
  4. I efiled a Form 1120 a month ago. My client had made estimated payments of $9,600. The corporate tax owed was $8,585 leaving a refund of $1,015, which should have been made via direct deposit. My client just received a CP 267 letter from the IRS asking my client what they wanted them to do with the refund. I went back and double checked the routing number and the checking account number which were all correct
  5. So many letters, so early about the least little thing! Clients are furious and afraid. Sometimes I can fix it,(like the case where the IRS tried to draw from the wrong account); sometimes I can"t. On the other hand, a miracle happened. A gal came in with a return that she had attempted to do on Turbo Tax. Married filing Separately, mind you. It was a total mess. Apparently TT lets you import your W2. Well, don't try that! Numbers were all incorrect. She was getting a very large refund according to her return. The IRS said NOT SO! I did an amendment on the return and the miracle was that it was accepted on the first filing. Actually she owes a large amount which just gets added to the payment plan that she already has active. Reason for the MFS. This was a new marriage and they didn't know what to do. Needless to say, she won't be trying that again. One more reason for me to stay active for at least one more year.
  6. A fairly decent discussion of the software can be found at https://www.reddit.com/r/taxpros/comments/1huri37/mytaxprepoffice_honest_reviews/ You may also want to look at these threads: https://www.reddit.com/r/taxpros/comments/1kanah2/software_to_consider_for_simple_1040_returns/ https://www.reddit.com/r/taxpros/comments/1ig0msu/cheap_per_return_prep_software/
  7. You might read this topic that was posted 2 weeks ago about the same issue:

  9. I'm not going to it, but it's only about 4 hours west of me. It's not impossible to have an early snowstorm in late October, but not likely. It will be chilly, though.
  10. I was looking around for a CPE seminar in Late Summer or Early Fall. NY EAs are having an education seminar in Saratoga Springs Oct 26-28. Never been to upstate NY, worried that it might be winter conditions. Any of you going? Advice for that time of year in that place? Tom Longview, TX
  11. I have written them down with asterisks replacing one or more letters in a row, with just enough characters to remind me of the password.
  12. Put it in the paper tray under the paper.
  13. That's why I am signed up for all of the IRS email notices and alerts. Even though a number of them don't apply to my practice, they keep me informed
  14. Now you have to get the ATX program to produce that same result, if it is correct, and I can't help with that.
  15. So, the side of the printer isn't acceptable either?
  16. I haven't even left yet and you already have the answers. I can never thank you enough. Some of these extensions are worse than the entire tax season in real time. Either our brains are fried or we just want to be done. So kind of you.

  18. @mcb39 Marilyn, I am coming up with a repayment of $550, and this couple would have a repayment cap of $1,900 anyway according to the figures and the table in the 8962 instructions. You can ignore names and SSNs as this is from one of Drake's practice returns that I modified to fit the purpose. Please check forms to see that I've entered dollar amounts correctly and the answers to questions about the coverage and marriage date. You can download and print the pdf, and I've attached screenshots to view on screen for anyone that may want to check my work (probably a good thing at this point, very tired after really bad last 3 days. 8962 Alt Calc-Married Nov.pdf 8962, page 2 is mostly blank except for Part V that shows this: MAGI 8962 worksheet: Alternate Calc in Yr of Marriage Eligibility Worksheet: Worksheet for Spouse Alternate Monthly Contribution Amount: Last worksheet, Alternate Calc for Year of Marriage Totals Worksheet
  19. Just write them backwards; then they'll be completely safe!
  20. We have a friend who had a matrix for passwords, that depended on the company name and a couple of other items. Once you knew the algorithm, new passwords were super easy to generate and recall - and even if you got his cheatsheet, it was utterly meaningless without knowing the algorithm. Multiple pieces had to be put together, in the right order, which varied. I wish I remembered better how it worked. Simple, elegant, inscrutable.
  21. I'll try to have an answer for you by the time you are back. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy the weekend away and not worry about this or the others on extension.
  22. I had one of these today. We had designated direct withdrawal from a checking account. The IRS tried to take it from a Savings Account that didn't have the funds. Client came in and because of what I read this morning on this board, we went to Judy's link and used Direct Pay; easy as could be. The client was so relieved. He said that he hadn't slept at all last night over this. Thanks to all of you who contributed your experiences. Before today, I didn't know about Direct Pay. This board is the BEST.
  23. I am thankful for every day that I get to open my eyes. At my age, some of that is the result of routine exams. For my husband, as well. Eight years ago, when I had breast cancer, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Both were caught very early. Last summer, I had not been breathing well for over two years before it got to be too much for me. The result was 7 days in the hospital and I am lucky to be here. The hospital Dr said that I had been sick for a long time and would have a long recovery. I am just now turning the corner and will soon be driving again for the first time since last June. I survived another tax season and am considering another one because I don't believe that my work on Earth was finished. The medical practice certainly can be annoying, but it can save your life.

  25. I had a strict rule that passwords were never to be written down, except in our password protected spreadsheet.
  26. Oil rich areas West Texas and Eastern New Mexico. Northwestern Nevada is barren north of Reno (pretty, but not very populated) and except for weed growers, I don't know who is getting rich up there. Wyoming has some cattle and the price of beef is high right now, but ranching does not normally produce consistent high income (because they always need new trucks!). Curious indeed. Tom Longview, TX
  27. I thought everyone knew that putting your password on the side of the monitor wasn't safe, you have to put it under your keyboard where it can't be seen. LOL.
