  1. It may be something as simple as one of the employees got married and their last name was changed in your client's payroll system but not in the SS system.

  2. ATX is poor at communicating. They tell me they make too many changes to communicate all of them. They already have a release notes page. Just have some low level person post as many updates as they can every day. I spend half of tax season discovering new features, sometimes by accident, and I wonder what else is there that I've missed.

  3. The last 2 or 3 years with ATX, when I had problems with the efiling of Oregon Business returns due to software glitches, I would get a response in 2 or 3 days and a fix in a week. What would upset me the most was, they would never acknowledge that a problem even existed and they would never let me know when it was fixed. All of a sudden after a week or so of waiting the problem would magically go away and I could efile.

  4. You can make an election to report the interest earned on the bonds through the date of death on the decedent's final tax return. The estate or beneficiary receiving the bonds then reports only interest earned after the date of death (Rev. Rul. 68-145). I think Pub. 559 has a discussion of this.

  5. I would let the client figure out which ones are wrong. But you can register for SSNVS (https://www.ssa.gov/employer/ssnv.htm) to check for them.

  6. Emailed Drake support on a California problem. Had a response in less than 5 minutes with a temporary fix until they could update the software the next day.

  8. Your potential problem with this scenario is "when was the investment deemed to be unrecoverable"?

  9. Here is a link to an article in CPA Practice Advisor about this issue: https://www.cpapracticeadvisor.com/payroll/article/12441373/employers-ssn-nomatch-letters-are-back

  10. I haven't had to do this myself, so with that being said, supposedly this can be checked through SSA's BSO. Log on and click "Report Wages to Social Security" and "accept" the use of that function. The next page is the EWR Homepage, and on that page you'll see a link toward the the right that says "View Employer Report Status". I hope you will report back to us if it worked or not.

  11. I have used River City for over 10 years. They are the best great people.

  12. I plan on discussing security with Centurylink before making any change. Of course, I run Microsoft Security Essentials all the time and run Malwarebytes two or three times a week as well as regular quick scans. I am as stated on a dsl line on a regular router and my current isp has there own security in place as well. I very rarely ever have any problem. I would assume Centurylink has security in place as well. Generally I use eight character passwords which use mixed caps numbers and such. I do not use the computer to link with any clients. The phone and now text messages are already more than I can handle.

  13. "Wardriving" is not as easy as it was 10 or 20 years ago, because back then no one changed the modem or router logins, and modem/router manufacturers shipped them with logins of admin and blank password. The last router I bought for home came with a supposedly unique password. The best thing you can/should do is change both the login name and password on your modem and your router, and the passwords should be long and complex. While you can have bluetooth technology on your computer, I wouldn't recommend it because it's just another access point to your network, making you less secure. You use wifi tech to connect to a wireless network, which pretty much every device has these days.

  14. I don't know as much about this as others on the forum, but I think the point about the security of the wi-fi versus a wired modem has to do with access.. If you can access your modem, and therefore your network, by using Bluetooth technology, then could someone sit in your parking lot and hack into your system using their own computer and Bluetooth? What kind of encryption does this modem your are being supplied with offer? Does it have a built in firewall? (Is that still a thing?) If your network is only accessble though a wired connection, you would notice someone tapping into ii. That said, I trust my IT people, and we are running a wi-fi network that they assure me is secure and that allows my customers to sign in as guests.

  15. WIFI is allowing the computer to connect to the internet through a wireless connection. Hardwired is connecting the modem/router to the computer using an ethernet cable. Older wired connections used a phone wire for dial-up.

  16. First year Drake user and even when ATX offered me a terrific deal I will not go back until Drake gives me a reason to! I just don't see that happening. Their support cannot be beat, their product performs for all my needs, and their price is something I can afford!
