  1. I just now helped a client who had a zero figure. My experience was the same as Judy's - we could not get it to authenticate no matter what we tried.

  2. I is not always so simple. There are some special rules for name controls: The ampersand (&) and hyphen (-) are the only special characters allowed in the name control. The name control can have fewer, but no more than four characters. Spaces or blanks are not part of a name control. For example, the name control for Joe Doe Trucking is JOED. The word “The” at the beginning of your business name is not used in your name control. Blanks may be present only at the end of the name control. Do not include "dba" as part of the name control. Other entities and Foreign names have other rules. See Pub 4164, starting around page 175.

  3. Sounds like she gave info to the scammers! File on paper with the covering rejection notice and Form 14039 and requested attachments. Police report. Consumer Protection in her state. FTC.gov/IDtheft has some good information on all the things to do. Apply for an IP PIN. Place fraud alerts with all credit agencies. Order credit reports to report errors. Freeze all credit. SSA. www.irs.gov/identitytheft.

  4. Thanks Rita. I'd say more but I'm tied up all day and am unable to type anything else.

  5. Gail, I have advised the client(s) sister to next contact the realtor/agent as she was the first one to tell the sister that a payoff amount was needed. None of them could figure out how to get that until the sister of a friend of the client's partner (got that?) suggested that I might be able to help. So I finally got the payoff figure in a fax Wednesday and immediately forwarded to sister with suggested next step - realtor/agent/mortgage company. The property itself has no mortgage, just the tax liens. I am hoping the agent can manage from here. PatHack, good Idea about seeking some abatement later. I will also suggest that to sister. I think there is time to deal with that later but the potential buyers wanted to close by March 31 and had postponed once already. I don't know where that stands now, hoping to hear from sister soon. Thanks so much for all suggestions. After nearly 30 years, this is a first for me. Really stretched me, just hope all works out for the client.

  6. My software has a space for dependent IP Pins, so I assume they are available.

  7. If you live in a state where Identity protection pins are available, and the IRS ever opens back up, perhaps in future you can get IP Pins assigned to the children so that non-custodial persons can't claim the child? I think that would be easier than changing social security numbers.

  8. I'm sorry, I just saw this. No, the penalty waiver for VA is only from MAY 1 - JUNE 1.

  9. If the child filed a tax return and claimed his/her own exemption, that return will need to be amended first. If another person claimed the child, a paper return needs to be filed. When this happens to me, I make sure to attach some proof of dependency in addition to the 8867.

  10. So that's why they charge a cleaning fee. We rented last November in Prague via AirBnb and they left us with candy, pastries, bottled water and juice to drink. When we stepped into the store downstairs the juice was on clearance for about $.25. In Berlin they left us with a bottle of wine.

  11. No, that isn't written anywere. You'll have to try it to find out. I can tell you again that if the retun's bottom line shows zero for refund or balance due, there is nowhere on that IRS page to enter that. The page where that is entered has only the two boxes, one for balance due and one for refund. It doesn't allow for people that have neither refund or money owed. It is my understanding that the IRS system can't finish authenticating the person as the real taxpayer.
