  1. The Illinois Tax Seminar was originally for farmers, and was adapted by all the "land-grant" schools in every state. For Alabama, this means Auburn U, and I have been going down to Birmingham three years to attend this thing. For Texas, this probably means A&M is sponsoring the seminar. The textbook is pretty good, but doesn't have much about farming any more. If you stand to read IRS material, Pub 225 is pretty good and is strictly for farmers.

  2. You should fill out the support worksheet, and remember that whoever took out that loan is the one that provided that $8500 of support, and the scholarship isn't used in the calc of support.

  3. Same goes for CPA, and even MD. Knowledge does not equal alphabet salad after one's name, and alphabet salad does not equal knowledge.

  4. Scholarships are generally nontaxable if used for qualified expenses. (Only those used for room and board, travel, etc. are taxable.) You don't have to report anything. If the AOC had been claimed in the prior year and reduced the qualified expenses, you would have to recapture some of the credit, but that isn't the case with your client.

  5. I think there is a trend here with outsourcing to India. Back when I bought the Gleim EA study course, Gleim setup discussion groups which was and wasn't helpful. At the time I had at least 20 years tax prep experience and passed everything the first time. My point is there were a number of folks from india and other countries in the group. Some admitted to never preparing a tax return but taking classes to be an EA. I guess because you have EA at the end of your name doesn't mean you know squat. Kinda scares me.

  10. It was checked so if there was a sufficient payment applied to 2024 that exceeded the $7000 of scholarship we should be OK for 2024 and the son has no taxable scholarship to report in 2024, right? Art
