  1. I checked too and found that prior years' opening dates were announced in press releases, and I couldn't find anything yet for this current season. I did find the free file page below that specifically said that e-filing is currently closed and reopening date is anticipated to be mid-January. It looked like NY opened for filing a few days ahead of the Fed. Sorry that isn't very helpful. https://www.tax.ny.gov/pit/ads/efile_addit201.htm
  2. It's ok. The topic is still timely and relevant because of these filings now coming due.

    e-file 1099's

Being an ERO you can e-file the 1099s through the ATX software. For W-2s, you must have a user id from SSA that is obtained by creating an account the BSO (Business Services Online) section on the SSA site. Once you have registered with SSA and have that number, you can create the W-2s in ATX and use the ATX e-file function to convert that into a data file. That data file must be uploaded directly through the SSA site. Alternately, W-2s can be created and filed directly on the SSA site, but this isn't going to have the roll forward features that your tax software does.
  4. The titles and number of dots under each name are assigned by the site's software based solely on the number of posts by that member. Someone who posts only jokes or cartoons with a certain number of posts can be ranked a Supreme Guru.
  5. If, as you've stated over and over, the employer should take no responsibility beyond knowing that the form isn't invalid, then why would the employer be involved in the 100K discussion at all or be memorializing the conversation? By your phrase "and it makes sense" it sounds as if you are suggesting that the employer is to evaluate the entries, not for validity of an acceptable entry on any given line, but to rate it as to their effect on the resulting withholding. Is that what you intend? In the case of the 100K of deductions, why isn't the employer still totally uninvolved, and why isn't the signed and dated W-4 enough?
  6. Abby Normal post 1/9/2020:
  7. Make sure that you are using that latest approved release. It's been a while since I've used ATX, but if you are sure that you have the latest form releases for the 940/941 form itself and for the EF Info form and it still isn't working, try deleting and re-adding back the EF Info form and recalculate the return, then recreate the e-file.
  8. IRS announced today that it will open for individuals on Jan 27, 2020.
  9. Before sharing items from any vendor, please check for copyrights and if an item is accessible to the public without purchasing that vendor's software. If what you are sharing is copyrighted and not accessible outside of the software or without logging in to the vendor's site, including items like checklists, organizers, or practice aids, then those items should not be shared. I can't control if you share it privately, but please do not post it in any topic here for all to see and use.
  10. I'll venture a guess that it must be some setting or limitation outside of this site, in your OS, AV, or browser, because there are no options within this site that would limit the display as you've described.
  11. Not yet, still TBD.
  12. It is a totally different program than others. I would give it about 2 weeks of use and then reevaluate. That should give you enough time to explore features and any limitations that may be specific to your practice, and still be within the time frame to request a refund if it still isn't a good fit.
  13. This is a site that was created by a private individual to whom we are forever grateful. It is not associated with or limited by Wolters Kluwer or CCH in any way. As a private site, its maintenance and its continuation depends on members willing to donate toward its costs. A "Donate" tab is located toward the top of the page with enhancements that include the ability to make either a single or recurring donations, and to view and manage those recurring donations and credit card information in a PCI-compliant environment. Methods of payment included in the checkout process are by credit card or by mailing a check. Some further points about this process: Every donation is associated with the person that made it. No matter what method of payment is used, as long as the checkout process is completed, the site will create a record of that donation and associate it with your account. Recurring donations can be cancelled at any time from the Donate > Manage Donations page. Card info can be updated/removed from the Donate > My Details > Cards page. Fine print: This is all PCI compliant. No credit card information is stored on the admin/owner's server. All transactions are processed by the Stripe payment gateway, and transmitted over an encrypted connection. Admin/owner has implemented similar systems for hospitals around his home state of Maine--all up to industry standards.

  15. @Lion EA I edited to move all of your quotes into quote boxes. I didn't see anything else that was included and didn't delete anything out of your post, but I'm not sure what you are trying to say or why your post was appearing like this. As cbslee said, maybe logging out, clearing your cache, and rebooting your machine would help. Original post appeared like this:
  16. No, the EIN for her Sch C is associated with her social security number and is for her business only. The husband's death would not change any of that. The business EIN is for only the Sch C, not ever used for either of their trusts. What type of trust are you asking about? Grantor trusts that are revocable and created during one's lifetime use the SSN and grantor continues to report the income as if the trust doesn't exist. Nongrantor irrevocable trusts created during one's lifetime have EINs and report separately. Finally, testamentary trusts, also called trust under will, are created at death and would need to apply for an EIN.
  17. Interesting. My view is the same in both Firefox and Chrome. You must save a screenshot and then share that file as an attachment. Once you've uploaded the attachment, within the attachment there will be clickable "+" and a trashcan. Clicking on the "+" within the attachment will insert it into your post where the cursor is positioned at the time. There is a pinned post with more about attachments that is in the "Help" section.
  18. The IRS will begin accepting business returns on Tuesday, January 7, 2020.
  19. Interesting. Are you using a mobile device or desktop? What browser?
  20. It IS visible to everyone, in every post you've made. It's right below your picture. For people that haven't donated, it simply says "Member"
  21. As cbslee said, MeF is shut down. Since your software provider's EFC has the return, I think ithe return will be held and sent to IRS when the MeF system is back in operational status. That is usually around the end of January when they start accepting the 2019 returns this season.

  23. @Eric do the donations have an expiration where the "Donor" designations shown in green revert to "Member"? When I click "Donate" and then "Manage Your Donations" I can see two of mine made after you automated the tracking, and there is one from Nov 2018 that still says "Active". There's another one that is also "Active" that hasn't reached its one year anniversary.
  24. Jack, Pacun is asking about those that have donated to this forum in the past and have the designation of "Donor" that appears under their avatar.

    Windows 10

Besides third party software compatibility, another consideration is the age of your computer and its hardware, drivers, and peripherals, and whether or not all of those will be compatible and fully functional after an upgrade. I don't ever upgrade the OS of an existing, older computer for this reason but will try using older printers or scanners with subsequent newer computers.
