Absolutely. The only way I will know what traffic leaves the computer when I click ATX is with a snifter.
-
I know how the "server" word is used. As a matter of fact, prior to this year, there was no "network" install, so I know. What I am saying that no matter what you have (network or stand alone), there are bits of communication outside the box if the computer is connected to the Internet as soon as click on ATX. Let me get a snifter and I will tell you what kind of communication takes place. I said a snifter because I need a good cognac.

These are my points with this post: 1.- Few users were going to participate because the "server" error is not widespread. 2.- People complain about the issue but don't provide enough information about the issue to find a solution. One last point, if you think that these question are not relevant to use ATX, think again. If they are relevant about using ATX, then they are relevant when issues arise. Have a nice day.

One more question, what protocol does your computer use if you are networked. Keep in mind that IP has two versions so you need to specify which version. Also, what routable protocols are available to your computers? Maybe your computers take too long to checking protocols before they find a match.
-
So, if you have the root of the issue, why do you think you still have that issue intermittently? Besides, people claim this is not a network or cabling issue and they blame a “structural issue” with ATX. How will you explain that the “server issue” appears on a stand alone computer since there is no cable or network involved? The stand alone version of ATX only communicates with the computer itself so nothing leaves the box (according to you). But you bring a good point about the network. Maybe the protocol among the computers and the protocols available and enabled on the computers have something to do with some people getting the error more frequently. Keep in mind that IP has two versions, making them virtually two protocols.

Open the W-2 and print current page????

No one is listening to me. I am just trying to figure out this issue with the help of users. Everybody is smart enough to know that you know and when it is time to follow your advice, they do. I am just trying to see if there is a solution to the issue before I start pointing fingers to a program that is working perfectly for a lot of people. Do you know how many people use ATX? There are many people with that issue and there are many more without that issue. For you to give up and say that it is a structural issue on the program is not a good solution to a problem. In any event, I am not giving advice, I am just sharing my experience and what I think the issue is. I am not suggesting anything except to pay attention to the Internet connection at the moment of opening ATX. I started a new post to see what users with issue have in common with me or among themselves and I hope you participate on that post too.

If you get the error message more than once a week, please share with us: What operating system you are using? What Firewall are you using? What ISP and kind of internet access (for example Verizon DSL or Comcast Cable)? What Antivirus software you are using? Do you feel your computer is slow? Do you feel your internet connection is slow? How old is your computer? How much RAM? Are you or others on your net listening to the radio, watching videos or downloading other stuff while you open ATX? Do you use dropbox or any similar site? Keep in mind that infected computers transmit like crazy and they use a lot of bandwidth but I will not ask that question because none of us have that kind of issues, correct?

Server connectivity has nothing to do with the Internet??? I do believe it does when you first click on ATX. Do you get that message at any other point besides when you first open ATX? The program could be program to operate this way: If there is an internet connection, contact server. If Internet connection is busy from Client, send that nice message to Jack. If our servers are busy attending other requests, send that message to Jack. If there is no Internet connection, AND computer is not busy doing other, then open program and don't send a message to Jack. What do you think? When you have weird errors (this one is because it doesn't happen all the time and not in all computers), you don't rule out any possibility if you want to be successful in finding a workaround or solution. So, please don't rule out the internet connection since you believe there is not a solution to the issue.

I am slow and Rita is the second. I guess I am the third luckiest.

Margaret, I am the second luckiest and I do have powerball and megamillions tickets. I bought 5 numbers of each for 20 weeks which will run until the next year. I do believe this is the problem: I believe that at the moment you click to open ATX, your internet connection is not at its best and ATX demands a certain bandwidth. If the internet connection is shaky at that moment, then ATX gives you that generic message. I also believe that you can control "do not check to update forms" but as an ATX user you cannot prevent the program from checking ATX website for updates or legitimacy of the ATX program.

If the issue were "the way the program is structured" then the issue would be constant and in all computers. Why don't you check the stay resident crapware or programs on your computer? I have seen the issue only when I need to do something on a fly and I turn on my computer and while booting up I open ATX. In reality, I have not had any issues with ATX from the very beginning and I was using XP before and Windows 7 Pro. I have always been admin to the local computer and my computers are clean without any "start and stay resident" programs.

The problem is that only a few people get an error message as the one described. Many of us never see those errors and if we see them, we only click "try again" and it never comes back. Maybe that's the reason why they don't pay attention to a problem that could be a local computer issue.

I wonder if the user has permission to all of the folders involved when you open ATX.

The Taj Mahal Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City employs more than 2000 employees. The owner is asking the Union to sign a contract without any insurance benefit for its employees. They have insurance right now but the owner claims that if they continue to pay for insurance they will close. It seems that they will close in a couple of weeks anyways because the Union and owner don't agree. The owner claims that with ACA, employees can go to the exchange and get insurance at reasonable prices or free. My question is: Why the owner is not concern about the penalties that the IRS will impose?

I think "collecting rent" = putting it in service. I have never seen a landlord allowing people to live in the condo without collecting rent first. So colleting rent is never after putting it in service.
-
Businesses with less than 50 (I think) employees are not affected by ACA so they can do whatever they want regarding insurance.

My friend has used ProSeries for the last 10 years. Each year in January, she rolls over every freaking return. She has about 2K current clients but her system has more than 5K clients. Her employees complain about the slowness of the network and I keep telling her about the extra burden on the network. She says that her "input" employee doesn't know how to roll over returns and that's why she is doing it. If a client didn't come back the following year, there is a 95% changes that he will not come back in the future. So, I don't roll over any until I have them in front of me.

It is easy to blame the new kid on the block and ATX is the new kid on the block each year. I am glad we have figured out that Zone Alarm needs some adjustments to work with ATX without blocking what's needed.

The only time I get that server error with the old ATX (2013) is when I boot up my computer and immediately I try to open ATX. That's because my computer is slow and it is not fully booted up.
-
The download took about 7 minutes and the installation about 5. So within 15 minutes, I was rolling my first return. No issues so far. I predicted a couple of years ago that ATX fixed so many issues the future releases were going to be excellent. I hope I was right. SO FAR SO GOOD. One thing I noticed that they said that my user name was admin, but I already had an account and password. I was entering admin and it never worked. I was asked to change the password and then it said that my account was locked. Then it asked to type the email address associated with the account and it never worked. I went to the site and tried my old user name and password and it let in and I had to change my password. So, if you have a user name and password, do not use admin as they suggest.

I got my installation codes for ATX 2014 but I have not downloaded it yet.

Actually, I fixed the issue. I copied all folders labeled 13***** and it didn't work. Then I copied the common files folder from the old server to the new one and I synchronized the database and everything works like a champ. I already installed the "workstation" on a workstation and everything seems to be working. Thanks.

I am replacing a server for my friend. I have a server running Proseries tax 2013. I also have a brand new server where I will install 2013 and 2014. Does anyone know what folders I need to copy from the old server so I can have the same information for 2013 on both servers? I tried to call Proseries but they are closed. My friend would save about $3K if she changes to ATX, but training is an issue. Just for the record, about 5 years ago I changed the server but I don't remember what I did. I have been installing each year without any issues.

I forgot about the Cap when the 20% kicks in. Thank you for the refresher. I love this forum.
