  1. Maybe your backup is huge and your RAM is little. I have not seen a decrease in performance.... yet.
  2. I have an insurance for these aggressive people. I give them back their paper to go somewhere else and I don't charge them for my time. I also follows JohnH's good practice and thank them for their business. I bet you the guy wanted his papers back and the HR employee wanted to make HR richer and demanded payment. It is not worth it to argue or explained how it works when people don't want to listen.
  3. I would recreate the return and double check her social security number and make sure she doesn't claim herself.
  4. File form 1040 and include global income.
  5. They can use up to $2,500.
  6. Make a copy of the client and work on the copy.
  7. I miss his inputs too.

    Startup cost

Any one knows exactly where I have to change? Will this change only this client or everyone? How about the category for startup cost? It is giving me 15 years and I want to make a deal for 5.
  9. You did it wrong, the amount on the 1099 is the value of the service you received.
  10. I have to depreciate a lot of new equipment. A car Startup expenses Power generator etc. When I enter the car, I get $8,000 of qualified special allowance. I do not want to take that. When I try to move the 50% tab to "none", I get a message that I have to change it on the asset global setting but I don't fine any place to change that. I am amortizing startup expenses but it seems to be using 15 years instead of 5 and I am also getting the 50% qualified special allowance. It is late for me so I am going home and I will continue tomorrow.
  11. 3 years of back taxes should equal 3 years of free hair cuts. Barter for the hair dresser is not a problem, she would add income on Schedule C and expense it as a business operating expense. Since she gave you such a nice treatment, you only charge for preparing schedule C and file 1040 for free, correct? In your case, you have to report the income and don't have any business expenses on your hair.

    Sch A MFJ v MFS

State tax paid is split on the w-2. Donations, you can label them as Husband donation and wife donations. 2106, you file two of them, now for uniforms and union dues, etc, there are two columns. I guess I don't understand the question(s).
  13. We have to refer you to a Tax Preparer, or CPA. Take the documents to him and he will have a better idea. There is always the time when you have to stop doing your own taxes and it seems your time has arrived.
  14. Have you figured out the "starting point" for the basis? It seems that the house was given prior to death so the basis of the father stays. I guess the usage of the house will be same as when the father was alive. Since they didn't have as a rental property nor as an investment, so, I would be inclined to deduct RE taxes on Schedule A in prior and not add them to the basis.
  15. I want to bump up this post. What I do is to open form 1099B and enter the numbers. As you can see you will have no gain and no loss on this transaction. For testing purposes I would enter proceeds as 6K and see the end result and then I would enter the Proceeds as 4k and also see the results.
  16. I have to get you on this one. I made the same mistake but I went back a delete my post before someone quoted me. Daughter didn't have any earned income. You are right, either can claim the little guy.
  17. You are right. BUT grandmother can claim child but not her daughter. File mother as Married filing jointly as surviving spouse claiming grand son and file daughter as single claiming only her own exemption (without the child). If the exact same situation next year, file grand mother as HOH with grand son and daughter as single without child.
  18. Finish the return, then just override the entry on Interest. Just place the cursor on line 8a and then press a number and it will ask you if you want to override it.
  19. It is not clear to me if he had interest income or he paid interest on a mortgage.
  20. I would take that and moving expenses too.
  21. Who do you dislike most, hair dressers or Realtors? I hate, I mean dislike realtors. They always tell people that all the closing cost will be refunded when the taxes are prepared. Why do they give advice on something they are not qualified? Today I heard a realtor on the radio saying that you should buy a house and use it as a home office and then they can open a business and use the house for 3 hours a week and deduct the house and have a loss on their business and that's how uncle Sam gives you money back just by buying a house and opening a business.
  22. No one reads you posts. I am just kidding. I have noticed that too. Sometimes you have 0 views and when you log on back, you have more than 50.
  23. I am glad to report that this year ATX is really good. I mean, this has been the best year software wise. So far I have not called customer service yet and I lot of people will come to ATX next year. That's my prediction and I also predicted that ATX 2013 was going to be robust from the shelf.
  24. TerryD, Yes, I know but the point I want to make sure that we need to document their answers. At the end of form 8867, there is a blank page and I enter all the questions I ask and their answers. If the children are here in the office, I ask the children what school they go to and what grade. At the end, I ask the filer(s) to sign the document and I keep it for my records. Do you believe I am transmitting that piece of information with the efile?
  25. Double. IRS will get two entries for the same amount. You should make a correction with 0.
