  1. Hmmm. I had a similiar situation and the IRS simply sent back the money indicating that the statute was closed. I had advised him that would probably be the result, however, he wanted to make sure that the record was straight. Mike
  2. Thanks for the URL. I just contacted Adobe and found out that v. 4 is not upgradeable. If I want it I have to buy the program outright. Mike
  3. Do you have a URL for Click2Convert? Thanks for the input on Adobe, I may contact the company to see if v.4 is upgradeable. Any other Adobe experience or other programs out there. I wonder if MajorGeek or Download.com has anything...something else to check out. Mike
  4. I am looking for a program that I can send client files to and have them password protected. I was told that Adobe Acrobat can do that. I have an old version, v. 4, but it does not do that. Does v. 8 or the pro version do that, therefore, making it worthwhile to update my program? Mike
  5. Is that to be interpreted that I would not have to reset my software each time I would change? I would only have to set it when I initially add the second monitor and after that I am home free? Sorry, for the question. I am just trying to make sure that I am not assuming anything. Mike
  6. Great page! How hard is it to go back and forth between a dual monitor setup to single. I work out of two offices and would only have the dual setup in one office. Some have indicated that this could be a problem. Mike
  7. Since the consensus is that this is doable, I will have to look more closely into this. It sounds like it would be great. Mike
  8. Is it possible to have a dual monitor setup when you work off a laptop? I have been told by some it is okay and others no. I would like to have a dual monitor setup this year, the laptop and a stand alone. Mike
  9. <<<I do question the household exemption of self employment tax on teenagers working at jobs such as lawn mowing work for neighbors. I would consider that as a Sch-C business subject to SE tax since age has nothing to do with independent contractor status.>>> I had that same reservation when I first read the article. In fact, I have decided to write the magazine about it. I noticed, what I considered an error in a clergy presentation a year or so ago, challenged it, and by jove, they issued a correction in the next issue. I didn't get any credit, but it was corrected. Mike
  10. Simply issued a corrected 1099 only for the one question, marking it corrected. Submit the government copy with a Form 1096. Do not submit any different kinds of 1099s other than the type corrected with this 1096. Do not resubmit the correct 1099s. Since the 1099s are printed 3up you may have two blanks when you submit the forms but that is okay. See the general instructions for Form 1099s for further informtion. I hope this helps. Mike
  11. <<<I said in California, not federal. And it is required, not "allowed." And the effective date was January 1, 2007. >>> Ah, the infamous "registered domestic partners." This ought to be fun in CA, two separate returns (single) for federal purposes. and then a MFJ or MFS return(s) for state purposes. Hmmm. Could cause a higher fee to be charged.
  12. <<<and now we have this thing about gays who aren't allowed to get married (although many did anyway) and are now stuck with filing MFJ anyway. >>> Since when, especially from a federal perspective, are gays who are "married" allowed to file MFJ?
  13. I would because Section III of the AR4 is the supporting information for line 56 with is only a memo entry for income not subject to AR income tax. I have had an AR client for a couple years, however, when I get stuck I check my NATP listing and contact an AR NATP member. If you are a member of any professional organization, you may want to look and see if they have this kind of service.
  14. <<<Call it what you want but JH should not have to pay the "10% penalty for early withdrawal" as that was owed by the taxpayer had JH not made a mistake. If the IRS had not caught it should the taxpayer have paid it to JH since the taxpayer really owed it? Of course it would be good advertising for JH to pay it. >>> In spite of others verbal gymnastics, OldJack is right. Unfortunately, a client missed a RMD, I paid the penalty and they were clients until the day they died and they did not hesitate to recommend me to others.
  15. Hmmm. I've always called it an excise tax. Boy, I guess I was off base.
  16. The proration due to non AR income takes place on line 44 of AR 1000NR.
  17. Man...why do I never have any of the good ideas?
  18. They probably used a car with an extension...but October 15 is approaching and their extension will expire.
  19. Sounds like you may need to replace your VGA card. Call a tech shop in the area and describe the problem to them. If it sounds like that is it, you can have it in and out of the shop in the same day. Take it in some Thursday pm, take Friday off and pick it up Monday morning. Mike
  20. With the correct information presented, it looks like you should contact the issuer of the 1099R. You have received all the money (8 reissued checks and 3 that you collected) and the 1099R does not match those amounts. However, since you indicated there will be no tax liability, it is sort of a moot point, other than the return is not accurate per you records.
  21. I might make a suggestion here....make sure your backup is done or kept offsite. If you have a fire/earthquake/flood/etc. and you backup is located at your site and it is destroyed or severely damaged, there goes your data.
  22. I know this will come across as argumentative, but why not say, "My client does/does not know who took the check." "The check was taken from the mailbox," or "This person was caring for the house and took the check when they brought the mail in." It is fairly obvious that you don't want to release some information (I hope you/your client was more forthcoming with the police), and you well know, that, with a lack of information comes a limitation on the response and the veracity of the answer is also in question. Good luck on recovery of any money, presecution of the thief and handling this issue from a tax perspective.
  23. I have been saying that for years. Good for you. Mike
  24. Here is a questions I submitted to the IRS about a 3rd party backup system (such as Mozy) and their answer. Question: If you use an online backup system to protect against data loss is the a URL that is required to be used. This URL does not provide any data collection from clients nor does it assist in the preparation or transmission of tax returns. Answer (canned at that); Dear Michael Thank you for sending me your question regarding the new rule issued by IRS on Monday, July 30, 2007. The purpose of this rule is to develop a comprehensive list of valid websites used by EROs to prepare and e-file federal returns in order to guard taxpayers against phishing and pharming sites that may result identity theft. This rule applies to All Authorized IRS e-file Providers that obtain taxpayer information via the Internet directly or through third parties in order to e-file federal returns. Taxpayer data is defined as any information that is obtained or used in the preparation of a tax return (e.g., Social security numbers, names, and addresses, dates of birth, income statements, and notes taken in a meeting). The following EROs are not affected by this rule: a.) EROs that do not have an internet website that obtains taxpayer information via the internet for the purpose of e-filing returns, b.) EROs that do not have an internet website that obtains taxpayer information from a third party (not from the taxpayer directly) for the purpose of e-filing returns c.) EROs that only receive taxpayer data via e-mail d.) EROs that prepare returns and transmit their returns through third party transmitters e.) EROs that prepare returns and use their Providers website to e-file their returns (This site will be registered by the Provider) Based on the information you provided, you do not have a website that gathers taxpayer data for the purpose of e-filing tax returns and appear to only transmit your returns through a third party provider, it does not appear as if this rule applies to you and you are not required to send us any further information or data. We hope that this answers your question. For further information and the answers to additional questions about this rule please check the Frequently Asked Questions located on the IRS website or, if you need further clarification related to your original question, please re-submit your question to this address. Please be as specific as possible to assist us in answering your question. ===================================================== While this is a canned response, I am going to keep it in my files, just in case.
