  1. I took the liberty and emailed both Ryan Toone TaxWorks Technical manager as well as Doug Hughes President TRX to voice our collective dissatisfaction and didappointment with the 2011 software, (see below). To date I have not received any response. TRX Doug Hughes President Today is Monday April 2, 2012 and I just tried to call support @ 6: PM eastern time which I believe would make it 5: PM central time and your offices are closed? This is the peak period of the tax season as any seasoned professional will tell you and your closed? In addition, I suggest that you review the ATX Community Board http://www.atxcommunity.com/index.php?act=idx and follow the litany of posts at the TRX button for some of the comments about TRX this year. You guys are missing the boat if you expect to retain your present clients in future years with this type of behavior. I realize that you now have developed your home grown software which I in fact reviewed earlier this year. It appears to contain many bells and whistles; however I was not enamored with some of its shortcomings, i.e. no 1041, 706, 5500 forms, etc. In addition the customer support when I inquired with some questions was not very responsive. I am certain that you will improve your product significantly in the in the near future. Please take this correspondence as constructive criticism as I have been a fan of TRX in the past. Thanks for your indulgence. Mike Dubin CPA TaxWorks Ryan Toone Technical Manager April 21, 2012 I am speaking for many of the TaxWorks users that purchased your software through TRX and am sorry to report that this was not a good year. Tech support was horrible, many glitches with the software, many questions unanswered and/or answered incorrectly, or late. In any event the majority of the TRX group will repurchase your 2012 software based solely on price. You did previously state to me that the software is undergoing dramatic revisions and the 2012 product will be awesome? Can you elaborate on this? I will be attending the NY Accounting and Technology Show in NYC next month and will discuss with your representatives at the show. Would you be good enough to post on the ATX Community Board, http://www.atxcommunity.com/index.php?act=idx for all to read. I believe that the group of users are substantial and that if and when TRX no longer has TaxWorks as an offering the group may wish to negotiate directly with you to continue using your software? Thanks for your participation. Mike Dubin CPA
  2. I agree with all that although the tech support was not as good as prior years the price trumps all. I will be attending the NY Accounting & Technology Show on May 2 in NYC at which Red Gear has a booth. I spoke to them at length last year and they assured me that they were entirely revamping the software for 2012. That could be a good thing, however it could also cause problems and issues if not teasted properly? I will report on any feedback that I get from them. My best to all Mike Dubin CPA
  3. I just called TRX and they are indeed open for business today April 2, 2012. The phone number I dialed is 1-855-880-1040! Mike Dubin CPA
  4. I don’t want to appear paranoid, however I am beginning to believe that TRX is deliberately sabotaging Red Gear now that they have their home grown product available? In addition I have personally reached out to Ryan Toone for support and since his last appearance he has not been very responsive. This leads me to believe that I may be looking for an alternate software package for next year. If any of you have been using TRX home grown products would you be good enough to give us your feedback as that may just be my alternative? I will continue to reach out to Ryan and wish all a happy and prosperous tax season. Mike Dubin CPA
  5. Jack from Ohio I find it fascinating that you feel compelled to disagree with my position. The more interesting fact is if you are so smart and accomplished why don't you sit for the CPA exams? I am willing to bet my house that you wouldn't pass! When I prepared for the CPA exams 35 years ago I was prepared and most likely would have aced the EA exam had it been available at that time. For the record I have never thought of sitting for the EA exam as I have already arrived! Mike Dubin CPA
  6. Are you guys seriously comparing the level of education, mandatory training, and testing criteria that a CPA must endure to an EA? You can call me Cleaning Pressing & Alterations or Can't Prove Anything, but don't call me an EA! When push comes to shove you guys in general are out of your league. Mike Dubin CPA
  7. I received an email from Ryan who was out of town recently and he indicated that he would be visiting this board within the next 24 to 48 hours. Mike Dubin CPA
  8. I just emailed Ryan for his assistance. You should bear in mind that he is not obligated to monitor this board and/or provide any support as we have not purchased the software from Red Gear directly! That being said we need to be a bit more tolerant and thankful that he will assist us in time. I am certain that he will oblige! Mike Dubin CPA
  9. This post belongs in the TRX Tax Wowks Pending Issues for Ryan post as he will preview this location from time to time. Good luck Mike Dubin CPA

  13. This is the new location for all of us to post our issues to for Ryan to easily get to all at once. Again please use your professional jugdement in determining if your post is something that belongs here. Mike Dubin CPA
  14. I would personally like to thank Ryan Toone for his timely assistance to all of our issues. This is how an effective software company performs! I would like to suggest to Ryan that if possible he should continue to monitor our issues on a regular basis. I will start a new post named TRX TaxWorks Pending Issues for Ryan for all to post to in the future. This should make it easier for Ryan to see all of the issues in one specific location? In addition lets not forget Eric the host of this board and all that he does for us, please continue your contributions! Mike Dubin CPA
  15. This is a good question for Ryan! Mike Dubin CPA
  16. Kea, The forms and features are dependent on which package that you contracted to purchase? I originally purchased the Premium Package which does provide all of the business returns as well as e filing, however it does not provide for forms W-2, 1099, etc. I was elated that they were going to provide me with their after the fact payroll software but after reviewing it I found it left alot to be desired, see my earlier posts. I also noticed that their homegrown Premium package, Tax Exact does not provide forms 1041, 706, 709, 990 and 5500. I brought this to their attention and they indicated that they would be providing all of these additional forms for 2012. I was solicited by Doug Hughes Pres of TRX to participate in selecting and developing a fixed asset package for Tax Exact. I responded to Doug that I would be happy to participate after the tax season which he agreed to. This leads me to believe that they may be nearing the end of their contract with Red Gear and as such are trying to perfect Tax Exact? I will keep you posted. Mike Dubin CPA
  17. Ryan emailed me today indicating that he would be visiting the board some time later today to attempt to resolve any open issues. Therefore, I would suggest to all to post any and all outstanding issues that you may be having using your professional jugdement to focus on the salient ones. Hopefully this will resolve most of our current issues? Mike Dubin CPA
  18. This is a link to all of his returns for 2010. I wonder how much he was charged for these to be prepared? It is not disclosed on the returns! http://www.boston.com/news/politics/2012/president/candidates/romney/romney_tax_return_1040_2011/ Mike Dubin CPA
  19. I personally to date have not encountered any issues. That being said, I took the liberty to contact Ryan Toone from Red Gear who was good enough to assist us last year. As some of you may recall he fixed and/or explained pretty much every issue? I will let you know when I hear from him or you will simple see his posts on this board. Good luck to all. Mike Dubin CPA
  20. I think we should all review Newt Gingrich's tax return to determine a fair and equitable fee for our services. The link is as follows: http://www.newt.org/sites/newt.org/files/GingrichIncomeTaxReturn.pdf For those of you who are do not feel compelled to peek, the fees charged for tax preparation by a Maryland CPA Firm, per Schedule A of the return were $8,505. That's what I'm talkin about! Mike Dubin CPA
  21. Which telephone number are you calling. They changed their number recently to 1-855-880-1040! I have called them twice since my last post and all was okay. Mike Dubin CPA
  22. I corresponded with Doug the pres of TRX as follows. Mike, We had bad weather and it knocked our phone sytem out from the pole not internal but the phone company fixed it now. Doug First I wish to inform you of the fact that I was not provided any research software for 2011. You may recall that one of my biggest issues with ATX was the fact that they arbitrarily removed software from the program and substituted it with an additional cost solution. I trust this won't be the case with TRX? Upon my inquiry, I was offered the ATFP software as a replacement. I was provided with the codes which do not work, very frustrating. I attempted to contact you both via telephone and chat online. Your phones are not responsive and I was disconnected 3 different times from chats! Who's brilliant idea was it to change telephone systems during the tax season? I hope that these incidents early in the tax season do not portend the future of TRX? Thanks Mike Dubin CPA You can see my post on the ATFP software under Free ATFP software for further information. I assume that it was only temporary as I was on the phone with them today and all was okay. Mike Dubin CPA
  23. Had I known the outcome, I never would have posted this topic. I downloaded Tax Exact and was finally able to connect to ATFP which comes with No insrtuctions and/or training No state tax support, only federal And finally if you can figure out how to find form 1099 and albeit efile, you deserve a Pulitzer Prize. In this case you only get what you pay for! Mike Dubin CPA
  24. I called TRX today to inquire as to the status of the research software and was advised that they discontinued it after 2010. I reminded them of the actions of ATX and how they would arbitrarily remove software without notification and when confronted they would have a special cost savings for you to purchase the same software? They apologized and offered me their After The Fact Payroll Software for free which I downloaded and looked at briefly. I will spend some time using it later in the week and report to all of findings. For any of you that purchased the TRX Premium Membership and wish to avail themselves of this software I would call them and let them know your feelings. Good luck Mike Dubin CPA
  25. Interestingly, I never received my software. I called today and they provided me with a link to download. Pretty straightforward and all of my 2010 files have been rolled over to 2011 accurately. Anyone else encounter these issues? Thanks and happy holidays to all. Mike Dubin CPA
