  1. My understanding is a bit different. The tax is billed and any refunds will be used to offset the tax owed. I think it was a decision at the Treasury Department level, to not actively pursue collection.
  2. "To help mitigate the risk of infection, Sophos recommended putting any machines using RDP behind a VPN, and to employ two factor authentication (2FA) to replace all admin password" Interesting since Microsoft has announced that it is moving away from using passwords. I suspect we will all be moving away from passwords to 2 factor authentication or even more complicated sign on requirements.
  3. Copied from one of the online posters to the previous link: "One of my customers is one of CCH’s customers and he was told by their support they got hit with Mega Cortex Ransomware yesterday"
  4. It wouldn't surprise me. ATX has a long history of cutting corners including using a shareware database when they rewrote the program which caused the 2012 debacle !
  5. Just wondering, what browser and search engine do you use ?
  6. Three new tax bills have been voted out of the House Ways and Means Committee with broad bipartisan support with zero "no" votes: https://www.taxprotoday.com/opinion/2019-federal-tax-legislation-starting-to-take-shape?feed=00000158-3f5d-dcbd-abf8-ff7f12270000 I found the most interesting provisions to be: 1. Repeal of maximum age for IRA Contributions ! 2. Change age to begin RMDs from 70 1/2 to 72 ! 3. Increase Failure To File Penalties ! 4. Tighten and Restrict Distribution Rules for Beneficiaries of Qualified Retirement Plans and IRAs ! Also significant is no movement on any of the Tax Extenders or any of the TCJA Technical Corrections !

  7. Interesting, my TCC, that I received early this year is 5 digits( 3 numbers, a letter, followed by 1 number). I don't have a PIN, I applied by fax before Christmas and received a letter in January.
  8. Your potential problem with this scenario is "when was the investment deemed to be unrecoverable"?
  9. It may be something as simple as one of the employees got married and their last name was changed in your client's payroll system but not in the SS system.
  10. Here is a link to an article in CPA Practice Advisor about this issue: https://www.cpapracticeadvisor.com/payroll/article/12441373/employers-ssn-nomatch-letters-are-back

    ATX Renewal

The last 2 or 3 years with ATX, when I had problems with the efiling of Oregon Business returns due to software glitches, I would get a response in 2 or 3 days and a fix in a week. What would upset me the most was, they would never acknowledge that a problem even existed and they would never let me know when it was fixed. All of a sudden after a week or so of waiting the problem would magically go away and I could efile.
  12. I am always puzzled by posts like this, because I currently have my tax program, my payroll program, my accounting program and this website all open on my Win 7 Pro 64 bit I 3 CPU with 8 Gig of Ram and a 500 Gig SSD and everything is running fine ?

    NT EMAIL

I have received several phone calls that spoofed my own phone number.
  14. I also checked it out, but as small business users, we do not qualify and will not be offered "extended paid support" Microsoft will only be offering "extended paid support" to corporate accounts etc. There are tech articles online which tell you how to "spoof" MS and move up a classification so that you can buy "extended paid support'!

    ATX Renewal

Yup, this kind of stuff was why after 20 years with ATX, I left for Drake before last ta season. Yes, Drake does do the calculation and the cost to renew Drake is the same as last year and the year before that..
  16. I am still running a Win 7 Pro 64 bit I 3 CPU with 8 Gig of Ram and a 500 Gig Hard Drive which runs just fine. It also helps that my system is not loaded down with a bunch of other resource hungry programs. I will say that replacing the regular Hard Drive with a SSD Drive several years ago made a significant difference.
  17. Then either the IRS has made a mistake or there is something about this situation that you don't know.
  18. A tax levy on wages is a continuing levy until such time as the entire tax debt is paid in full, assuming that the levy was in place before the 10 year statue expired.
  19. Judy, could you take down my post. The IRS link for Pub 5187 takes you to the 2018 version, which talks about the SRP requirements, which no longer is in effect as of January 1st 2019.
  20. New instructions and publications on IRS.gov Instructions: Inst 2210, Instructions for Form 2210, Underpayment of Estimated Tax by Individuals, Estates and Trusts Publications: Pub 505, Tax Withholding and Estimated Tax Pub 5303, Paycheck Checkup Pub 5303 (SP), Paycheck Checkup (Spanish Version)
  21. An I 2 core processor is a low end machine. Actually I didn't know they still sold computers with chips that old. Today an I 3 processor is considered a basic machine. You should probably get a computer with a I 5 CPU.
  22. If the IRS levies (seizes) your wages, part of your wages will be sent to the IRS each pay period until: You make other arrangements to pay your overdue taxes, The amount of overdue taxes you owe is paid, or The levy is released There is no time limit on levies. You must be thinking of something else. As far getting the levy released, it just depends on facts and circumstances and following IRS procedures.
  23. After 20 years with ATX, I switched to Drake prior to last tax season. I am glad I switched although it probably still takes me longer to prepare a return on Drake than it did on ATX. My state of Oregon was a ways down ATX's priority list. It was usually around the 20th of February or later, before I could efile any Oregon Business Returns. Even then there was usually problems related to the actual efiling which usually took another week to be fixed. I notice that you are from RI. If the efilling of state business returns during the first 3 weeks of February is a priority for you, you need to find out when the efiling of those returns became available the last 2 or 3 years. Based on my experience, you can not trust which ATX will tell you about this issue. You will need to find another ATX user from your state in order to get the real dates. The final straw for me was that, I didn't feel that I could trust what ATX was telling me any more !
  24. My understanding is that under the TCJA, the recharacterization of ROTH contributions is no longer allowed .
  25. Copied from the BNA Blog: Here is a roundup of payroll issues covered in the past week: Federal A House bill (H.R. 2213) was introduced April 10 that would permanently extend the work opportunity tax credit. The credit, which ranges from $1,200 to $9,600 per employee, seeks to help veterans, the long-term unemployed, felons, the disabled, and other disadvantaged groups. A congressional plan for federal paid family leave would use health savings accounts to fund the program. Employers would make pre-tax contributions to the accounts under the plan, which was introduced April 9 by Rep. Andrew Biggs (R.-Ariz.). Reports of business identity theft were up about 10 percent in 2018 compared, with 2017, the IRS said April 8. Compared with individual identity theft, which had an 18 percent decrease in reports over the same period, business identity theft may take a variety of forms, such as stealing the employer’s identification number or W-2 information, as well as making fraudulent wire transfers, the IRS said. Treasury Department and IRS officials March 28 presented payroll-industry representatives with an early draft of the 2020 Form W-4 that would implement changes required by the tax code overhaul (Pub. L. 115-97). State Nebraska employers may make unemployment tax payments on an annual basis, instead of quarterly, if they have a positive account balance and no late payments on Oct. 31 of a given year, under an amendment to a state regulation effective April 10. New Jersey’s wage base for employee contributions the state temporary disability and family leave programs is to increase by nearly four times in 2020, to $131,000 from $34,400, a spokesman for the state Department of Labor and Workforce Development said April 9. New Mexico added an income tax bracket of 5.9 percent for high earners, to take effect in 2021, in a tax-changes bill (H.B. 6) signed April 4 by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D)
