  1. Perhaps an unknown power has placed a hex on this return.
  2. I believe that the MeF system shuts down every Sunday morning from 1 AM to 7 AM for maintenance.
  3. I haven't done any returns with EIC for at least 3 years. Do they still have a cap limitation on total investment income?
  4. "As of Jan. 28, the tally of outstanding individual and business returns requiring what the IRS calls “manual processing” — an operation where an employee must take at least one action rather than relying on an automated system to move the case — came to 23.7 million, the taxpayer advocate data shows. The number includes 9.7 million paper returns awaiting processing; 4.1 million that were suspended because of errors with stimulus payments, pandemic relief or other issues; 4.1 million amended returns; and 5.8 million pieces of correspondence awaiting action between the agency and taxpayers to resolve issues before the returns are completed." https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/02/11/irs-returns-backlog/ This is really bad! It's like a slow moving trainwreck headed downhill!
  5. It means that your client's tax return requires manual intervention to resolve some processing issue or problem. As of late last month there were still 6 Million unprocessed 1040 tax returns . All you can do is wait.
  6. I can't recall that smoothing income and expenses is a tax principle. It certainly wasn't part of my CPA Exam or my Enrolled Agent Exam. However, it's certainly become part of what CFOs of publicly traded corporations do at the end of every month, quarter and year.

  8. Katherine, since you haven't said what kind of entity is the business, it's a bit unclear?
  9. Yeah, I found it interesting that they double counted by counting the same notices twice once in English and once in Spanish.
  10. To be precise they suspended a few automated notices. Most of them will continue to be sent out.
  11. Report both 1099Cs then back out one of them with the explanation, " Reported on Form xxxx Ein xx- xxxxxxx. Don't spend any more time wrestling with the bank, you will just get dirty.
  12. Yeah, my youngest daughter and her husband are divorcing. They just slowly drifted apart and stopped talking to each other. Unfortunately, my two grand kids age 2 & 4 have no idea about what's going on.
  13. Ask to see her Military I D, then you will know.
  14. Suspended Notices - CP80, CP501, CP502, CP503, 2802C

Uodated FAQs for EIP3 were released a few days ago
  16. "We are suspending automated collection notices normally issued when a taxpayer owes additional tax or has no record of filing a tax return,” said Rettig. “Note that many other IRS notices are statutorily required to be issued within a certain time frame to be legally valid. In some situations, it might seem that we should modify a portion of a system to provide taxpayer relief. Unfortunately, because we have not had the resources to invest in more modern technology that allows us to contain the effects of one change on the broader technological ecosystem, it must be acknowledged that we may not be able to do so without jeopardizing the overall operating system." "The agency has also implemented mandatory overtime for the first time in certain functions, Rettig noted."
  17. So is this an ngo militia?
  18. The reinvestment in a new home strategy died with The Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997.

    ID.me is out

What is so stupid is that the GSA manages a high quality site called Login.gov which is used by many other federal agencies. However the IRS decided that they needed their own!
  20. I don't do many returns that require me to answer these due diligence questions. However they are one of the most annoying things I do every year.
  21. After lots of pressure from many different sources: WASHINGTON — The IRS said Monday it will suspend the use of facial recognition technology to authenticate people who create online accounts after the practice was criticized by privacy advocates and lawmakers. The agency said it would no longer use a third-party service, called ID.me, for facial recognition. Critics of the software said the database could become a target for cyberthreats. They also expressed concern about how the information could be used by other government agencies, among other concerns.
  22. It's not a new problem, it's one of the reasons I decided to leave ATX 4 years ago.
  23. "The Internal Revenue Service is temporarily re-assigning 1,200 employees to the frontlines of a challenging 2022 tax season to deal with a daunting backlog of last year’s paper returns and mail from taxpayers. People who have worked as customer-service representatives, tax examiners and clerks in the IRS’s “accounts management” operations during the last two fiscal years are some of the existing staffers that the tax collection agency is gathering for its “Inventory Surge Team,” IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig explained in a message to staffers on Wednesday evening. “This is an all-hands-on-deck situation to help people as quickly as possible, and reduce the stress on employees who have been and continue to face unprecedented levels of inventory to be worked,” Rettig’s message said. The IRS is looking at various ways to help taxpayers and the temporary reassignment of 1,200 employees is one way to do it, a spokesman said. The employees will remain in their re-assigned roles through September, he said."
