  1. Just did a MA nonresident for my RI client who worked part time in MA. Couldn't get the interest, dividends and capital gains to not show as MA income, so I just used a blank line on B & D to type nonresident and backed them both out. I know that can't be right but I couldn't spend anymore time on it. Also got a warning about possibly having to adjust the Social Security and Medicare deductions because total income exceeds MA wages, but I decided to just let MA adjust that if they like. Told the client that MA might adjust her refund. Any insights from you MA preparers would be appreciated. Laugh if you must.
  2. If they're getting paid, they could also have a gain on the sale.
  3. If the home was in the estate, one 1099-S should have been issued to the estate. Now, if the estate reports the sale, the income will be double reported to the bene's.
  4. Damn. ATX made me eat my words. Had the forms ready the same day for at least some of the extenders.
  5. Clearing print jobs is easy. The cache/queue, not so much: https://www.windowscentral.com/how-remove-stuck-print-job-windows-10 https://www.online-tech-tips.com/computer-tips/how-to-forcefully-clear-all-jobs-from-a-print-queue/ But if you create a batch file to do it, and put a shortcut on your desktop to the batch file, you'd be set.
  6. If they had just put it on the 1098 to begin with, we would have waited to prepare the return, and they would not have had to print and mail 1098s twice. It was Pennymac Loan Services. This is not my most favorite tax season.
  7. He should be getting guaranteed payments and health insurance counts as guaranteed payments. I have a partnership with a SIMPLE and we take it as a 1040 adjustment.
  8. 90,804.00 + 12,500.00 - 5,482.00 + 83,786.00 T
  9. Other than Social Security, they have less than 4,050 income each?
  10. We don't import. Just enter totals. Never attach anything. Not a peep from the IRS. Rarely enter directly on Sch D unless clients only have codes A & D with no wash sales. Prefer to have it all on 8949 Detail where I can see totals and tie to 1099B.
  11. Oh, I had forgotten about this: https://www.oo-software.com/en/shutup10
  12. I'm fairly temperature tolerant, I just don't like being cold for an extended period of time.
  13. Also, when you install a new printer, ignore the warnings to not connect the data cable. Printer companies want all this crap software running on your computer. Just connect it and when windows detects it, it will install a driver for you, or you can browse the CD that came with the printer and find the driver file there. Although you need to be a bit tech saavy to know which folder on the CD to use. But the windows driver will normally be fine, and most likely come from the printer manufacturer anyway.
  14. Windows 10 updates is a problem that you can find volumes about on the web. It's one of the main reasons I refuse to upgrade. So I haven't needed to inform myself about that yet, sorry.
  15. Windows only lets you see a few programs that autorun when windows starts. In task manager, there is a startup tab where you can disable/enable these programs from autostarting. Autoruns is a Microsoft sanctioned program that lets you see everything that starts automatically. You can search for things like Adobe or Intuit to turn off all the crap you don't need running constantly. Your computer will start faster and have fewer conflicts. If you don't what it is, you should probably leave it alone or search the web for it to help you decide if you need it running or not. There is a windows startup folder at: C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup which is useful for pasting shortcuts into for programs you want to run at startup, that don't have a setting for that. Rabbit hole warning: I run a very old program that still works on Win8.1 called StartupMonitor, that's only available on the Wayback Machine and a few other download sites. It runs automatically at startup and prompts you to allow or disallow anything a program (I'm looking at you Intuit.) tries to make run automatically without asking you (How rude!).
  16. Yeah, I don't like that kind of crapware running on my computers. I always firing up Autoruns to see what I can disable.
  17. I may have to reshuffle which print packets I use for what to take advantage of this. But not this tax season!
  18. Sorry, I did word that a bit confusingly. It's in Preferences, Print. Check 'Mask sensitive info on Client Copy'. Beats me why they didn't say 'mask Social Security numbers'.
  19. When using the Client print packet, if you check the preference to suppress, yes. Also, it's an option in business returns to suppress the SSN on the federal K1... but most states don't allow this yet.
  20. Quite possibly: Unfortunately, some persons deed away their homes without reserving a life estate. Arguably, the federal estate tax inclusion ends up being lost by such a maneuver, but the literal language of Section 2036 quoted above can salvage the step-up in basis: note that the word “retained” is used. The Internal Revenue Service has successfully argued in the past that a right can be retained without having been reserved, and that the continued occupancy of the home after the transfer of title, without paying fair market rent, is evidence of an implicit agreement, understanding or assumption of the parties of the transaction. (See Estate of Linderme v. Commissioner, 52 T.C. 305 (1969).)
  21. Not for me. I love 95 degree days!
  22. Did they do a title with a reserved life estate or just stupidly gift the house? If the latter, they're screwed and will pay taxes. This is why you consult a pro every time the amount of any transaction is over a couple thousand dollars. The small fee you pay can save you thousands of dollars in taxes.
  23. I wish ATX would change two things: Allow us to suppress ID#s on every print packet. Put a checkbox in the print dialog so we can turn it on or off as printing. I've gotten new clients where all the ID#s were suppressed on tax documents and returns, so I had to ask what the ID#s were.
