  1. As long as sales tax plus RE/PP taxes are more than 10k, you don't have a taxable state income tax refund next year. Also, MD backs out state income tax from itemized deductions, but not state sales tax, so it saves MD taxes too. And MD couples who have around 20k in itemized will likely be better off itemizing and paying more in federal taxes, because they'd save more in MD taxes than they pay in additional federal taxes, because the MD standard deduction is so low, and you can't itemize state unless you itemize federal. Would be interested to learn how this shakes out in other states.
  2. My thoughts exactly. Was surprised how clearly he still sang. Of course, we know all they lyrics anyway. So did the young'ens in the audience.
  3. Have you noticed they haven't used the word 'simplification' for awhile now?
  4. This article says the new 20% deduction applies to Sch E as well. https://www.forbes.com/sites/anthonynitti/2017/12/26/tax-geek-tuesday-making-sense-of-the-new-20-qualified-business-income-deduction/#369de47744fd
  5. Many of us have been asking them for years to save money and stop mailing out software CDs and other useless items.
  6. They are still working on extenders: https://www.wsj.com/livecoverage/tax-bill-2017/card/1513867153

  8. I saw the Black Sabbath farewell tour this summer with my son. It was the first band we ever bonded over, many years ago.
  9. It worked fine for me, but I changed my password a few weeks ago.
  10. Enjoy all your holidays and the best of health, happiness and prosperity in the coming year!
  11. U stands for urban, which probably has lower prices than the boonies. Paging /user/RitaB.
  12. If you have AnswerConnect, their analysis is here. And, you're welcome for the KPMG source!
  13. Emphasis mine. So, since some of us will be so poor we can't even buy the goods, that inflation doesn't count. Happy new year? I have a different vision of 'chained' in my head than they probably intended.
  14. Do you have a link to it? I downloaded one from Wolters Kluwer. It could be identical... or not. https://www.cchgroup.com/media/wk/taa/pdfs/news-and-insights/federal-tax-legislation/house-gop-tax-cuts-job-act.pdf
  15. PDF995Suite, Nuance PDF Standard and I'm sure many others will add passwords to PDF files. https://www.google.com/search?q=password+protect+pdf&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-b-1-ab
  16. I don't see how you could delete or even edit that line in this year's or last year's software.
  17. They were afraid (and rightfully so) that repealing the mandate would throw the insurance markets into turmoil, so they are giving everyone a year to plan for it.
  18. Do they really consider Sch Cs a pass-thru entity?
  19. I recently subscribed to KPMG's Tax News Flash. It's way more than I need but I just skip to the relevant articles. Plus it's free. Long time reader of Dave & Mary Mellem's emails. I think you can subscribe by just emailing Mary at [email protected]. Forbes has some good tax writers like Tony Nitti.
  20. If my W2s Boxes 1, 3 and 5 didn't agree with my 941s, I'd get new software.
  21. If your W2s don't tie to your 941s, the IRS will ask why. I'd rather avoid unnecessary letters. Besides, when we add health insurance and personal use of vehicles in QB, the 941 & 940 come out correctly and do tie to the W2s.
  22. Act now to get your new e-Services account created by calling the e-Help Desk. IRS has additional personnel available to help you register and authenticate your identity. e-Services will be moving behind the two-factor Secure Access process before the end of the year. At that time, all e-Services users without a Secure Access account will then be required to re-register using Secure Access authentication. We are offering this phone option in advance of the Secure Access launch to help you avoid any delays that might affect your work. If you already have created an account using the Secure Access process via Get Transcript Online, for example, there is no further action you need to take. To get started call, the e-Help desk at 1-888-841-4648 (select your language, then prompt 1 and remain on the line until a CSR picks up), 7:30 a.m. Eastern to 7 p.m. Eastern.
  23. Yeah they better advise everyone to fill out a new W4 with fewer allowances, or a lot of folks are going to be facing a huge balance due when they file their 2018 tax returns.
  24. That's even more work. No thanks. I only export once a month or so. Exports are my last resort. I'd rather restore the actual data from my backups, or restore my backups from my ATX's backups.
  25. If you're in a state with an income tax that requires you to itemize for federal if you want to itemize for state, and also has a low state standard deduction (I'm looking at you Maryland!), you may find yourself taking itemized deductions on federal even though they're lower than the standard deduction because you can save more in state taxes than it costs you in federal taxes. I've been doing a lot of that for years. I also play with taking a lower sales tax amount instead of income tax itemized deduction in various situations. Sometimes it results in a higher tax but the state income tax refund is not taxable next year and saves taxes overall taking the 2 years together. Did someone say 'tax simplification'?
