  1. Please help. I need other opinions. I don't have a clear head on this since it involves family - and they do not like what I have told them about capital gains. Parents purchased home in 1974 - father died and mother "sold" the home to three children in the late 90's for "less than $100". She did not retain life estate. Nothing else was done. Home being sold now for FMV. What would you consider the cost basis for determining capital gains? Thanks Wendy

    ATX/TRX

I thought I remembered that we were told that TRX would support it - and that since they had tax professionals on board it would be better. This young man from CCH was quite explicit that if I should have questions I should NOT call the TRX number. And although he had my info including my efin# he did not seem to know how long I had been a prior ATX customer either. The only other thing he brought up was that if I did offer bank products that I would have to fill out a form with TRX. I don't offer them, so I promptly forgot that part of the conversation. When he started the conversation he said that he was calling to confirm that they would support the product purchased through TRX - and I said "Why - was there a question that you would?" Wendy

    ATX/TRX

Just received a call from CCH Small Firms to confirm that I purchased ATX MAX from TRX prior to May 31 and that that was what I would receive. They confirmed address/phone etc and said the customer #, EFIN # and access to My ATX would remain the same. Also said if there were questions or problems to contact ATX phone NOT TRX (hmmmmm). Said that the program would arrive sometime in November. Interesting.
  4. I've been asked to do new 1120S, which was set up by the owner and they did all the bookkeeping. Don't you just hate those? Now I'm getting myself confused. Two shareholders contributed about 3000 each. NO stock issued - 1000 shs allowed Took salaries - no problem there Net profit about 1800 Then they issued themselves checks classed as "withdrawals" for another 19000 Are they truly shareholders with no stock? Distributions of profit in excess of basis is capital gains, but in excess of PROFITS? Shareholder loan? Thanks Wendy
  5. They've been around for quite a while - maybe they've moved recently. I've used them in the past since, like you, I was looking for the least expensive way of meeting the requirements. Their selection is limited to a few selections each year, and the material is relatively basic, but accurate. And it can give you fine points of a subject you don't deal with all the time. They are very easy to deal with and return the exams quickly, especially if you fax them. Hope this helps. Wendy
  6. Margaret This is what my guarantee states: "You will be getting the ATX Total Tax Office through TRX for $699 plus S&H. If TRX is unable to provide you with the ATX TTO for the 2009 tax season then we will refund you in full." The description that Braeden gave us said that as well. I would interpret that to mean that we will receive ATX TTO - but they may not be able to label it as "ATX". The other problem with semantics may be that they are not "re-selling" ATX - they are selling membership in the Alliance and providing the software. I don't care what they call it - as long as it is the software we expect. Wendy
  7. If it's an acknowledgement, shouldn't it say just that? That I acknowledge that I am buying from TRX? That is NOT what it says. Wendy
  8. This is the e-mail: Hey Wendy! We are so excited to have you on board with us this year! Below is the Guarantee you were wanting and I am also attaching the RELEASE LETTER from ATX for you to sign and just email it back to me. Thank you again for support in the Alliance, if there is anything we can do or if you run into any questions or concerns along the way please give me a call! Sincerely, --------------------------- This is the attachment: 224 West Main Street Murfreesboro, TN 37130 Dear, _____________________________, We wish to be released to go with TRX ALLIANCE for the 2009/2010 Tax season. Thank you. Respectfully Submitted, Trx Alliance
  9. I just ordered the $699 ATX TTO package What surprised me was the "release letter from ATX" they want signed that says I want to be released to go with TRX. What's with that? They did include the letter of guarantee of a refund if they cannot provide ATX TTO - looks like they are doing that as a standard thing now. Sorry, JB, they didn't offer pepperoni. Here's hoping this works as well as we think it will. Wendy

    IRA levied

It was just over 3800 and withdrawn in April 2007 - not corrected until 2008. The bank has it listed as a rollover contribution.

    IRA levied

I have a client who was incorrectly billed from MA for sales/use tax in 2007 and tried to handle the matter himself. End result was that the state levied his account for what it thought was due - but levied his IRA account. Due to this, he received a 1099R for distribution in 2007 which, of course had to reported on his 1040. Early 2008 the state admitted their error and refunded the money in 2008. Refunded directly to the client who then took it to the bank to replenish the IRA. He was also assessed levy fees etc which were not refunded. What is the easiest way to handle this? I am waiting to hear from the bank to see how they treated it. Could we call it a 2008 contribution so he gets benefit of it in 2008 since it was not deposited directly to the IRA by MA? This also decreases his potential 2008 contribution. Any thoughts? Thanks. Wendy
  12. And it would be a smart business move for them as well as helpful to us. They would have an audience of close to 1000 people, most of whom are ATX users...and smart and thrifty as well.
  13. And on April 15 we can all say "Let's went, Cisco". In fact, I said that to my 4 year old grandson today and he just looked at me with that "huh?" expression.
  14. It's working now, finally. Whew
  15. Thank you - it's just what I needed!
  16. Thanks KC. I probably used the wrong terminology - sorry. They went to court in December and were granted a divorce - which becomes final after three months. They would like to file MFJ but I wasn't sure if they could. Divorced as of March works for me.
  17. I know that I know this, but can't remember... Clients have not lived together for a few years, but have filed MFJ as it was better taxwise. They are quite amicable and want to do whatever is best financially. Received a divorce in December - and it is final in March. What is the actual date of divorce for filing status - December or March? Thanks for any help.
  18. [ Typical Massachusetts situation: ill-conceived, ill-implemented, ill-presented, and administered by the wrong agency!
  19. MA does not have a separate worksheet - and does not have RDPs nor require gender ID for married. Don't know if this procedure will work with CA, but the way MA works is that we have to file each partner as an individual for federal, then open a new file and prepare a "dummy" federal MFJ so that the appropriate items flow to the MFJ state return. I usually duplicate the more detailed individual federal return, rename, then add the other person's info. E-file each individual federal on it's own. Then e-file the state MFJ. Hope this helps. Wendy
  20. I was on hold for 40 minutes and it was answered by a Taxwise tech...who told me he would have to transfer me. He then said that the Taxwise hold time was usually longer, but had no idea why I called the ATX number and got the Taxwise-only support. Wendy
  21. It was just a couple of files - and not the same type. I tried backup/restore & export/import from the other machine where it opens fine. It won't restore or import.
  22. Found it - thank you. Now why wouldn't the support person tell me about that??? Unfortunately, that didn't solve the problem. When I try to open it I get a message that the "rollover" can't be completed because the prior year return is missing - and when I try to delete it I get a message saying that it can't be deleted because it has been electronically transmitted. Wendy
  23. No, the two are not networked. I had loaded the 2006 last year and was able to roll over most returns. I went to access a return today and it said it could not be accessed because it did not have all the forms (it was a 1099 so I don't know what could have been missing). I thought that perhaps I did not load the archive version, so I tried that. It would not autorun - and when I got it to run it got to the "installing" part and never continued. When I told it to exit, there was a message saying that one or more of the files were corrupted - no further info. I tried to backup/restore the client and also tried to export/import but each time it said that all the forms had not been rolled over. The "tech" (voice on the phone) told me to go to the FTP site and download, but that only accessed the regular site. Thanx Wendy
  24. Has anyone had a problem with the 2006 archive disk? I loaded 2006 onto a new computer and it had a problem opening a file. I tried to update with the archive disk to see if that was the problem, and it would not load. It said something about a corrupted file. Called ATX and was told that I would have to BUY a new disk or could download it from a website...but the address she gave me did not work - it just went to the regular ATX site. Any ideas??? I still have a WORKING version on a different computer, so I am not completely out of luck, but I would like it on the new computer. Thanks Wendy
  25. I asked the same thing of tech support (level IV) and said I was less than happy that my info was on the Taxwise site. She said they are working on a site that will be Taxwise/ATX and will have all info on it and they are building the database and adding ATXers' info. Understandable...but still uncomfortable.
