  1. And some of the clients we represent are considered even lower than that.
  2. I think I'll just stay within driving distance of home.
  3. On the other hand; my client had filed innocent spouse every year that she was married to this piece of work. I had filed her (their) returns every year until 2010 when I could no longer deal with him and would not report his SE income the way he wanted it reported. I referred them to another preparer. However, since the Exxon income was not included in the return, the innocent spouse issue did not enter into it. After their divorce in 2011, SHE returned to me and HE remained with the other preparer. She got hit with the levy in 2013. We were unable to find any way to get out of her paying. The agents were adamant that she was married to him; therefore since he wasn't willing to pay; she had to. She did pay before any more interest accumulated.
  4. We had a case this year wherein we furnished the IRS with phone numbers, addresses, etc. of the guy who did not report his Exxon restitution in 2010. That was the last year they filed MFJ before divorcing. My client, who has a steady job as a teacher and is a homeowner, got slammed for the entire arrears. They never even made an attempt to get it from him. She never knew about the restitution. Sour grapes all around.
  5. Aw, come on Jack! Does that mean that all PMs are also taboo? Even my pleas for consideration because of the beta testing issues I had; fell on deaf ears. Nevertheless, I am looking forward, not back. Too many other more important things to worry about.
  6. In my experience with this type of case, the levy will not be lifted. The IRS will go after the most accessible party. They will take the money owed from the easiest source. In many cases, it is the wronged spouse who ends up paying the bill.
  7. I found the new "safe harbor" rules for OIH beneficial this year for a few clients just because of odd situations like this one. Most of them don't like taking depreciation on their home in any case.
  8. Judy is correct. I just read up on installment sales this morning for another client who is contemplating purchasing a piece of land.
  9. My kids wouldn't dare take my flip phone away from me. I have a tablet that does everything a smart phone will do. I have a flip phone to make and receive telephone calls. For $10 per month, my tablet can access the telephone lines if WiFi is not available. My phone fits in my pocket if I am out and about. End of Story.
  10. Those were the good old days. The beaters or the bowl!
  11. IMO, it is crucial to know why a number goes on which line and where it goes from there. How can you honestly call yourself a tax professional if you trust the program to do all the work. I am ethically in charge of every return I prepare and I watch and check entry as it happens. (Did it go where it was supposed to; and, if not, why not?) As I am training my second year assistant on very simple returns; I want her to know that when she enters a number on a worksheet or form, where it is going to end up and why. As for double entry bookkeeping, I am still setting some of my clients up with double entry spreadsheets so that they learn and understand how to keep track of their own income and expenses. We should take this job very seriously and I am sure that most of US do!
  12. But, you still have to know if the correct numbers flowed to the correct line(s) of the correct form(s). Go back even further to the pencil and carbon paper days. I firmly believe that you have to know your forms.
  13. Certainly one of the best, but always with the support offered on this board. IMO
  14. I know that I can count on one hand the times that I have called tech support for anything. My support is "here" or I figure it out for myself. I called William Tasker once, years ago, and he was awesome. Since then, the only times I have called were for the issues I had with Beta testing 2013 and I got way more help from Jack than I did from ATX.
  15. And another thing, if we leave a glass of water on an end table, Annie will always drink from the glass rather than her bowl. I could add that pretty soon she will be telling us what to do, but she already is.
  16. My dad was an auto mechanic most of his life. I never saw him wear a ring. Most factory workers are not allowed to wear rings to work. Is that only in WI? My husband outgrew his ring from not wearing it so I had it made smaller for me. He got a new one for our 50th and wears that on special occasions. He is in the car business and also uses a chain saw a lot.
  17. Why do they do that when they have clean, fresh water in their bowls? Also, if our cat can escape and get in a couple of good bites of grass, she is overjoyed. My Granddaughter bought her a box of in-house grass which is meant for cats to chew on. Put it by her dishes and she wouldn't touch it. Put it on my desk and she thinks she is sneaking something. Likes it fine. Catherine, give yourself credit for even trying. I love music, but am not even that good at playing the radio.
  18. I never charge for student children. The main reason for this is to prevent the child from filing his own return online and stealing the exemption from the parents. I make it very clear that when they are on their own, they will be paying. I just had a client call me yesterday because he filed his daughter's return and she has not gotten her refund yet. Mom was on the phone and finally received the answer that it would be eight to ten weeks because they have just begun opening paper returns. I asked him why he didn't just bring it in with his and his answer was "Dunno!"
  19. The practitioner line had a wait time of 30 to 60 minutes when I called it last week with the client in the office. The only line that gave me a person in less than five minutes was the identity theft line. Even that was odd. This client was a victim. They couldn't find my 2848. I offered to fax a copy to him on the spot. He said, "You can, but I will probably throw it in the trash before I go home! This is not the correct place to file a 2848." DUH!!! Since I had him on speaker phone, the clients were able to hear that response. Nobody could ever make something like that up.
  20. There is also one, though not as grand, in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. We used to camp there years ago. (And I didn't even know our Catherine then).
  21. They hit me really early on the renewal subject; both with phone and e-mail. I think they were sure that I would sign immediately. I haven't for a couple of personal reasons which I am discussing with ATX reps. Of course, I am getting nowhere fast. They don't care that I had serious issues with the beta program. They are adamant that nobody is going to get special consideration this year. So they say, but I beg to differ as I have seen posts to the contrary; such as two and three year renewal deals. The squeakiest wheels got the grease and those of us who were faithful and supportive of them are told to go sit in the corner and play like nice little kids. I feel strongly that the $85 increase should be waived for those of us who renewed early in 2013 in spite of the 2012 fiasco. I am sitting on the fence for a while.
  22. I got rid of a lot of annoying problems when I updated to IE 11 several weeks ago. I ran the long scan on Malwarebytes the other night and picked up 148 Pup files which are now in Quarantine. I assume that these are pop ups. Will run CC Cleaner tonight. I love Bill Gates. If not for him, we might still be slogging along in the world of non-technology. I often wonder what my life might have been like if I had access to the devices we have today when I was in my teens and twenties. I'll never know the answer to that, but I learned a lot through reading. Today I learn a lot through my computers and tablets. I don't have a smart phone because I don't need or want one. I do have two tablets both with data through either WiFi or ATT. Love IT. These are the little gifts that I give to ME.
  23. Funny, I had to ask those two questions. Most of my drivers keep the reefer fuel separate in order to claim the off-road fuel tax credit. The one I finished the other night actually had almost $800 in fuel tax credit alone. Thanks for explaining those two distinctive terms to the board. You did a far better job of it than I could have. I have had truckers for all of my professional career; my son having been one for over 20 years. Some are employees and some are SE Tractor owners. I remember years ago, running around trying to find a 2106 for to record employee road expenses for all of my Greenhouse drivers. Things have sure changed.
  24. So, we haven't proved a thing. I am not the least bit musical, but have always wished I was. I am artistic as is my right handed son. KC, the brains of the bunch, is right handed. Alas! I think a lot of it has to do with what you do with the gifts you are given. I have always been determined not to let my left hand slow me down in any area of expertise that I wished to pursue.
  25. I remember way back into my teens, I was always trying to create a pun out of anything. Also, my brother and I used to be very fluent at what (in those days) was talking in pig latin. I love words, I love reading and I love both crossword and jigsaw puzzles. Have my stash of both for "someday". I wonder how many others here are left handed.
