The Sprint to the Finish-- Predict Your Wrap Up Time
mcb39 replied to JJStephens's topic in General Chat
No way I could possibly predict when this chaos will end. Had two of my own clients call last night. Am just trying to decide who gets top priority today and will be in this chair for several days to come. Big snowstorm predicted for Wed through Fri. Just perfect to match the way I feel right now. -
So do I!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, good thing you mentioned that! My 225 all include at least one and as many as seven state states as well. So, that ups the ante. Several Partnerships and a ton of Rentals and Sch C returns. My own return is on extension along with many, many more. That late start is a killer.

WHY do they do it, make early withdrawls from their 401Ks
mcb39 replied to mrichman333's topic in General Chat
Even though I don't usually gamble, you're on. Just remember that you are playing to a Royal Flush. -
I also do all of mine alone. So far 225 including extensions. Some of those numbers seem unrealistic, but, of course, it all depends on the complexity of the returns and the time spent in research. I am also training my second year assistant to do more data entry, but the final returns are filed and signed by me.

The wealthiest client I have has done it two years in a row. Because he spends his winters in a warmer climate, he just came in on Friday to pick up his taxes. On their way to see me, they stopped to see their banker. He told them exactly what I wanted to tell them. "Stop spending so much money!" Thankfully, they listened to the banker who had the percentages pegged exactly as printed out in their 1040 Tax Summary. Today I received a short note from them in the mail. "Thank you Marilyn for doing the best you could. Next year will be much better." It was signed with a smiley face. Apparently having over $7000 withdrawn from their checking account for the second year in a row has hit home. They are wonderful people, but they admitted themselves that that they didn't even know what they spent it on. (So, there is hope). -
That is SO true. We had to travel out of town this weekend for a family funeral. Years ago, my mother in law passed away on Apr 13; so you DO have to be prepared for the unexpected. Since I mostly work alone, I always dread illness, but have been pretty fortunate in that area. IMO, the IRS is way too rigid, allowing for nothing less than a major catastrophe as a reason not to file. That may be why they extended the extension from three to six months.

Pliers live in my middle desk drawer too. Amazing how many times they have had to be used. I also keep a small paring knife in my arsenal.

Rita-my left hand thanks you.

Some of the 1099R forms had to be faxed to me. Others that were sent as amendments had absolutely NO changes on them whatsoever. This has been investment nightmare year. In some cases if I hadn't asked where their 1099 consolidation sheet was, it would have gone totally ignored until the CP2000 came a callin'.

That's what I was trying to say, though not so fluently. Thanks Judy.

Yes. I have actually had a client get fined once for late filing even though she had a refund coming. Today is extension day. New clients still coming in. All extensions, then I can polish off as many as I can by Tuesday.

They are beautiful. Are they for real? We still have snow on the ground and the only flowers I see are the ones on my desk and cabinet; bouquets that clients brought.

Probably because the Partnership is taking it as a deduction, thus it is not included in his share of Partnership income, before the addition of the Health Insurance. Therefore, SE tax only once and the deduction on the front of the 1040. It took me a few minutes to wrap my head around this too and still may not be correct, but I think so. I cannot believe the number of SE returns that are coming in from other preparers who never took the SE Health insurance deduction.

More extensions than ever in my life. New clients are still coming in and there are several that I definitely have to finish before Tues. An out of town funeral this weekend isn't helping matters, but people don't choose those kinds of things.

AWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!

Something! Just had a lady come in this AM with three big custard filled and frosted donuts. Another gal brought two small cartons of cut up assorted fruit; one for each of us. (This was just today)

I think it's a stupid form anyway. Why can't we have "signature on file" like they do at the Drs office for insurance forms. If they have already signed it for ten years, why do they have to keep on signing it.
-
But, I want to get paid when he comes in to pick it up and sign the 8879. You know, as in $$$$$$$

I always use Custom Print. Always have, probably always will.

I am so tired that nothing is funny. When it gets to be this time of night, my hand and the mouse don't agree with each other. And, of course, this is the stage when you call a client and nobody is home so you have to move on to another one and then forget what you were doing on the last one. We are such a silly bunch.

First Time Homebuyer Credit - (thought this one had died)
mcb39 replied to Ray in Ohio's topic in General Chat
Use Form 982 to report the COD of personal home. It will not be taxable. I don't know the answer to the FTHB credit, but there is a worksheet somewhere. I just don't have time to look for it right now. -
If they are DOT drivers, it is $59 per overnight day. That is for meals and entertainment, small incidentals. If they pay for their motels, that is separate. Make sure they aren't reimbursed for any of this stuff. Some are, some aren't; some get partial. DOT drivers are hauling people or product interstate. They are the ones who get the 80%.
