  1. Here is the graduation from peas to squash. Much better. Jack, you have SO much to look forward to. It gets better and better.
  2. The long list fro Pikester is absolute; except you have to remember that the $59 per diem is for "meals and incidentals". Any more questions, keep asking. Some of us have had OTR for years. It is a hard life and even harder to show a profit with the high cost of fuel these days. Then, there are lumper fees and reefer fees and an off-road fuel credit for reefer fuel. Good Luck.
  3. I just finished a return for a OTR trucker last night so will try to help you out. For the three months he was an employee, he deducts his expenses on the 2106 which then takes the deduction to the Sch A. When he becomes a subcontractor with his own truck, all of his expenses go onto the Sch C. If he is a DOT driver carrying products or people interstate, his meal per diem is $59 for overnights. The truck repairs, and any other expenses will now be entered on the Sch C.
  4. The best case scenario is not to let them happen in the first place. But, since I also have a handful, I can't call the kettle black. In my case, I know that it is always the same ones and eventually they will all pay. However, I want the money NOW. I narrowed the problem this year by refusing to file until I had a check in hand, even if I had to hold it for a week or two. I just had a call from one of the laggards who is picking his up after lunch.
  5. Here is our six month old last night with his first taste of peas!
  6. I put a fold over year sticker on the spine of every folder. These are a different color every year. This year was a glittery red with a silver 13. I stole that idea from the dental profession; for which I worked part time for over 20 years. Many positive comments from new clients this year on the presentation folders.
  7. Knowing how you were looking forward to this event; and having a 6 month old Great Grandbaby; I am aware of the overflowing elation and love that you are feeling right now. Congratulations
  8. I always use Tenenz. Usually order when they have the early bird discount, but due to the flow of business, this year had to order extra mid season. They always arrive the next day. They will send you a catalog and free samples of any product that you want to see before purchasing.
  9. I have had three phone calls and an e-mail about renewing. In fact, my rep called again today. I told her that I needed more time to think about it, especially in view of the $85 increase in price. I don't think that it should be my onus to pay for the mistakes of others. The fact that they delivered this year does not make up for the frustrations of 2012; especially when they deny that there were all sorts of different discounts for different folks in 2013. Basically, the squeaky wheel got greased. If you didn't complain enough in 2012, they just assume that you didn't have any issues. Also, I never even installed my "reward" for beta testing 2013. None of the choices were of any value to me.
  10. Yes, more than once, in fact. I am also still contemplating.
  11. This is when the All States Quickfinder comes in handy. I buy it about every third year or so.
  12. Lion is correct. I had a WI resident who had the W2 Federal wages split between six different states. I had to file five non-resident state returns and pay the proportionate part. Then, WI has a form OS which calculates the credit you get for the tax paid to the other states for WI. Basically, WI taxes the employee for all of it because he is a resident here. (These are really fun) but not so difficult once you get a handle on it. There are probably different rules for different states, but that is the way it is done here.
  13. Yeah! I can still turn on my old computer and listen to him roar. I loved that roar, but I also love the sound of a diesel!
  14. I am certainly not afraid of Rita, and I could never walk a mile in her shoes. Maybe when I was younger, but not now. I admire her tenacity and cherish her friendship.
  15. Just to add a little humor to the thread, I had a client call me last week to say that he had gotten a letter from the IRS suggesting that he might qualify for EIC. He trusted me to know what they were talking about. Well, by golly, I overlooked that one. He is on disability for a bad heart and his wife works two part time jobs. No qualifying child. I ran the numbers and told him that he was qualified for $8 in EIC. He laughted. I told him that it wasn't worth amending for, but if they had given him a form to fill out, he should send it in. If they want to send him a check for $8, let them. He said he would think about it. (This is due diligence in reverse).
  16. I believe you should take the deduction. I have a closet in the old part of my OIH, but have never counted the SF of the closet. I also have a lot of SF in the basement that never gets counted and should. I found this year that for a certain few clients; switching to the safe harbor method was the best thing to do. You can take your pick, but in my opinion, you safely qualify for OIH. One important fact to remember is that the deduction is not really for a Home Office, but rather for "Business Use of the Home". I have clients who use parts of their home to store supplies and tools for their Sch C businesses. This also qualifies. If push comes to shove, I have clothes in the closet, but I also have lots of extra toner cartridges, paper, envelopes and computer parts and backup drives in there. If you are entitled to a deduction, take it.
  17. If he tells the truth and has it documented, he doesn't have to worry about it. IMO
  18. We did install a new modem and secured the connection. We installed a remote thermostat; which was wonderful for a while. We also installed a single remote camera to watch the sump pump pit. Also wonderful for a while. However, the internet connection keeps going out and until we go up there to reset the modem, we cannot access either device. When I am up there for more than one day will have to call the provider to find out why we keep losing the signal.
  19. I agree that business is increasing rather than the opposite. Children are growing up and going off to college. The parents want to keep them as dependents so bring the students' returns in as well. (I do not charge for student children of my clients, for that reason) Nor do I charge for active military; or wounded in action military. However, older clients have more investments and want more help with financial planning. New clients are sending more new clients. Preparers are retiring and referring clients. Wherever they are coming from, this is the busiest year that I have ever had and the returns just keep becoming more complex. More extensions this year than in all the prior years combined. I am seeing more rentals, more small businesses, more college credits, etc. People who have lost jobs are trying to make a living in whatever way they can and have no idea how to handle the tax repercussions. They come for advice, they come for help and they bring their (sometimes very complex) tax returns as well. I am grateful; but I am also here to help. The foundation of my business is not "all about money"!
  20. As in, "Pick up your stuff, this is not a storage shed!" The ones who pay up front will usually pick them up when they come in next year. Also, since extensions are filed, DEEP silence.
  21. Does that ever sound familiar. We sent out nastygrams on the 14th.
  22. Or here! Anytime, if you like snow! I actually prepared one return today, went to lunch with hubby and took a nap with the phone unplugged. I feel like a zombie, but a happy one. Yes, for now, one a day is just about right! Hair appt tomorrow, a little shopping.....oh, such bliss! Tomorrow, my license plate will tell the true story, though I won't be driving my Jeep if we get the possible snowstorm that is predicted for tonight. No salty roads for my baby. I may just be one of very few Great-Grandmas who drives a Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland with all the toys.; many of which have never been used. This has been an unforgettable tax season. Even after all these months, I still love what I do and who I deal with either in this office or on this board. However, the relief from the pressure is awesome.
  23. I just finished the last return that had to be filed tonight. At the same time, I released all of the state returns. Onward to the extensions tomorrow, but the pace will be much slower other than for all of the pickups that are still here. Good night, all and have a Blessed and Happy Easter.
  24. Haven't you learned never to go to the bathroom without the telephone? I sent my girl home this AM; just called to see if she can come back in for a few hours. Getting crazy around here. When I finally get to bed tonight, I want to be able to sleep.
