  1. I have had it happen in the past and it was just about the straw that broke the camel's back for me to walk out in front of a semi truck going down the road out in front of my office Turns out, in my case, the directory target got changed. I do not know what they did to fix it but tech support logged into my system found the returns, told the software where to find them and that was the last issue like that that I have experienced. It was not this year - and I do not recall at the moment what year it was. But it not take them long to fix the issue.
  2. Probably not. Unless they and the backup were deleted for some reason. There are several scenarios that come to mind that would cause the returns to disappear. You have two problems: 1 - identifying why this is happening; 2 - fixing the problem. I believe your only recourse is a call to tech support. Good luck!
  3. Search in the box above for "server error". This has been a well discussed topic. You should find your answer before tech gets to your call.
  4. If there is any question about the employee vs contractor issue, run through the form SS-8. If there is no question about that then consider Form 8919.
  5. My opinion is that this should have been an employer employee relationship and there should have been a W-2. I will leave it to your judgment as to where you take it from there.
  6. I think you have to add a 2106 for the spouse.
  7. Rich - my apologies! One would think that at this stage of life, I would know better! With that new information, I stand by my recommendation but also believe he received bad advice from the attorneys. Just my 2 cents.
  8. I get concerned when someone is called a "straight shooter" in one sentence but acted fraudulently in a previous sentence (forging a signature to get a check cashed). The correct way would have been to return the check to Walmart and request it be re-issued either in the estate's name or the widower's name. However, if I am the widower, and for the amount of money involved, I probably would have done the same thing. I think I would forget the return for the deceased and just put the income on his return, paper-filing of course, with an explanation of nominee income. Good luck!
  9. Nothing! I do not do that kind of work during busy season. That said, my May and June are starting to look like they are going to be pretty good months with all of the non-busy time work I am deferring.
  10. The responses sound reasonable to me. My clients know better than to ask that kind of question. They learned along time ago that I march to the beat of my own drummer and don't give a flip about what other practitioners do. The folks on this forum being an exception to that statement, of course!
  11. I have a full time person that does all of that for me. But I make the client understand up front that I charge her out at $55 per hour and that fee will be added to the tax prep fee. I actually like shoe box clients. That is a profit center for me. If I did not have a person like that the client would understand that I would charge $90 per hour to do that kind of work. They could either pay me to do it or take it home and bring it back summarized.
  12. Ignore the 1099-K and report the actual income on the schedule C worksheet. 1099-K is not a 1099-Misc and should not be entered as such. You should be certain, however, that the total revenue you report is at least equal to what is shown on the 1099-K. The actual revenue is most likely more than what is on the 1099-K. The 1099-K shows only the income the driver received via credit card.
  13. Assuming the client was on the accrual basis of accounting for tax purpose, the income is recognized in the year that the liability is known to be overstated. No amended return is necessary. No messing with retained earnings permitted.
  14. Thanks! It is more beautiful than the picture portrays! And we (my wife works here with me) are trying to spend more time there. I hired a part-time CPA to be in the office when I am not. Tax season has me here 5 days per week, but after April 15th, we will be in the office just two or three days per week.
  15. 60 miles - an hour and 15 minutes on non-snow days; an hour and a half with weather. Up until 2 and a half years ago, I had a 5 to 7 minute commute. But in anticipation of retiring someday, we moved to a piece of God's country. Believe it or not, being there at the beginning and ending of the day makes the commute tolerable.
  16. No need for that! We are all in this together and are here to lend one another a hand when we can. Your turn is next! Glad I could help this time!
  17. Just a thought - since your fiscal year end is in 2016, which means your fiscal year beginning is in 2015, are you using the 2015 software to generate your extension?
  18. I'm envious! Our post office does not even have a drive through!
  19. Yep - I have about three to four weeks of work in front of me. And it shows no sign of slowing down.
  20. Thanks for the heads up. Almost makes one start to think that two separate systems are needed for us in this business. One that has absolutely no client information on it that can be used for email and web surfing. And one strictly for doing client work.
  21. I can see the argument both ways. It could be a payment for the use of the space or it could be payment for lost business. The answer to that question would dictate where it should go. You would have to ask the client the intent.
  22. I am having no trouble. Are you clicking the link that grays out? Mine grays out too but when I click on it I am taken to a web site where I have to select the year, the form and the line item. Then click "show results", then click "show discussion" and that takes you to the intelliconnect website where you can find the information you are looking for.
  23. Did you have to click the down arrow to get to the search internet button? If so, click on the down arrow again and click the search internet button again. That will close the bar for you.
  24. And there is another popup tooltips check box under the "all managers" of the preference menu.
  25. I did the update and have not experienced any issues except for the one I believe ILLMAS is talking about - and I do not find it to be that annoying, but that's just me. I am not sure about the disablement, but check in your preferences and see if the "display intelliconnect tool tips" is checked. That is under the "open return" preferences. That might have something to do with the pop-ups.
