  1. Jack: This may be affecting some folks. The bottom line is the software was not designed for speed over a network, nor to be used in a peer to peer network, only a server-client enviornment. Why they will not admit this, or address it, I don't know. And I spent 12 hours on the phone on Thursday and Friday, to discover this. It wasn't my system. Rich
  2. MsTabby: The "If I was Dr. Zatersky.." Line was enough. I would have hung up right there. Don't worry about him Rich
  3. Bob: Sorry about the sad reminder of the anniversary, Good luck in the future! Rich
  4. Dave: Since this is academic question, no, you don't have to play in the game to get taxed in that state. The Baseball players have it the worst, then the Basketball, and hockey throws in Canada taxes.. The football players divide into 10 games "out of State" and the rest presumed in the home teams stadium (8 reg season and 2 preseason, which are not paid for, but part of the calc if you get hired...) Then you have the issue of living in one state, and playing in another. Many athletes head to Florida or Texas for that reason. Obviously the endorsement deal money and the NFL Players Association funds get taxed in the state of residence. Rich
  5. Joel: The IRS may have issued the tax ID number to state a 12-31-2012 year end, but you get to file them, and note that the tax period started on the date of death. And then you have another 4-5 months, and the SS-4 was wrong. Rich
  6. Joel: Get your retainer up front. 1,000 to $1,500. Extend the 1040 for Mom. The 1041's are due 4-5 months from now. Sort out all the income, and where it should be reported. Excel works great for this. The IRA was distributed according to the IRA Contract between the mother and the IRA holder, and the will doesn't matter. The kids will get 1099-R's if they got the cash, if not, it went to her estate and is taxed on the K-1. And those tax $ are due in 2013.. Sounds like a tasty deal to me. Rich
  7. I am using Windows 7 professional, and getting good results. I can use that on two computers as once. Can not use my Peer to peer network to enter ATX at the same time with my WinXPsp3 machine however. Rich
  8. On Tuesday, MArch 5th, I had the pleasure of working with the program for about 8 hours straight, and got about 13-15 tax returns done. That made me happy. The system can work. The Print Manager was slow to load it is kinda annoying to click on "file copy" and it has to think to pull up the forms, and then click on "client copy" and have to wait all over again... But I like the "Check All" box. I check that, and clear ALL the Forms, and then click the ones I want. That is usually only the Fed Cover Letter, the 8879 and the MD Efile form for the "file copy", then all the things I need for the "client copy", and then the 8879 and MD Efile for the "preparer copy". Once I click print, the return prints in a reasonable amount of time. About the same as last year. Then I change the Client Copy destination to Adobe PDF and create my PDF copy for my file. Is does not take much longer to do all that then in 2011. The system has not printed anything that I didn't want to print. It seems that if that is happening, you just not unchecking the boxes. I liked on last year that they were listed across the screen all at once, that made it easier to line up the right things to print in each "copy" but I like the direction that it is going. Rich
  9. This^^^ If it is a business, then you have to run the business. Why would you incur a dollar of expense for a business going nowhere? Becasue your client is trying to deduct personal expenses. So, there is no profit motive. Rich
  10. Wouldn't you just have a partner K-1 that is listed as the estate, that steps into the shoes of the deceased partner? Obviously no Sch SE income from that. Rich
  11. Guess he didn't like the 2nd Bag fee... They would have capped him if he did that at Detroit Metro. Rich
  12. Yes, it is 10 years, but the IRS will extend it. They would be stupid not too... Rich
  13. And it can take two years to acceptance. And the IRS wants 20% of the offer up front. (offer of $1,000, pay $200 with the application) If taxpayer is young, the IRS will wait. They have 20 years. And expect to send in a new 656 and 433 every six to 12 months till acceptance. Rich
  14. We billed $1,500 for 1099 prep in 2012. ABout 21 customers. I don't bill for the form, I just bill the time it takes. So, it doesn't matter to me if my office staffer is chasing down contractor info or typing it into the system. I don't use ATX to do the 1099's. I use either Qbooks if I get the file from the client, or 1099-ETC from AMS in OK. $250 for that program. I use the 1099-ETC for after the fact payroll for clients also. I think I can efile for free. But I still send paper... Rich
  15. Are you able to run multiple computers on the same network file? One person can use it in my office at a time. Rich
  16. Ron: I am not surprised in Inkster. I hope nobody from the office wasn't seriously hurt. Rich
  17. Florida Tax Man: On the MYATX Community they have a similar process for fixing what you are fixing. You go in and try to replace various individual forms. They propose that you delete and reload ALL the forms. You just delete the entire "Assets" folder that you describe. Then you restart ATX program and update and reload all the forms. Detail here: FIX: Can open program, but not any returns Posted by Go200mph: Just got off the phone with ATX and this is what Tech guy showed me. I am on a stand alone laptop, Windows 7, 1.66 ghz, 3 gigs ram. Could open program but not any returns. Files in the Asset folder are being corrupted. Here's the fix. 1. Right click Windows Start button 2. Click on C: Drive 3. Click on Program Data Folder-(this could be a hidden file and if so click on Organize header on Tab Row, click on Folder and Search options, Click on View Tab, under Advanced Settings you will see a line that reads Show Hidden Files, Folders, or drives. Make sure that is highlighted. Click Apply and then OK)Then hit Program Data Folder. 4.Click CCH Small Firm Services Folder 5. Click ATX 2012 6. Click Assets 7. Click 2012, once highlighted, Delete Folder It is resident folder for all forms and Instructions, so deleting it will seem like you are losing a bunch of info. No Client data is in this folder, so don't worry. Since all forms and Instructions are deleted, you must then go to Return Manager tab, go to Updates, click on Adjust Form Update setting, choose all federal forms but only the state you need now.(this will shorten time of update). This has allowed me to open Existing and New returns. Still takes about 2 minutes to open return but I can now do returns, Hallelujah. He also said if future problems opening returns means that files again got corrupted so do the above process and it should allow you to work. They are working on solving problem now. ------------ Posted by WDMoss: This worked earlier in the week for me, too. I am running Windows XP, so the address string to get to the Assets folder is a little different, but I have had no crash/won't open problems since. ----------- NOTE: I posted earlier in this topic telling how to make hidden files visible
  18. Delete the return and start over. Sometimes it is quicker and easier to fix that one return than trying to fix the software. Rich
  19. Make sure you have updated to 12.6 or 12.7 properly, on the computer that will be the host to all the other workstations. Make sure you have "shared" the ATX2012 folder on this computer and ATX is NOT in "program files" folder. It wants to load there automactically. Also, do a rollover of at least one client and OPEN it. That updates everything! Then run netsetup on the workstations. But first, run the unistall portion of Netsetup. That way the workstation is "clean". Then re-run netsetup on each workstation. You should end up with using the same return manager on all computers. You may have to change the rollover manager location of the 2011 files on each workstation however. Rich
  20. No, not at all... That would be a personal residence, But not a rental property. They would be added to basis. And if they took any cash out, and did not put it into the property, that portion of interest expense would be non-deductible on the rental property. Rich
  21. Ron: Glad you got yours to run. Mine is now. Trying to figure out the print routines, etc, but I will. If all Drake picked up was 400 customers in the past month, then ATX isn't doing to bad. If you think about the "gross" number of preparers, which is not increasing that fast... That is a small gain. I know NOW that I should have loaded that disc that ATX mailed me in November. And got it running, tested, whatever, then. I will do that next year. I usually do not start really doing returns till after the Super Bowl... Rich
  22. Someone mentioned different markets? If someone came in, handed me all thier stuff, and asked about an estimate, I would talk about the my fees, and what I thought of the info they gave me. IF they didn't like that, then I hand it all back and say: "Have a nice day!" If I thought all they were looking for was EIC fraud, they are not coming in my front door anyway... Someone mentioned "new client discounts?" I will give you the first half hour of my time, so that *I* can decide if *I* want to do your return. It is NOT the Clients choice. It's mine. They may think that get the choice, but they do not.... Just my take. I do not finish returns in front of clients, I take the info, and then get it done later, and you can come pick it up. No sitting in the chair and watching me do it. Rich
  23. BArt: Try using Google Chrome to download. The Internet Explorer 7 is not supported on ATX's website. Rich
  24. Ron: You are the luckiest man alive.... Can't get ANYTHING to work right. I can work with three seperate workstation all doing thier own things.. Rich
