  1. I'm not ready to jump in with this kind of stuff either. Seems to me to be a way to keep charging you for fees, and if you don't pay, where does your data go? Security has already been mentioned, so I won't go there.
  2. And if you have neighbors with strong arms you are on good terms with, it might be nice to keep their numbers handy. When my mum was too weak to get out of the car, and my dad was too weak to help her, the neighbor's high school football playing sons saved the day. And it saves on any EMT charges.
  3. I finally had to fill up my gas tank again on Sunday-the last time was March 9! I did use the car to go to the bank and post office, and dog & cat food runs. My insurance provider called up to ask about mileage per year, since I put down pleasure only and 5k or less. I was able to tell them at the time I had put about 300 miles on the car since 12/31 since I write down my mileage each year (good accountant/tax pro that I am!). Its still at less than a thousand for the year. I do love working from home!
  4. I took some time off and am now trying to start the extensions. It's hard to get going but I want to work a bit every day.
  5. lol; these things have been floating around my house for years! I'm glad you guys can help me clean out my house. I'm staring at two of them now. They're the 2009 version-maybe y'all can start a chain?
  6. I did 164 returns and have 77 on extension, plus more coming in (just booked a new client for Monday). Grossed about 27k so far. I know I don't charge enough, but not too much overhead. I've also started sending pdf files through my portal instead of mailing hard copies, although many of my clients prefer the hard copies. And for my RDP clients, I have to mail a paper return, so they get a hard copy. If I could get an assistant for the price of Jack's, I'd do it! Got to call a possible intern...
  7. I've got a bunch of these CDs. probably have a few extras since there were a bunch brought to a CSTC meeting and I nabbed whatever was left over.
  8. I'm afraid of the statement 'I have never taken any CPE'. CPE is one way of finding out what you don't know, which IMHO is just as important as knowing what you do know. Just got a new client I'm amending...said preparer 'was about 70 years old and got the deer-in-the-headlights look when asked if the non-working same-sex spouse could be taken as a dependent'. And they are in CT, where civil unions have been in existence for quite a while, and doesn't have any of the community property issues we have here in CA.
  9. I was contacted a few years ago by a cousin on my maternal grandfather's side; my grandfather died before I was born, and I didn't know anyone from that side. She has been doing geneology, and last year visited Poland and met up with distant cousins there. My sister and I would like to make that trip too. Since we do have a copy of my great-grandfather's baptismal certificate, I have a lot of info from where he was from...the certificate gives the town he was baptized in, the village where he actually lived, his father's profession (glassworker), and luckily, my great aunt translated it before she died! My sister speaks a smattering of Polish and has given me the language course she had..maybe soon I'll actually have time to take it!
  10. That's why my extensions are such a bitch. And CA will take a federal extension, but if you have a balance due, can void on their whim. Therefore, parents picking up the vouchers for the $12 due on their kid's return. And a lot of state vouchers going out. Last minute screw up: I sent a PDF to a client with what I thought were the estimate payments and 4868. Luckily we talked a bit ago, and she said something about sending in $54. Huh? the extension payment was more like $4000. So I checked; I sent the 1040-V, not the 4868. Luckily too, the West Sacramento post office is open until midnight. Whew. She had to interrupt her dinner at a friends and run home. And I felt so good about getting her vouchers uploaded before I went to sleep so she could take care of them in the morning and not rush.
  11. Yes, because sometimes we all get frazzled or are confronted with esoteric stuff but someone else has seen it. And at the end of the season, I don't feel 'dumb' posting something I should know, but has slipped away in the fog.
  12. I've attended a few of our local NAEA chapter meetings/CPE too. I'm not an EA, but the CPE is good, and I'm not the only CPA I've met there! Also, the American Society of Women Accountants (and you don't have to be a woman to attend or be a member!) One of my new clients (CPA, but not a tax CPA) is interested in attending those to get her CPE. BTW, Bob, I like your new picture better than the old one. The kewpie doll always gave me a startle...it was kinda creepy.
  13. See if there are any local group like the CA Society of Tax Professionals in your area (or an NATP chapter). CSTC meets every month for dinner & 2 units of CPE. It's a great way to get CPE and network with local tax geeks. Cost for our chapter is $25 for members and most of that is for the meal. And meetings are in the evening, so you don't have to lose work. Just look around, you'll find all the CPE you need for a reasonable price. And I hate self-study..give me a webinar or seminar any day.
  14. might get a few more requests for extensions, but all on my list are filed except for two I'm waiting to hear back whether they want to send in payments. Tonight either I go to a concert or watch a movie. Yay!!!! :P
  15. lol...my mother's maiden name was a pretty short one for a Polish one, but her mother...and I have a few family names with no vowels. Come to think of it, it'd make a pretty good password.. 5 extensions to go....
  16. I don't know about the house, but you have to file two returns for PA, one single and one as deceased. I did that for my dad & mum the year my mum died. Seemed to be the final insult to a grieving man. I'm not sure about the nominee factor; separate property state, and my mum only had some pension and one bank account in her name. Pensions aren't taxable in PA.
  17. You need a prescription to get medical marijuana.
  18. I think they ask at the beginning of the interview if anything has changed. and you check off things that have, and they take you to the screens to update. But don't tell.
  19. I was working on two computers last night-printing returns from one and doing extensions on the other. Another long slog, and for me, it's lots of RDP clients for which I have to do three returns to figure out if they owe on any or not. And some of them are new and need to be set up. Another very long 3 days for me.
  20. Yup, it is. Got some in the same situation.
  21. One of my ex-pats luckily has a bit of interest and dividends. Except she has too many 'types of income' from two different jobs to efile. I love the June 15 date right now.
  22. I'm still working on the extensions. I am so fried I don't even want to think about them. I think I got the next to the last return done, but still need to look at it with clearer eyes than I had last night (or have right now). One more for the kid across the street-he has 3 W2s so I might be able to handle that.
  23. Don't think so....has to be voluntary, like a 401k or an IRA.
  24. I sing 'Another one off the desk! and another one gone, and another one gone, another one off the desk!'
  25. Nowhere but the back yard (and hot tub ) until May 27, when I head out to DC to visit my sister, and then up to Chambersburg for my college reunion (photo is from the last one), the a hop to Pittsburgh to visit my brothers & friends, and back to DC. Then a music festival the 4th of July weekend and Burning Man at the end of August. Planning these have kept me sane, especially the last few weeks. I still have a few I need to get out, and all of my extensions to do. Next year, cutoff is March 15.
