I got mine too. I rarely use the express answers, since I prefer the Tax Book, but since I got the latter on CD this year, it'll be nice to have a hard copy of something if I have to look something up in front of clients.

It should be fixed by the myriad of updates we'll get every day.

Once I had the IRS goof up and apply a $25 refund from 2003 to a later year when 2003 was filed really late. Once. But I think you are SOL on the SOL. In your second circumstance, you can get the refunds from the still open years; however, failure to pay and file may still hit for 2010. I often have late filers file in person at the local IRS office. It works very well, and the client has proof of filing.

It's in the Tenenz catalog. I liked what I saw when I tested it out, and also saw it recommended on a few other messageboards. I'm no kind of programmer or designer, and it is very easy to work with to get the look you want, and to update. It has a paypal feature too, which I'd like to get set up, as well as the ability to link to my facebook page. I hate having to pay fees for things like paypal, but it will help with remote clients.

I'm busy doing amendments for new clients that made errors on their self-prepared returns, still have one long term client that just said, I'll file late, and one who I finally got back in after she became a client because of CA levying her wages for being a non-filer. We got 2010 filed, but she couldn't find her 1098-Ts for her education credits, and there was nothing on the IRS wage & income transcripts. I even had her on my laptop in my office trying to look up her account to get the info (I went to Sac State too, I know what you could get online in 1999 and I'm sure there's even more now) but she couldn't remember her log-in. Was supposed to bring by the docs on Tuesday, but no show, no call, no nothing....and I warned her that the IRS told me an SFR was in the works. Sigh. And these people get refunds. Does not getting a chunk o' cash not matter? And then there's my new Fujitsu scanner still in the box. I want to start converting at least my no-longer-client files to paperless. If I don't, I'll never get my current client files back in the cabinets!

I was not in the first rush to file the paperwork last year either. I waited about a month and it went through without a hitch. I don't see any reason to be in the first rush now either!

One year I had one like that. The client was faxing me her mother's papers (from the Bay Area) and then drove over at about 9pm to give me her own stuff while I was working on mom's. That one got filed about 11:45pm. Never again. Then I woke up this morning and my internet was out. It was working fine about 2 am when I went to sleep. How timely is that?

AGI amounts; worked in 2 states, Resident in 1 only, how do I tackle this?

You see, now if you had posted earlier, you might have found a tax pro that thrives on this kind of thing (waves hand) and thinks multi-state tax is fun and challenging. Not to mention SE foreign tax issues. You won't pay bottom dollar, but you will get good work and not be stressing on Oct. 16. Unless of course, you wait until Oct. 15 to contact said tax pro. All in, I hope you could understand jainen's explaination. We're both in CA, and CA does get a bit complex. It looks as if you did 'get it' to the point where you can file. Being overseas makes things more difficult, but with the magic of the internet & email, it is possible to work remotely. -
Ok, from doing a return for someone in Canada: the FEC worksheet does not carry over the employer info when rolled. The 8891 does not roll over the plan name, account number or address when rolled over. foreign addresses don't fit in the address spot for e-file.

I got some acks! The ones from Friday at least. That means my own return went through. lol. I was out of touch for about the same length of time late august/early september. literally two nights and one day between Burning Man (very limited wi-fi and no cell) and a trip to NYC. Both were planned well in advance, and I warned everyone that I would not be doing work during that time, altough at least in NYC I could get calls & email! Then last Monday my boyfriend very unexpectedly lost his job after already knowing his house would go into foreclosure and I've been dealing with his severe depression all last week. At least he is perking up to the point of 'I didn't hate the fact I woke up this morning; indifference is better I guess'. Its an improvement. Well, just picked up a new client. Gotta churn out returns.

I got mine done a week or so ago, but didn't want to file til I got the funds into my solo 401(k). So I filed friday, but haven't received acks since then. Bleh. Another pick-up in a few minutes, I have a new partnership being held up by one of the partners that 'took care of it' by filing it all on her personal Sch C. Has to tell my client or me just what all the expenses were for. So SHE won't get a late filing penalty, but my client and her wife will unless she gets to it quickly. Like really quickly.

Crap, I forgot about that. I'm trying to get everything done and out so that I can go see a friend's performance in Carmel on Saturday. It's about a 5 hour drive, but he is in from Japan. Bad, bad timing! I mean I have been invited to a cousin's party, the performance, my women's group is having a 'thank you for your support' dinner......all this upcoming weekend. I could be a total social butterfly, but..... I was NOT involved in the planning of ANY of these events.

Is anyone else getting them? I sent in returns Friday, but they are still showing as transmitted to agency.
-
I love the shots of them curled up together. Congrats! But get used to napping; hopefully they both nap at the same time, and so can you!

His website is www.hodgen.com I emailed him questions regarding this and also spoke with him on the phone. Nice guy, and he is teaching a webinar this month on individual international tax.

A tax attorney I spoke with regarding foreign retirement accounts said they and the Fideicomiso were the biggest areas on noncompliance he fixes. So I'd say, no grey area, it is a foreign trust.

The income is reported as 'other income' on line 21. And yes, no expenses are allowed.

Ok, it's print manager again. I LOVE that it now saves what you've checked or unchecked should you need to print again; very time saving. But I am really really sick of having to uncheck 'options' and other unnecessary crap in the Client Letter and Billing invoice. At least give a spot to choose what you want to always print with preparer and client copies of the client letter. I'm also tired of having to delete the multiple copies of state refund 1099-Gs. I do have the info in the payer manager, so I just choose 'State of CA-Franchise Tax Board' from the drop-down box, but I have to always delete at least one copy since I charge by the form and don't want extraneous copies on my invoice. I'll probably find more stuff as I finish my extensions.

I'm going to resurrect this. 'Continue' is still giving me an error message. I had to override the dates and country to get the program to work, but the 'Date left is invalid' error message won't let me create an efile. :scratch_head:

The form asks when she moved to various places; the statement goes with the form when she was in and out of the country. I'm going for accuracy, not what makes ATX calculate it correctly. If there is a flaw in the program, that is an issue with the program, not with my entries.

I can pull up my full cell phone bill, which shows what numbers I was calling and the length of the calls. So, in theory, I could figure out the exact percentage. If you have two cells, and use one for biz & one for personal, you might want to fight it. But 80% is very generous. Take it and be happy!

That's what it is, under MACRS. Stupid and unrealistic, but what it is.

Hi all, I'm doing a 2555 for a US citizen client with the following fact pattern: Lived in Egypt getting master's degree from 2006-March 15, 2010. Moved to Chad and worked until June 30 (she works with NGO's and refugees), then came home to the US until Nov 24, when she moved to Kenya, where she is still living and working. She qualifies for the foreign income exclusion under the substantial presence test, but when I enter this on the tab in ATX, it puts 'Egypt' as the place she worked for most of the year, when she did not work in Egypt at all, and uses dates of Aug 2006- July 2007 for the qualifying dates. Without overriding, how do I get this to work? I can choose any 12 month period with the 330 days to qualify her; why is the program entering anything? Also, I'm getting an error message when I enter 'current' as the date leaving for Kenya. She hasn't left, she's still there.
