Oh they have workers comp. and now they're being audited. The appointment was set up to take place at the employees home, if you can believe it!

I just have people put their stuff in my locking mailbox. It's large enough that it doesn't affect mail delivery, and people usually text me when they've dropped stuff off.

In the wonderful year that contained no last minute tax law changes (was it 2010? 2011?) the copy of ATX I got right after Thanksgiving was durn near complete. Most years I've had enough forms to start my return (1040, Sch C, Sch E, etc.) and the amount complete depended on just how screwed up and late congress was. Do you remember the year we had to put the tuition deduction on the DPAD line? The IRS was begging congress to make up their minds because they had to have the law in place by Thanksgiving in order to have the forms ready. Congress didn't make the deadline. I liked how this year they just put 'reserved' by the lines that may or may not have made the cut. The IRS wasn't going to have that issue again.

RTRPs, EAs, competency test and continuing education
joanmcq replied to TaxMan60601's topic in General Chat
If I posted the certificates from all the classes I attend, I would have run out of wall space in my office 9 years ago, and in the rest of my house 5 years ago. I have my CPA certificate, my degrees, my biz license (required) and certificates from tax & accounting organizations I belong to. -
Anyone on here have experience in one of these? My client is sending me the notice now, but I thought I'd get a jump on it. They have one part time employee in NY who hasn't worked any hours this year. They aren't located in NY; it's a small nonprofit and the books are kept in Seattle and it's located in CA.

Sort of NT - IRS appologizes for targeting Tea Party in 2012

See, there's a difference in perception that I was alluding to. Was she told she could not have her husband present, or did the agent say she didn't need to have her husband present. Since she complained that the auditor didn't let her pick a time that was convenient for her, I can see this conversation: Auditee: but the appointment is for noon on a Tuesday! My husband has to work. Auditor: he doesn't have to be here. It's not his business. Perception: the auditor discouraged me from having my husband go along. She didn't get representation at the start, or she wouldn't have ever talked to the auditor, and hubby along or not along would never have come up. -
Sara, I am not underrating the need for experience and training. I am one of those that can't believe that ANY person calling themselves a tax professional doesn't take a ton of continuing education to stay on top of the game. She needs training, and needs to understand the concepts behind what she's doing. And nothing goes out without review. But hell, in the dark hours right before April 15, I had her reviewing MY work; are all the numbers consistent? Did I make any typos? And there are Cs, and then there are other Cs. Some of my well trained clients come in with everything so well organized its just data entry. Others? Whoo boy!

No, I didn't know about Moveon.org's new branch. I haven't been following them that much lately; extremism from all sides pisses me off. I hate it when I can tell that manipulative words are being used to elicit an emotional response. Right or left. I see a lot of it being used on this issue from the right, mostly because KC posts a lot of it on this board.

How do you know you are chosen?

I'd like to be able to have my assistant printing while I'm finishing up returns. After just two months she had graduated from copying, setting up files, etc to doing the basic data entry on all the returns, including putting together the spreadsheet I use to do my RDP community property splits. Although the jumpdrive/export method would work for the clients she initially sets up, I don't want to have to do the same in reverse to have her print and assemble. My time is more valuable! I think with a basic 1040 class, she'd be able to do most EZ & itemized deduction returns, and probably Sch C & E too, and I would just have to review them. Smart woman I hired, and to top it all off, she knows bookkeeping too!

Move.on collects donations, but they aren't tax deductible. They admit to and are a lobbying organization.

I'm not sure. Since its off season, I'll start with 2012. I've never even set up a network. Even if I can just get my assistant access to my documents files it would be an improvement over what I have now.

I'm not finding anything odd about her audit. Maybe if she had gotten representation rather than trying to do it herself..... -
From what I've read, they were applying as educational orgs, which is under 501©(3).

Looking for bookkeeping/accounting software to replace Quiockbooks
joanmcq replied to TAG's topic in General Chat
I use Medlin payroll and Medlin himself will answer questions about the software. He's even on here occasionally. The payroll module is $55/yr. -
Pray tell, how are most of these questions not reasonable to determine if the org is engaged in political activities, which are prohibited for 501©(3) orgs?

Interesting Rob! I am looking to do a simple network once I get the new laptop I just ordered for my assistant. It's nice to know at least one or two users didn't have issues with a network. Both of my computers will be win7, so any o/s issues won't come up at least.

Medlin makes accounting software too. You can download it to try it out. I haven't done so yet, so I can't comment on how it is. -
I got that email too. Delete!

KC, CA requires a supermajority to raise taxes. So until this year, the Dems have not been in full control of all houses & the governorship. Much like the federal House Republicans, the republican minority has been stonewalling any true reform for years. The only was we've gotten tax increases through has been to vote them in through initiatives. Of course the initiative process is another issue unto itself.

The GA buyer would not be paying MA sales tax. She would be paying GA sales tax, the same way as if buying it from a store that had a footprint in GA, but the purchaser chose to buy over the Internet.

The issue is that the local taxes that have been in place for decades are not being collected, and thus the localities are suffering. Amazon is probably sick of being sued, and has had to make concessions in so many states, like CA, that they are now not one of the issues. Collecting simply the state portion of any sales tax is a very doable compromise. Anyone tech savvy enough to do business over the Internet is tech savvy enough to get a program that calculates sales tax. I believe eBay & etsy may even remit for you, and if they don't, should start as a way to get more businesses to use their sites.

I still have to look at a bunch of different software - from the description in the CPA Proadvisor article Ultra Tax seems like it would fit my needs except for the price - but ATX does seem like it would work if I go ahead and get the laptop I'm poised to buy for my assistant to use.

I still love my adding machines. With tapes. I add up checks to make my deposits and attach the tape to my deposit receipt, notated with the client that paid. My memory sucks so I can refer to the tape when adding up stuff for the return just so I can check if I missed something. I did start using the itemized list function in ATX, so I don't add as much, but I still love my tapes.

Well, of course they want the money, as does every state with a sales/use tax. It's money the end consumer is supposed to pay, but usually doesn't.
