  1. The Tax Book says: "The allocation percentage can be any amount between zero and 100% that is agreed upon by each taxpayer. If the taxpayers do not agree on an allocation percentage, then the allocation percentage is equal to the number of enrollees claimed as a personal exemption divided by the total number of individuals enrolled in the qualified health plan." Hope this helps.
  2. After ATX, the first three returns will feel really weird and awkward. then you'll start getting the hang of it and be able to fly through the entry screens. I thought having to go to View mode to see a form would be really annoying - but it loads faster than switching pages in ATX.
  3. And the "Donate" button is up in the top menu, next to "Forums" for those who have not used it before.
  4. Terry - prayers said for you mom and for all your family. SO glad you are done; spend time with your family this weekend. Taxes, in the end, are just an annoying chore.
  5. Grab bars, shower seat, etc. Deductible medical expenses? Not capital items (although the total for several items together went over $500 with installation) and certainly did NOT add to value of house (if anything, it detracted from it). TTB is silent and online articles are hazy.
  6. In the engineering world (a bit crude) they call them "snot strips" and that's what my family uses. Too many engineers, I guess.
  7. Except for my wonderful fellow sufferers here!!!!!
  8. Belt, suspenders, duct tape, and staples. File it. If the agencies get extras/duplicates, I have NO sympathy. They get weekends off, and salaries, benefits, and pensions none of us can even dream of - that WE pay for - so they can bleeping well deal with extra paper forms. I am out of patience with the entire world right about now.
  9. Eric Green - if it's the same one who teaches at the NE IRS Representation conference every November at Foxwoods - is just fabulous. Knows his stuff cold and makes it accessible and useful to the practitioner.
  10. Or skip it - and sleep well. Sufficient unto the day and all that. Either it will be well, or you will have a chance to make it well later. If you can't sleep, have a drink. I think I might put some whiskey in my next cup of tea. I am SO done with this week.
  11. When in danger, or in doubt, run in circles, scream, and shout! Which is my snarky way of saying "I dunno" - but good luck!
  12. @RitaB, just to go on record - we love you SO much!

    Why Now ?

    Sympathy!!!!!
  14. Manila folder cuts are the absolute WORST!! You have my sympathy, and a non-back-40-needing hug, and a virtual band-aid because those cuts always bleed. (Ask me how I know...) Poor @RitaB!
  15. lock the door on the 18th; give existing clients a password for entry....

Tell her to get a weekly pass *and* keep the records - else no dice. FastLane/EZPass (whatever they're calling it this year) sends an annual statement. Or makes it available for download. Not so the T passes. Hike their bill.

Commuter expenses, small deduction on Schedule XY Line 15. However - WEKKLY or MONTHLY passes for MBTA or commuter rail. Not including employer reimbursements. Not load-on-demand Charlie cards. Put in total; amount per taxpayer over $175/year is the deduction and it should subtract that $175 from the total. Hike their bill.
  18. Today, yesterday, and the day before, actually. What is ticking me off about Windows Update lately is that my computer is most definitely set to download and install updates ONLY upon my direct command - yet it is downloading and installing updates WITHOUT my approval. Gotta find the "update" that installed that sleazy step and UNinstall it. In my copious free time...
  19. I am so jealous that I'm not sure I'm speaking to you right now.... Congratulations, my friend!
  20. Oh, and I got a call from an inquirer, too, today. Taking new clients? Only if willing to go on extension. Oh. Was hoping to file on time. Word of advice: anyone competent is ONLY doing extensions for new clients this week. If they say they can file you on time, they are NOT competent. Oh. Huh. Click. (me thinking: good riddance; what a bozo!)
  21. Email from a client today, with questions about the partnership return filed in early March. Wanted to know why figures differed from what they gave me in a couple of places. We went through it all *at the time* - personal estimated tax payments are NOT a deduction to the partnership. Assets are depreciated, NOT expensed (increasing income every year or we might have gone Section 179), etc.... Told them by return email I am NOT answering any questions about already-filed returns until after 4/24. And made a note to hike their fee for next year!
  22. I watched the little video and made four macros to fill out extensions (fed/Mass), PIN screen, and EF screen. Including watching the 2.5 minute video, it took me about 4 minutes total. They are THAT simple. *4868>X>>Y is, (if I recall correctly) the macro for extensions. Goes to screen for 4868, puts an "X" in the 4868 box, two tabs to the "Y/N" box to make it yes. Boom, you're done.
  23. Which do NOT include the loan taken out by the dad and in his name - correct? FBO the son's education, but not the son's loan - just the son's college.
  24. Too late to edit! Supposed to be Massachusetts/Mass. Neither posterior nor donkey was intended!
  25. Sorry for being dense - are you saying that the school loan payments are NOT counted towards total gift given? Or that they are counted? (Except for the one in the dad's name only.)
