  1. Thanks Joan and Marilyn... Now you got me curious. Will fool around with it some more and try to see why it is not flowing the way I expect. Maybe I am missing something. Will let you know later...
  2. Maybe try to discard the 3800 form and then re-add it. The back-and-forth problem you describe sounds like a recursive calculation bug in the spreadsheet (Excel and most other spreadsheets have a bug in this area). Initiating the bug could be caused by a stray entry in the spreadsheet (the 3800 form) somewhere. I agree that the 3500 sb carried forward. You can always override the form cells. In prior years this form had occasional odd problems, but the last couple years it seems to be doing what I expect it to do.
  3. I have never had a problem with rollover depr (knocking on my floor...). After receiving the archive disk each year, I always update last year's program before starting new year returns, and there are usually some changes, at a minimum the new organizer is updated, but sometimes there are program updates also. Don't know if this is related to the issue, but it is consistent with JB's comment.
  4. Happy Birthday Mike ! Thanks for all your expert posts... I have learned lots from you.
  5. Cool ! I forgot about this feature.
  6. Thanks for the update KC... I will remove the override. Have a great weekend!
  7. This happens every year.. I think it is safe to assume the program is just sending the amount to the wrong line on pg 1 of 1040. It's one line below where it should be, and very easy to miss when reviewing the return..... Gotta get back to return prep now, but will check in later if anyone has another idea. Thanks !
  8. I just noticed that if I check the "Inherited IRA" checkbox on the 1099-R, but NOT the "IRA/SEP" checkbox, the distribution does appear as taxable on pg 1 of 1040, but in the wrong line. It appears in the Pensions and Annuities line, not the IRA line. Anyone think this is how it is supposed to appear? I always assumed it should be appearing on the IRA line just above the Pension line.
  9. Hi KC... yeah, it's in there.
  10. One of the nice things about ATX is you can cut and paste an Excel spreadsheet with all the cap gain/loss data directly into the ATX capital gains detail worksheet. Some brokerages allow you (ie client) to download Excel-compatible spreadsheets with all the required info. For clients with lots of 1099-B transactions, this can save lots of time.
  11. No, it's a regular inherited IRA
  12. Every year I fill out an inherited IRA 1099R input screen for a client, mark it as code 4 (death), and mark it as "inherited IRA" in the checkbox. But it never appears as taxable on pg 1 of the 1040. So I just override the line on form 1040. What am I doing wrong?

    Investment Fee

Even if you itemize, I think the investment mgt fees are nondeductible if paid directly out of the tax-deferred account. Client would need to request from the account manager to have the fees paid outside of the investment account. And even then, I don't think there is any way you can legitimize a Sch C deduction for an owner's personal account. If owner had a qualified retirement plan for employees with pooled assets (ie not a SIMPLE), then mgt fees would be deductible on Sch C.
  14. Excellent! I used to be a Chem major, and always suspected this would be discovered. Next I predict that Gullibillium Votermium will be discovered. This will be an element which oddly remains inert until such point in time that expanding Governmentium has usurped more than 50% of the world's Willtoachieve (catalyzing agents which induce creation of replacement morons and peons) . Then the Gullibillium Votermium becomes chemically active, coagulates into revolutionary new crystalline structures, which anarchize Governmentium in a violent reaction, resulting in a new equilibrium where Governmentium becomes a trace mineral, and Willtoachieve is restored to high ambient levels. Could happen.
  15. Anyone is welcome to disagree with OldJack as he is used to it. He has been married over 50 years. Thanks OJ... best line I've heard this week !

    W2C through ATX

Pretty sure you can easily do it in ATX. I did one a couple years ago, and was surprised it was so easy. I think the form is at the bottom of the W-2 input screen. Just follow the instrux for the form.
  17. Still have about 12 1099s showing "transmitted". Last year it seemed like ATX stopped processing them after late January, until about 3rd week of March. I have had about 4 or 5 get accepted, but the rest are sitting in limbo. This is bothersome, but I am not really worried yet.
  18. If you book it as a Sucker, you can just deduct it as Office Supplies.
  19. Anarchrist... Priceless !
  20. Thanks for the comments jainen... Since posting this I was able to locate a Richard Hammar church finance reference book, and he is of the opinion churches can do this, although I have never heard of it actually being done. A church blog I found said some other churches are considering switching to SIMPLE due to the new 403b rules, for the same reasons my church is considering it. As long as we terminate our 403b plan by 12/31/08 and give a 60-day SIMPLE signup notification, it will be OK for 2009. We voted to make the change yesterday.
  21. Just installed in Vista today. It was the fastest easiest ATX install I ever ran. The first problem I noticed running a 2008 1040 was that the form 6251 exemption limits have not been updated. So you need to go into the 6251 worksheet and plug in the exemption levels.
  22. Hi ATXers- As I recall, many of you are involved with church finances. Due to the new 403b plan rules effective 1/1/09, my church is considering terminating our 403b plan by 12/31/08, and replacing it with a SIMPLE IRA effective 1/1/09. I have never heard of a church with a SIMPLE IRA, but my reading suggests there is nothing precluding this. Does anyone know for sure? Is it OK to have a SIMPLE plan at a church? Thanks for any insight.
  23. A bit scary..... the part about "who will now be offered the TaxWise program for the 2009 tax season". Does this mean TaxWise was shut down? If not, sure seems like it will be. The fact that the users were not offered ATX means, I guess, that we ARE on a very short leash. Hope we still have ATX thru this tax season. JohnH seems much smarter to me now! I was too cheap to wait and see, instead taking the discount.
  24. Have a wonderful birthday jainen... I am a constant reader, seldom poster, but I am grateful for your sharing your piercing insights on this board. -Bob
