For the most part, clients pay before I transmit their return or provide them with a copy to mail. Payment can be giving me credit card info over the telephone or paying on the PayPal link on my web site. I do accept all major credit cards. Yes, the fees eat into my profits, but I want to make it as easy as possible for clients to pay me. I had a PayPal account anyway to pay for certain things, so I put a link on my web site for clients to pay me (they can use check or credit card if they have a PayPal account; but even without an account, clients can pay me via credit card using that link and don't have to disclose their number to me or leave it on a voice mail or email.)

I think that was what KC was telling you, that even if no return has been filed yet, the W-2s still exist in the taxpayer's income transcript since the employer already filed those.

An S-Corp dropped it's QB file through my mail slot today. Several clients have emailed that they will finally get me their information after labor day. I leave about 26 September for my son's October wedding (we volunteered to do the airport runs before and after the big day.) And, I haven't done my own return yet. Oh yeah, and several people want their ES recomputed before 15 September. Have the bride's family staying here next weekend while her matron of honor gives her a shower (wanted it in their old home town). And, my stepdaughter called today to set a day to go shopping for OUR dresses for the wedding and rehearsal and breakfast and other festivities...and shoes!

And, I'm trying to work but just returned from husband's family reunion so catching up on laundry and mail and stuff. Am reading all the posts, though, to catch up from the last week away from home office.

There's no tax savings due to hardship; it's just a method to qualify to withdraw while still an employee. The employee must qualify for his employer's definition of hardship to make a withdrawal, so it's between them. Why doesn't he borrow instead of withdraw? Then, he won't have to fit within his employer's definition of hardship and can pay himself back over time.

Anyone else being blocked from The Tax Book site by Norton? I can tell it to ignore, and it lets me on to a home page that's arranged a bit differently than usual -- with no spot to click to take me to the message board. Does anyone know how to access their message board?

He just needs to be disabled before the distribution. The distribution can be for his living expenses, whether or not specific to his disability. As Joan brought up, qualifying as totally and permanently disabled in the eyes of the IRS takes some documentation.
