  1. Past hour
  2. I hope there is a prompt reply to this. We just signed a contract and will be moving (if it's accepted) in July. I have always had a home office for 25+ years but now will be a different home. I'm wondering now actually if I should just retire. The thought of new letterhead, cards, whatever is frightening. I wonder if my clients would mind old letterhead on the engagement letter. How much can I do without? This would also be the death knell of my fax line. Many changes ahead for us, Taxit!
  3. I am in the process of downsizing/retiring. I put my office on the market and moved everything to my home. I need to update the change of address and phone number for My EFIN. It says to long into e-services. When I do that I do not see anywhere to update these items. Has anyone completed this task and can offer a tip?
  4. On the other hand, these rules strongly suggest that if I prepare any tax returns for residents of Nevada or Washington (states with no income tax) then that income would not be Oregon Income or subject to Oregon Tax. Hmm
  5. Today
  6. However, depending on where your client resided your income could be subject to Self Employment Tax from a Transit District or a City. Over $400 of Self Employment Income related to a client living in Eugene would require the filing of a Lane Transit District SE Tax Return and the filing of a City of Eugene SE Tax Return.
  7. The same, and so many of them are being questioned. This was not the case throughout most of the tax season. Some of the questions don't make any sense.
  8. Are you experiencing slower than expected refunds? For years, after electronic filing and acknowledgements, refunds would typically come through in about 10 days. My own refund took about a month. And I'm getting calls from clients who somehow think I can speed up their refund. Am I the only one? or are you experiencing the same.
  9. This might not be as bad as it sounds. The income threshold to file a return for OR nonresidents is about $2,700 single and $5.500 MFJ. That one OR client who pays you $500 is not going to trigger your filing in OR. Or is there some other rule governing tax preparers? EAs don't have to worry about it at all since those who reside in other states can't prepare OR returns anyway. So if you're a CPA preparing an OR return, be sure to keep your price at $5,495.
  10. Sorry, I didn't mean the forum shouldn't discuss it. I meant that "I" personally don't because it will change. I heard that the main objections were to the amount it would increase the deficit and debt, the SALT limitation, and by implication, probably the overall limitation on itemized deductions. Like I said, it didn't make it to the House floor, and Republican senators were already voicing strong objections, so that we know that the Senate would not pass it it's current form there either.
  11. Yesterday
  12. Whatever... Just go ahead and delete it then.
  13. This didn't even make it out of committee in the House and why I've always had a policy of not discussing any legislation until it passes.
  14. My understanding is that it would be based on where the client is residing at the time the return was prepared.
  15. Do you know if a final PY return for a taxpayer that moved from OR be considered a "resident" return for this purpose?
  16. Not a surprise. But based on your earlier email they are not going to have out of state EA preparers anyways because they don't recognize our licensure. I don't have any OR clients, and I guess I never will. I will send anyone who asks to you Lee. Tom Longview, TX
  17. Oregon has now adopted rules similar to California. The preparation of Oregon Tax Returns for residents or a business residing or located in Oregon by preparers located outside of Oregon is considered to be Oregon Income subject to Oregon Tax.
  18. Thanks for all of the replies. I also got a suggestion from another local tax preparer who has used the free version of MordPass for several years and is well pleased so I am going to give it a try.
  19. Yes I have had to do that on M-2 from time to time
  20. Thank you, was able to listen to all the prompts and advise the TP how to get through. TP was able to get through and received a call back within 30 minutes. The system even assigned someone from the first time he entered his SS number a few weeks ago. System works as expected but you have to listen to the prompts or get caught in a loop. Thanks
  21. You might need to make an entry on the sub-schedule for the line in question (either negative or positive), to force it to reconcile. I haven't used ATX since 2012, but have seen situations in ATX (and now Drake) where I had to fix something using that approach. I think it's ok as long as a supporting schedule is generated and the wording explains the entry. Disclosure and all that stuff...
  22. So glad to see this thread! I've been an EA since 2006. I received letter 5507 yesterday dated 4/14/25 saying I was set to inactive because they didn't receive my Form 8554. I filed and paid 1/28/25 and have all my confirmations. Currently on hold and considering emailing if I keep getting hung up on...
  23. Same goes for other types of heavy equipment. I had a client who sold a dump truck that was over 30 years old for something over $30k. I actually called him to verify. The truck had been overhauled over the years and had a relatively new bed. But even if the rebuilds had been added to basis instead of bonused or expensed, basis is usually low on these older pieces and depreciation recapture yields high cap gains.
  24. Last week
  25. Hubby uses Dashlane and loves it. I've never gotten into it. Still very old school with a book on my bookshelf, a generic-looking file on my desktop computer, and a few cryptic reminders on a post-it note on my desk for software/app passwords that have to change every 30/60/90 days.
  26. Maybe try the practitioner priority line.
  27. I use an ancient version of 1Passwrod that is still 100% local (on my machine). I know others who use the cloud-based version and like it. It's very easy to use, but I wish they still offered a local-only version.
  28. TP mistakenly paid his state taxes to the IRS as well as paying what he owed to the IRS for tax year 2023. State notified him that he did not pay his taxes, that is when he realized what happened. The IRS never sent his overpayment back nor applied it to 2024. When you run his transcript, you can see the overpayment is there. His online account does not show the overpayment as he owed taxes that year. He has tried several times calling 800-829-1040 with no success. The phone tree will not get us to a live agent. Any ideas how he can reach a person or a different number to call?
  29. So, it took 2hrs and 53 minutes, but I actually got a live body! She couldn't tell me why the letter went out but did confirm I'm active until 3/31/2028. A valuable lesson learned (thanks Lee that I truly didn't know I was supposed to renew by January 31. I probably should have failed the exam way back when It's irrelevant now. I can't say when I'm getting out, but it will definitely be before 2028 so this will be my last renewal debacle. As always, I sincerely appreciate everyone's input.
