  1. 98% of Tax preparers have not idea what you are saying to do, much less how to deal with an issue that crops up. I, same as Abby, have no desire to play computer "Sherlock Holmes" to see if I can make it work by partitioning the Hard drive as you describe. I have a bigger issue at hand. The ATX program, since 2012 takes up MASSIVE amounts of HD space. Either on a server or a stand alone. Suddenly, my 500GB Hard drive is full and 80% us taken up with ATX files.. If you think I am going to try partitioning etc., you are sadly mistaken. I will NOT consider WIN10 till at least Dec. 31, 2018. I have advised many people to follow the same path. Those that did not take my advice are very distraught at the outcome of upgrading to WIN10. A word to the wise is sufficient.

  2. Because I'm too busy working to play around with my computers all day long.

  3. I would support both a Reference forum and an ATX User Tips forum, for ease of finding both. Earlier this year, I switched to viewing unread topics and comments as my primary view.

  4. Do you envision something of a "Reference" forum? In that case, they wouldn't need pinning if they were all reference-type topics that were mostly static anyway.

  5. I have both programs on my jump drive, spreading them far and wide.

  6. Moderator!. Might this be a topic worth pinning - to have the info needed for each state for retrieving the state withholding tax amounts? Over the years, I have had to do this with nearly every state DOR for this information. CA may be the easiest as it can be done with a phone call. One stumbling block is the clients address on file with the FTB. Some people move around a lot and having the older W-2's and IRS W&I or Account statements will help. I have had to provide 6 or more addresses until the right one was hit. Perhaps once or twice, the client had to call to provide the address. Another twist in their system is that depending on the age of the year in question and also the amount assessed it could be in a different section. Start with 916-845-7044, and they will give you the other number if necessary. When filing a CA return without a W-2, they will tell you to use their Substitute W-2 form. However, using the IRS form 4852 attached to the state return works as I have never had one rejected. NY requires a form submitted for each year, but they will return the info quickly. There are at least another half dozen state that will provide the info. The ones that I seem to remember are MN, OR, HI, LA, MD, ME, VA, although there are surely more. One state, UT, requires verification (W-2), but will not provide any info, so client has to go back to employer. The rest usually accept any reasonable estimate on the return. (I always make sure that there is no state refund.)

  7. I just had a similar situation and decided to use the Shared Responsibility worksheet. I marked the child as covered each month and the parent had coverage just the last two months. I input the child's (college student) income which increased household income about 50%. The calculated amount was just $443. I may have misinterpreted the 1095-C from mother's first 10 months but, like you, spent way too much time on this. The code was 1F, minimum essential coverage NOT providing minimum value offered to employee (this was for 3 months then she was unemployed, then employed again elsewhere). If this is incorrect, I will amend for her for free but we are also awaiting details on 1098-T (another gawd awful form). This showed $4100 billed qualified tuition, scholarship of $2400, loans of $5600 and 'refunds back to you' of $5735. They have no clue what the 'refund' is about and claim receipt of nothing. Sigh...
