  1. I called at the beginning of January wanting to get some new e-file window stickers, because mine are fading. Much to my dismay, I was told that all of the e-file marketing supplies had been discontinued. I told the rep "what a shame, I really like some of the items". I do have 8 sheets of the e-file labels that I will sell to the highest bidder. LOL Seriously, I can send them to the first to get me an address. Debbie
  2. As I recall, you can amend from MFS to MFJ but not from MFJ to MFS (after the due date of a return.)
  3. At two different tax conferences last year, the IDOR representative stated that the INPNR is available to efile although not required to be efiled. The IDOR rep stated to check with your tax software company as to whether they will provide that option.
  4. I had one couple whose return could not be efiled because of the FTHB payback. Now, I am getting called by another lady, who had the payback, wondering "wheres the money?"! Last Saturday, when I checked the status of her refund, the irs was saying "there is a delay in processing and you should receive your refund by March 8th." She called last night (hey genius it's not the 8th yet!), and said "where's my money?"! The new IRS status said "there is a delay in processing your tax return. For more information, please continue. If you have questions or need additional information, please have the following on hand when you call:....... Please mention reference number 1481....." Just checked the status of another client with the payback and his is also delayed, with reference number 1301.
  5. I went to a seminar many years ago and received a handy handout about SS Cards and determining the last name of taxpayer to use in Tax Prep software. Try this First Name field - ROSA Last name field - RODRIGUEZ DE MARTINEZ
  6. Lucho, This might apply to your question. From the TaxBook (p 12-2): Who cannot claim the credit. No credit is allowed if: - the taxpayer or spouse was a nonresident alien for any part of the year who did not elect to be treated as a resident alien for tax purposes.
  7. Form 8379 can be efiled. It works in my software. From instruction for Form 8379 - "Time Needed To Process Form 8379 Generally, if you file Form 8379 with a joint return on paper, the time needed to process it is about 14 weeks (11 weeks if filed electronically). If you file Form 8379 by itself after a joint return has been processed, the time needed is about 8 weeks."
  8. Wow! Thanks for all the great responses! Cathy, don't feel bad about your "seasoning". I lost my office old-timer (who had been doing taxes for 50 yrs) about 5 years ago. I miss him telling me about the history of tax changes. I always find it interesting. After being in the tax prep biz for about 13 yrs, I catch myself educating clients about the short term history of a credit or deduction!
  9. Scenario: A single taxpayer loses her job. She rolls over her 401K into an IRA. A month later she withdraws all funds and uses a portion of it to purchase a home (first-time). Could the portion ($10,000) used for the home purchase be excepted from the 10% penalty? I am having a hard time with this as the funds were originally from a 401k, which does not allow an exception. THANKS for all input!
  10. Thanks to all for the BDay wishes!
  11. If I had prepared a joint return for them in the past, I would offer to make a copy of the return (for a fee), and she could do what ever she wanted to do with the information on that return.
  12. you are correct - credit does not apply to new construction!
  13. there is not any income to include on line 21 until the debt has been cancelled (1099-C). With a 1099-a you just report the sale and advise the client that a 1099-c might come in another tax year. I think the financial institution has 3 yrs to make that cancellation of debt determination.
