  1. If it is for the primary residence, you don't have to prove insolvency. You just enter that amount and select primary residence. I think you will have to go down on the page and mention that you will reduce the basis. Yes, you just send 982 with the amount entered.
  2. Form 1040 and any schedules and forms (not electronic authorization forms such as 8879) 8867 and state forms I don't give my SID or ERO's PIN. Only about 2 people ask me to sign their copies and I efile everything. When paper forms are submitted, I sign only the forms to be mailed to IRS or States, not the client's copy. Predicting the future, I think the IRS will allow us to have one signature only for TAX forms and another to sign checks and apply for credit cards.
  3. Maybe I should change the title since it only took me 30 seconds using pay pal.
  4. I agree with the PM. Rita will give you hugs.
  5. It seems that the "atx server" service didn't start correctly. What did tech support say?
  6. JohnH.... either I am too old OR my computer is too new, but I never have an issue with ATX's speed or performance. Of course since computer support is my b&b, I have a lot of patience with computers and they tend to get along with me. I agree that we are data entry clerk for the IRS but someone has to do the dirty work.
  7. I prepare returns on weekends and at the end of the day. That's why it is easy for me to give their papers back even when I have finished the final return because this is a part time job. The job that pays my rent is my regular IT job. I would like to retire early, very early and do taxes from Jan 31 to April 18 and then go to my country and then come back on Jan 28th to purchase the software and to get ready for my 2.7 month year and so and so. With technology, anything is possible. My clients barely get letters from the IRS or states.
  8. Thank you. I am sure Eric will appreciate it.
  9. I hope someone else answers but I have a "not elegant" work around. Put wife first on the return and check mark W-2s, Sch C and Sch SE accordingly.
  10. Do you have 5 minutes... your help is needed? Maybe I should say "Do you have 5 minutes, your appreciation is needed?" We might have different software and for moments we could argue which software package is better. We could also argue about who knows more about certain areas of tax preparation but there is one point that no one argues... THE VALUE OF THIS FORUM!!!!!!!!!!!!! So, please donate something today so that this site stays power up!!! Share with us if were able to donate or if you have technical difficulties. THANK YOU.
  11. I have never called ATX support except for that email I sent and it was answered in 2 hours. Maybe the "long list of credentials" help so I don't have to call ATX to begin with.
  12. I am having the same issue. Page one has 1600 Rockville and I cannot change that, even if I change the address to another city. Then I answer the question where people lived on Dec 31 and I enter 122222 Living Street Silver Spring MD 20902 Have you solve your issue? If you reported it to ATX, see if you also have a different city in the box "Physical address as of December 31, 2016...?
  13. Do you have any Silver Spring returns rejected? That code didn't change.
  14. Cool. Sometimes income earned in the US is part of World Wide Income.
  15. Too bad you left. Ever since that time, ATX has been an excellent program. I never had issue but I guess having these certifications helps: A+ N+ MCP MCP + I MSCE and EA.
  16. I think you are confusing the terms. NO ADOPTION is involved in your case. You are filing a joint return and that child is the daughter or son of one of the filers. This is a letter I sent a while ago. You MUST send that letter: Pacun Johnson AND Wendy ROMERO 1600 Penn Ave NW Washington, DC 20000 INTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE Dear Sir or Madam: My wife came to the United States on December 14, 2016 and we got married on December 22, 2016. We have decided to file our taxes as residents and have included our world wide income. My wife didn’t work in her country but she is filing schedule C for the income she made while in the United States. I was here all year in the U.S. Sincerely, __________________ _______________________ Pacun Johnson Wendy ROMERO SS#222-33-4455 (Applying for ITIN)
  17. It seems that all money was spent on care so no taxes. But I am just bumping your question up so others can answer it.
  18. I am sorry to hear that but it is not our fault, so please don't scream at us. I had a similar issue. A return was hung at ATX and I sent an email and went back to work. A couple of hours later, my email was answered and it was suggested to create the efile file when I receive the return back.
  19. Use code C for the months prior to green card and pay the penalty for the other months.
  20. Maybe the student is paying a previous year debt and in 2016 everything was paid with scholarships. I would reconstruct 2015's 1098s-T or 1098-Ts to see if any money was paid in advance and maybe you can use those amounts.
  21. This is what I would do. 1.- Apply for an ITIN for the daughter. 2.- You must send a letter to the IRS with form 1040 stating that they got married one week after 12-16-2016 (maybe the marriage certificate has the date of marriage) and that his wife want to be treated as a resident for tax purpose and they are filing jointly reporting world wide income. 3.- Since the mother is a resident claiming her child, the child doesn't have to live with the new father... NO EIC OR CTC or any other credits just the personal exemption. 4.- For ACA use option C for the whole year. IT IS always good to know how much people made because if they made only $20K, why will you include the child?
  22. File jointly if they want and include World wide income. How is the software checking her social security number??? DC is easy but if they lived the whole year in DC, they can file "married filing separate on the same return" and they can split incomes and they will get a $300 break (or less). For Maryland file from 505 to collect the taxes withheld (DC MD and VA have an agreement that you pay taxes only where you live regardless where you worked). Give the amounts and I will calculate DC and MD and give you the final amounts tomorrow when I am in front of my friend ATX. We will help you with the states and the federal will be a regular 1040 Married Filing Jointly.
  23. 1.- Scammers are not efiling either. 2.- People have not received their Obamacare papers and their refunds were put on hold last year so they are taking their time collecting all the info. 3.- Tax preparers started their season late. 4.- People were told that their refunds were going to be hold until Feb 15th.
  24. Shut down your computer for 30 seconds, then test your internet connectivity and try again. BETTER YET, go home to rest and try tomorrow. It doesn't make any difference if you transmit today or tomorrow, provided you don't offer RALS, which I hate.
