  1. Client's son manages all mother's affairs as she is in Alzheimer's unit care. Father died December 2014 and surviving spouse is receiving annuity payments, teacher's retirement benefits, SS death benefits and IRA distributions but son has not received any reporting documents for 2015. Mother's medical expenses with negate any federal taxable income but perhaps not state. Any ideas on how to get a copy of what has been reported to date to IRS? I've gotten transcripts after filing but not beforehand. I have advised son to contact all agencies to get these 1099's but wonder if it is possible to see what has already been reported. Thanks!
  2. My client with the same employer shows that Box 14 K is Pretax Vision and Dental Deduction and V is Pretax FEHB Incentive. Don't you have the list of codes with the W-2?
  3. Thanks, Mike, for chiming in. She, in all likelihood, did have to get approval to go on this trip and her note said that she was invited to go. Yes, on Sch. C alone, it is a loss of $3300 and she does not and apparently never has had other outside income. This would be the first Sch. C in 3 years anyway. I opted for #3 and it seemed to work out with the clergy sheets and SE tax. I thought it too odd to just have $1500 income only on Sch. C (especially when it was directly related to trip support) and to have a loss of $3300 when it was employee related. Thanks to all for input! I think so long as the bottom line is correct, it is an arguable fair treatment.
  4. That happens occasionally to me but usually later in the day. So I close and reopen the program. I think too much stuff hangs around and it needs to clear out and begin fresh. Might work for you.
  5. Thanks, Rita. I hadn't thought of including then backing out to match with continuing ed expense as unreimbursed expense. Oddly, this is the only clergy client I've had (of maybe 6) that has NOT had outside income to put on Schedule C. Others have performed weddings and funerals or done workshops not in their home church or as the home church employee. I have to say that one thing about our line of work is that the combinations of circumstances amongst our clients are infinitely variable and there is "always somethin' " new coming through the door! Boring? Never!
  6. Ah, but they are self-employed for FICA purposes. There can well be a combination of unreimbursed expenses that are on 2106 and self employment income when they are paid separately for performing various services or receive other income not from the employing church. I would be happy to have this all on 2106 as there is no offsetting income from other services but cannot figure out how (or even if I need) to connect the 1099MISC to the 2106. As the money was intended to mitigate the full expense of the trip, it doesn't seem quite fair to have it fully subject to SE tax while the full expense of the trip is subject to the 2% limitation. I suppose I could code it as not subject to SE tax but that doesn't seem exactly correct either.
  7. I've had several clergy clients over the years and managed well with Church and Clergy Tax Guide, among other resources. This one has a weird circumstance puzzling me a bit. All other clergy clients have had outside income from weddings, funerals, etc. and corresponding expenses so that a Sch. C was needed. This one has no such income but does have unreimbursed employee expenses. In 2015 she went on a trip to Italy with the bishop. The total cost was about $4800. The conference provided $1500 of the expense then issued Form 1099MISC. This is continuing education/professional development but it seems as much unreimbursed (in total) employee business expense as self employment. But the clergy worksheets don't seem to have a place to include offsetting income and link with the 1099MISC which, technically, was not from her employer. So Schedule C and be done with it or other ideas? If Schedule C, would the other unreimbursed expenses go there instead of clergy worksheets? And why now - why me? (Not to mention 4 foster kids and accompanying complications)
  8. I charge by time so opening envelopes, while painful at times, is income producing and gives me a little overview. I do not, however, replace documents inside them. I'm not that nice... probably why I don't get goodies.
  9. Hey, I, too, was a 4/11. Long time, great company!
  10. I'm not a gun person but this is very close to how I felt recently. The computer guy finally showed up to reconnect everything and I rearranged some stuff. Still jamming. So I thought it just might be the paper and I now think that was a major part of the problem. Curses, and I just bought a whole box but at least I still have a few reams of the other, obviously better, stuff. So maybe my apologies to the printer...fed the poor thing bad stuff.
  11. Congratulations! See, there is more to life than taxes. Sell, retire and enjoy other pursuits that make you happy and at which you clearly are talented.
  12. That is amazing! We've been colleagues - and friends - for so long and many of us go back to 1997-98 with Saber and William and barbecue and many fond memories. Well, a few grumbles along the way but how wonderful we've been there all this time to support and cheer each other, celebrate and mourn, smile and cry, gripe and groan and know that every day others are out there/here who truly understand and only want to help. Celebrate and share the love, indeed!
  13. If the client has chosen direct debit for a balance due, a daytime phone number, 10 digits, is required. Several of my clients prefer this and then there are those who only want a paper check refund and paper check payment due.
  14. Well, I checked the teeth and cleaned the rollers but still no improvement. Although the teeth looked okay, I honestly couldn't tell, not being a gear teeth person. I just have to get the other MFC laser hooked up. Unfortunately it does not print double sided. Less than 2 weeks YIPPEE!
  15. Aha! Bad teeth might be my culprit, too. I shall investigate this. How did you find this out on yours, ILLMAS?
  16. Thanks, Pacun, but I am using the same paper I've been using for the last couple of years. And there is only one paper tray so not as if there were options for the little bugger. I will clean the rollers and hope for the best. Just, why now? Late last year and earlier this year when printing engagement letters and lots of other stuff, no problems. Just now that I have to print tax returns (those that aren't pdf copies) and invoices, etc. BAM, issues.
  17. Nothing here, either, but lots of hugs. My usual chocolate chip cookie provider is on extension due to husband's illness so maybe later. Sniff, sniff...
  18. It just occurred to me that, while the paper initially doesn't go through, the printer works fine when I press the button. If the rollers were so bad, how does the paper get through when I press the button? Pondering the mysteries of myriad tax season obstacles....
  19. Thanks for the tip! I have only one tray and I think I know where the rollers are located. They appear to be in the front to push the paper not in back where I expected them. But I don't see rollers for the envelopes so wonder how they get through. Some investigation is warranted and soon! I am weary of pressing that button over and over....
  20. Whew! I was almost having panic attacks. I didn't realize how very often I check this as it is my home page. It's different when we have a heads up for maintenance and are prepared. Thanks to those who began the FB page so I knew we were not alone. And thanks again, ever so much, Eric, for providing this space for us. Maybe a little bit for you, too...True thanks!
  21. I could think of lots of pubs to go to about now
  22. THAT's just what I need!
  23. For me, making myself use the 10 key with my left hand in initial accounting classes so that I wouldn't have to constantly put down my writing implement was among the better skills I learned. Then a few years ago to relieve achy neck and shoulder on the right side I trained my left to do the mouse work. Instant relief as stress is more balanced.
  24. and not only do they walk among us but they breed!!!!
  25. Way too many people live above their means succumbing to the constant barrage of advertising and envy of what others have (whether or not actually paid for). We've known for some time that we have lived quite a bit below putting as much into retirement as possible. As my husband is retiring the end of June, it was gratifying to hear the advisor remark that we must have been living below our means for years as it appears we are covered for 30+ years. My son was likely relieved when I told him that while he may end up choosing our nursing home, at least he won't have to pay for it.
