  1. I have clients in Australia so do this every year. The first year I did extend with their agreement but I believe you can also put in the anticipated date to meet the physical presence and file. If it doesn't happen, amend then. Input the dates and see if it flies.
  2. Elrod, what would our days be without your valuable input? And to think you nearly said buh bye to us - so glad you hung around. Love you!
  3. Maybe a good idea but the primary is the low income with no tax liability so 100% would be refunded. That may be a simpler solution so I will suggest it. At least the first SSN would match, wouldn't it? Thanks for the suggestion!
  4. This is all rather amicable and I haven't experienced or seen any issues. My question is how to make sure that their decision is recognized by IRS. I've dealt with couples filing separately when beneficial but having made joint estimated payments prior and attached a letter on a mailed return as to the split. My question is whether the IRS computers will recognize that all the overpayment from a joint return is applied on one SSN now. Although paid from a joint account, the lower income person isn't arguing or contesting that the estimated tax paid in and overpayment were from and for the higher income person.
  5. Couple had substantial overpayment applied to 2016 federal return but divorced mid-year. How to split or apply for 2016? In MFJ vs MFS, one partner had no tax liability so it really should go to the high taxable income partner, imo, but how to do that? New things for me this year after 20+! It's always sumthin...
  6. One year Pi day was on a Thursday and our pastor at the time, in appreciation for our choir, brought several pies to rehearsal and made a wonderful poster of thanks. Best Pi day ever! We did have to wait until after rehearsal to eat, though. Tough to sing with food mouth (singers know what I mean).
  7. Hah, Rita, I'll bet you have grilled salmon, fresh asparagus, chocolate mousse and some nice wine in there as opposed to my meager bowl of oatmeal. Well, I do put chia and flax seeds in it and blueberries with the almond milk and cinnamon but I have to fix it every day.
  8. Okay then, pounding it through my head Even though this child was a fully functioning adult without disability for some decades, she is still the mother's child so qualifies but now it isn't the income test question, but the support question. Got it and thanks! Some days are just harder than others....
  9. Thanks, Lion. I'm not asking about the age. She may be considered a child but wasn't deemed disabled until in her 40's so I think relative or child works. It's the support test. I'm asking whether the $8500 on Form SSA-1099 counts towards the income test of $4050 for relative or does she revert to being a child after becoming disabled as an adult?. For 2016, it probably doesn't matter except that the cd income is reported at $5600 but, with a loss carry forward of $3000+, it isn't taxable nor is the Social Security. I'm asking about the definitions of Gross Income for the income test. I haven't found the answer to these two income sources.
  10. This is not a child; the daughter is 57. I'm just not sure because the SSA-1099 looks like any other. In any event, the mother does provide more than 50% of the adult daughter's support but the adult daughter has gross income of $8500 SSA and $5600 cd's matured.
  11. New clients, mother 78 and daughter 57, want to have daughter as dependent. Daughter has been on Social Security disability for several years but it is much more than the $4050 income to qualify for dependent relative. Or does it not count at all as income? If it doesn't count, would any other income count? Daughter cashed in CD's for $5600 but basis was $5600 and she has LCF exceeding $3000 so no taxable income. My reading says gross income so it seems she doesn't qualify, right? But what if there was only the SS? Her SSA-1099 looks like all others but I just know she has disability and is not near full retirement age. Just never had this before in all my years. Lucky, I guess!
  12. Family Medical Leave Act. Are you involved with Human Resources somehow?
  13. It's so hard to lose a family member of any sort and at any time. Like others, I've been there too many times but still wouldn't trade the joy shared in their all too brief lives. My condolences.

  15. Guess I am 'old school' but it seems to me that the home is the place to learn basic cooking skills and the other things you list here. Schools and teachers are charged with an overwhelming range of tasks to teach already. I had Home Economics way back when for a few weeks but already knew much more than taught in that class. Parents and other adults around maybe could assume 'Life Skills" teaching. I could understand maybe an elective in high school but a short time but these things I learned at home. Yes, back in the 50's and 60's with non-college educated parents who both worked full time.
  16. Thanks, Catherine. Seems like a good plan. Your plan should be to go home, be good to yourself and start fresh tomorrow, even later today if the headache is gone. I begin a crown process March 21, day after my birthday. I intend to be very good to me that day.
  17. Time for hugs, anyone?
  18. Client accidentally contributed $26 more into her SEP than allowed. When discovered, quickly, excess was repaid plus 9 cents interest. It isn't reported on 5329 but I think a 6% excise tax is due - all of $1.56 - but that entails Form 5330 but not in the 1040 series. Forget about this? My research seems to say that Fidelity (in this case) should issue a Form 1099R but I doubt that will happen for $26. Ideas? The $26 is 7% of the contribution allowed. Geez, I hate these small issues that eat up so much time.
  19. Great and profound thoughts. I needed this for the partnership returns I'm doing now. In my opinion, they are more challenging that the 1120 S returns I've done in the past. No more Ms. Nice Woman! Charge what I'm worth. Client doesn't like, client goes elsewhere.
  20. Yeah, but some of us die hard runners just can't help ourselves. As I am self employed in my home office, I really appreciate that I can just go run in the middle of the day if I choose and I can do my long runs (up to 17 miles this week) Saturday morning and be done with it. I've run 6 or 7 spring marathons during tax season and prefer it over training in the summer heat. I do dive trips in the fall. I agree it's exhausting but, for me, a nice release and I 'have' to get out for some movement and fresh air and a bit of sanity appreciating nature. JB, where are you running? Try the Cincinnati Flying Pig if you haven't done it yet. Great race!
  21. Ah, trusts. I have 6 and this authorization - arg! At least I am the trustee and use my EIN but what a pain! And how I have to remove the / between dates. See other post about tech support.
  22. Knocking wood here, too, as i have had incredibly few issues since 1998 use. Right now I admit I am 2 hours into working on a puzzling error for the name on 6 trusts. I get an error message that I entered a value of "trust name" on the sheet "Return Info" duh! which I actually did not enter. It has rolled over from last year and the year before that. Moved up to the third level and waiting. There are options to shorten and make the error disappear but, silly me, I want to know the reason why it worked before, doesn't work now. Okay, 2 hours 40 minutes later and cut off twice, the solution is to remove the slashes in the date, i.e., 05/11/2004 doesn't work this year must use 05112004. Good to know and I hope it's the only call this season. I've averaged about one every 3 years so am okay with that.
  23. Or just sit quietly and bill the time and let the abuser know you are billing time. Let them determine how valuable that phone call or text is. At your hourly rate, they might be tempted to turn it off or you might just make more money billing time.
  24. We want you to know how very much we appreciate YOU and how valuable a resource you and this forum are to us. Hopefully the notices helped you tolerate better the miserable commute you had. You make ours so much nicer.
  25. Did last month already when that last upgrade was put in.
