  1. The IRS will hold the taxpayer responsible. Take the RMD ASAP. I agree with Lynn on procedure. IRS is busy chasing non-conforming paid tax preparers by checking PTINs and 8879s.
  2. Income derived from the operation of her business is business income and subject to SE.
  3. Way too much overthinking here. A person cannot get a PLUS unless he/she has a student in post secondary education. A person cannot get a Stafford (subsidized or un-subsidized), Perkins or private student loan unless they are a student in post secondary education. Whomever's name is on the note can claim the student loan interest unless phased out for other reasons.
  4. Until December 31, 2050 unless extended.
  5. Agree. Mid tax year last year, upgraded to Quad Core, Highest possible processor speed, 1 GB hard drive, maximum availible RAM and it cut the processing time of the computer doing tax returns by 75%. Very Very beneficial investment. BTW, the old computer was only 36 months old. Invest in a computer with the fastest processor, largest amount of RAM, and a HUGE SATA hard drive. The time you save will pay for the computer in as little as two weeks. Suck it up and grab the learning curve. It will increase your efficiency and productivity.
  6. There is no credit for paying child support. Never has been. Unless another preparer is dishonest (perish the thought!!) there is no place for it on the tax return. The clients are confused by information from non-reliable, non-tax professional on non-IRS sources. It is a fact of life for a large percentage of the public. It is definitely starting out as a wild year!!
  7. This is a Windows Operating System characteristic. If the program does not respond as quiclky as the operating system thinks it should, it shows the message. The ATX program does so many things in the background before actually sending info to the screen that the operating system gets impatient and complains via the "not responding" message. The larger the return involved, the longer the delay and the more often the "not responding" message. Also, the more returns in the program, the longer the delay as well. If the "not responding" message remains for a very long time, (you know what an average amount of time is) then there may be a problem.
  8. Spoken advice, direction or tax information from any IRS personell has no value. Only the regs count.
  9. It will only work if you have a merchant account that will allow access.
  10. Am I the only Ohio preparer who knows about this or is concerned??
  11. Margaret, The deduction is supposed to lower AGI due to it being classified as self-employed health insurance. Flowing to Sched SE lowers the SE tax in additon, where before, self-employed health insurance did NOT lower SE calculated on business profit. Your software is doing it correctly.
  12. The Pub is inacurate due to being printed before the laws were passed.
  13. I was told by Karen Fiske, E-File administrator and head honche for Ohio, that there would be and are separate acknowledgments for the School District returns for 2010. Has anyone been able to access them or know where to find them? I have several returns with Accepted from Ohio, but cannot find any source of the School District acks. I was also told by Karen, that part year and non-resident School District returns can also be e-filed correctly this year, but only one per return. Has anyone filed such returns? I don't want to call customer no-service for this, and I can't access the online tech chat. I am appealing to all the wise and experienced folks on here for information. Any information will be glady accepted.
  14. Whoever said divorce decrees were fair?
  15. No income from spouse, no child care credit. If she has no income, why do they need child care?
  16. I was on the phone with tech support 1 hour and 45 minutes to fix this problem. Had to do a complete dowload of all updates after cleaning several hundred files from the Not-Processed folder. Long and time consuming. If you are not comfortable with working in the files and folders of the program, call tech support, INSIST on a level 3 technician for program technical problems (this will take 10-15 minutes for the person who answers to get permission to do) then explain your problem. 5 minutes after getting a REAL technician on the line, he located the problem. The rest of the time was waiting for the MASSIVE amount of updated files to be downloaded and installed again. ATX is good software. CCH management has their head up their... .... .... clouds when it comes to customer service. I gave the tech 5 stars. CCH management and their customer non-service get -3 stars.
  17. Agree with Joan. If you go outside the normal pathways, the issue gets real messy. Your client will receive their refund, then in about 6 months, the IRS will send a letter to both parties. When the letter is received, send documentation (which the letter will ask for) and the IRS will decide. Leave any divorce decree or court order out of the mix. Send documentation of her right to claim the children based on the tests given by the IRS. I've played this game dozens of times in the past few years.
  18. The "Draft" watermark does not prevent e-filing.
  19. We need a vaccine for clueless.
  20. In Return Manager, click on "Preferences" Then click on "E-File Manager" Then click the circle beside "Always hold and release" This will cause the "state only" e-files to always be created in the "Held" status until.... 1) You receive an "Accepted" ack for the Federal return. The State e-file will be changed to "Created" automatically. 2) You manually change the "Held" status to "Created" This will only apply to returns created or rolled over AFTER the change in the preferences is made. The above settings will not affect any e-files transmitted as "Piggyback"
  21. Business Forms Affected By the Extender Provisions Taxpayers will need to wait to file if they are impacted by any of the tax credits or deductions that expired at the end of 2009 and were renewed by the Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization, and Job Creation Act of 2010 enacted December 17. The delays impact taxpayers claiming: Form 1120-PC, U.S. Property and Casualty Insurance Company Income Tax ReturnForm 941 (First Quarter 2011), Employer's Quarterly Federal Tax ReturnForm 709, U.S. Gift Tax ReturnForm 706, United States Estate (and Generation-Skipping Transfer) Tax ReturnForm 706-NA, United States Estate (and Generation-Skipping Transfer) Tax Return for non-residentForm 8849 Schedule 3 (Calendar year 2011), Certain Fuel Mixtures and the Alternative Fuel Credit The delay affects both paper and electronic filers. All these returns should not be filed until the IRS is ready to start processing these returns. The February 14 filing date recently announced by the IRS does not apply to the forms listed on this page. IRS will announce a specific date in the near future when we will begin processing these affected forms. Here is the link to the IRS news page.
  22. The question is whether your software provider is willing to file them early. I am glad that ATX is holding off. I will wait a couple of days to let the tidal wave go through, then I will file the Schedule A people I have. Feb 17 is my date this year.
  23. Why the rush?? Just wait till Feb. 17 and worry about important things!!
  24. Is it acceptable for the ERO to choose the same PIN for multiple clients? Yes, it is acceptable to assign the same PIN for multiple clients
  25. Did you vote in the last election??
