  1. I know they do it on Virginia - I almost got caught that way a couple of times early on.
  2. I have not personally used it, but I have heard that CFS makes a module for payroll forms and 1099's. I use their tax tools module for loan amortizations and other miscellaneous forms. http://www.taxtools.com/Default.aspx
  3. You might want to specify where you are -at least the state - so that if someone offers to help you, they will be helpful on the state returns you do the most of as well as federal.
  4. Even if she did not live with him, and I don't think his "temporary absence" would really count against that, as custodial parent, if he (and the non-custodial parent) provided over half the support, and the non-custodial parent isn't going to claim the child (which they can't without the for surrendering the exemption since they are non-custodial) he should be able to claim dependency and all the goodies that go with it. ( I think - this has been the longest tax season ever and I am not sure of my name any more, much less basic tax law.)
  5. This year, I think I am too tired to scream.
  6. Maybe its because we live in a throw-away society! :P
  7. I really think it is a fiduciary return you are thinking about instead of an estate return, and if the income that would be moved to the 1041 is less than $600, I don't believe you need to file. It would include all income after her death that was in her name - interest, dividends, IRA distributions, etc.
  8. One of my bookkeeping clients sent me flowers today - what a bright spot in an otherwise hellacious day!
  9. I have never been able to.
  10. And when you read the notice, is it possible they are telling him to file a 944 instead of a 941? They are pretty insistent on getting the one they want you to file.
  11. I read an interesting article about the heat from a laptop being used in men's laps being a contributing factor to male infertility. Seems it is becoming more and more common. B)
  12. My favorite reasons for efiling are that the IRS (and the state of VA) must acknowledge they got the return, without the cost of certified mailing, and it is more environmentally friendly - one copy of everything for the client rather than two. Plus no trying to help the client "guess" how much postage their twenty page tax return will take. Fewer trips to the post office. Fewer stamps. I also get fewer letters saying they didn't get this form or that form, and fewer phone calls from clients telling me they "accidentally" took apart the copy they were supposed to mail - what pages go with that? I love efiling.
  13. Not to mention how much fun is to have everything that you tell them questioned and argued with, even when you have done the appropriate research. I think we all get grouchy this time of year, and much more willing to tell clients that if they know so much about how it should be done to leave us alone and do it themselves!
  14. I am not sure I understand what you are asking - sale of inventory is ordinary income. :dunno:
  15. Stop smoking the frikken bananas! :P
  16. Yes, I have downloaded forms twice today. I have the 941M, but not the regular 941.
  17. Can you explain why the security around accessing MyAtx has been tightened to such an extreme? I am currently locked out, and have been putting off calling ATX to get back in. I also saw a thread earlier that we would not be helped with problems accessing prior years software until after tax season. Is this true? And finally, why do I not have form 2555 yet, or the 2008 version of form 941. I realize this is a lot of topics, but it is hard to find time to talk on the phone, whereas hopefully I can post this and come back in a little while to answers. Thank you for joining us.
  18. I have found it interesting that I have had at least half a dozen who came in for "stimulus returns' and left owing taxes. Income has all been correctly reported interest, dividends, pensions, etc with proper 1099's and correct social security numbers, and yet they have not gotten letters in the past telling them they should have filed, and in at least half the cases I don't think this is the first year their interest went over the limits. Interesting side effect of publicizing the need to file to get this "free money." B)
  19. Also, it is probably too late to make much difference with this child, but a Coverdell Education IRA can be set up, and I believe the proceeds from that can be used tax-free for any education expenses. However, the only tax break is on the earnings - contributions are not deductible. Therefore, unless it has had time to grow substantially, it really doesn't help much.
  20. I had a client come in today and tell me that her mother called HRB to find out the cost of the stimulus return. They told her $35. She took all her paperwork to them, which included some interest and dividends, small pension, not enough to file but she took everything to go with her social security. They charged her $195 for the return, and when she questioned it they told her she had been misquoted on the price. She paid it,but her daughter is furious and is telling everyone who will hold still for it how much HRB ripped her mother off.
  21. I cannot confirm for Georgia, but it would not be taxable in Virginia so that may well be the correct treatment in GA.
  22. I must be missing something here, but I would have thought that if the estate were going to pay the tax on the interest earned by the bonds, it would go on a 1041, not a 706.
  23. :D CONGRATULATIONS! Hope you have a wonderful vacation!
  24. Its Sunday, and I am not at the office where my books are, but I think I remember something about if he lived here all year last year, and his wife was citizen of another country the entire year (in other words, they did not live together at all during the year) then he can legally file single. Except for that, I think jainen is correct.
