You are assuming that he was diligent and actually spent 15 months on the audit, to me it seems like it was a place to hang his hat for a while. We had an audit here that was almost as long since we kept getting more and more doc requests. After we got the report of owing $250k we played lets make a deal. There were 3 shareholders, and a corp involved spanning 3 years. We explained that we would agree to the tax if there were no penalties, and that the tax on one shareholder had to be reduced or she wouldn't agree and go to appeal, her share was under $10k. Also if it were brought down to around $200 it could get paid without instalment agreements etc. Low and behold when we got the papers to sign with all adjustments it came to $198k.

if the client is willing to pay the tax then the penalty becomes a bargaining chip as to whether or not you agree with the audit. It is negotiable. After 15 months, the last thing the agent needs is an unagreeded to audit. Sounds like your office is near his home and he liked having a local place to hang out at. I once had that, the agent even came in floppies and would leave at 1 to go to the beach.

I just tried this and it worked but will see after a reboot later on. As for the other suggestions, I didn't change any settings about security or cookies etc. As it turns out I am having the same issues with other programs in that they aren't even remembering my user name.

What I don't get is every time it snows the news shows how hardware stores can't keep up with the demand for shovels.. Do people think they are disposable and only good for one snow? Do they think with global warming they will never need a shovel again? I have the same shovels that I bought 16 years ago when I bought my house. I did add to my collections as my children grew and needed bigger shovels to help out.

I had to delete my cookies because of an issue with another site and now this board will not longer automatically log me in as it used to. Not a big deal but does anyone [eric] have any ideas? I log in and check the box to remember me but it doesn't. thanks.

I keep receipts for the 3 open years on paper, older than that I only keep the scans. Of course as MP pointed out, there are exceptions to every rule.

i too made the same suggestions and corrections year after year but not till I got into an email friendship with one of the developers did anything get done. He told me that most "suggestions" don't even reach the developers.

my old Daisy bb gun could fire finishing nails dropped down the barrel, breaks the light and leaves nothing incrimination like a bullet or bb. -

Did you stop filing these after the supreme court ruled them unconstitutional? Now that the court of appeals ruled them legal are you going to file the old years or wait to see if NY catches them? Some of my clients wanted to stop filing the returns and some wanted to continue with them. Out of about 125 clients the tax effects only 1 so far received a letter for the prior years with interest and penalties. My plan is to prepare the returns without interest or penalties included, and leave it up to the client as to whether or not they file them.

Engagement Letters for the Individual Tax Practitioner
michaelmars replied to Elrod's topic in General Chat
my letter [4 pages so far] includes estimated taxes, tax audits, record retention, business vs personal expenses, use of email, offsite storage, use of estimates, professional judgment, that I will not transmit until an authorization is in hand, that I am not auditing what they give me, assumption that all estimates are paid unless they tell me otherwise, nexus with other states and much more. most liability carriers put out sample letters and you can pick and choose from theirs. -
