  1. If you don't mind giving Microsoft permission to install updates when it pleases and reboot your computer without asking. Why do you think they changed 'My Computer' to 'This PC'?
  2. BINGO! And why would anyone with common sense design a two half-pages form instead of a one page form? Answer: just so some politicians can say 'postcard'. I need to meditate to lower my blood pressure.
  3. This is good news: It is not uncommon that for legal or other non-tax reasons taxpayers may segregate rental property from operating businesses. This rule allows taxpayers to aggregate their trades or businesses with the associated rental But it doesn't look like regular residential and commercial rental income qualifies for 199A.
  4. You can always go to 8.1 for a few years before we have 10 forced on us. 10 is largely based on 8.1 so you can get familiar with the inevitable future. I've been using it with zero problems since 2013. It's actually my favorite flavor of windows ever. It's faster, more secure and simply works better than 7. FYI, I almost never go into the 'modern interface' of 8.1. There's one or two settings that are only there and you set those once in the beginning and you're done. I never installed a 3rd party menu for 8, because I just pin my main tasks to the taskbar, my secondary tasks are in the QuickLaunch bar and I have desktop icons for rarely used programs. And if I need something unusual, I press the WinKey and start typing and it finds it in seconds.
  5. Sadly, just federal. It would be quite a task to do one for all states with an income tax.
  6. $10 an hour clerks rule the world. If they don't know how to leave a payment on account, you're getting a refund! Although, refunding part of that second check is beyond the pale.
  7. Did you recently install or update security software? (antivirus, firewall, etc.) Try turning off ALL security software and see what happens.
  8. You don't have to go with 10 on a new computer. I just rebuilt a computer and moved the old drive into the new one. The drive was not that old. If your drive is old, you could clone it to a new drive and save a lot of time setting up the new computer. I use and love 8.1 and won't go to 10 until it's forced upon me.
  9. Check/adjust your mouse settings and see if there is a driver update for your mouse. Uninstall/reinstall your mouse. It takes two clicks to open a return.
  10. Nope. I typed that on my computer. Kinda scary when your brain crosses a circuit.

    EIN #

Do you have the EIN letter? Are you sure the name is entered correctly? If the EIN simply isn't in the IRS database, you won't be able to efile. You could pull a transcript to see if the W2 is posted, then use the EIN and name listed.
  12. I don't see how the deceased can be 'responsible' or even responsive.
  13. seriously?
  14. I have a similar conversation with some of my wealthier clients who don't want me to apply refunds to both the first and second quarter, when filing close to 4/15. IT'S ONLY ABOUT SIX WEEKS THAT YOU'LL HAVE THAT MONEY. You'll only earn about $10 of interest on that 5,000 estimate and that's if you put the refund in your savings account. Is that really worth it?
  15. #1 rule: Ain't broke, don't fix.
  16. The IRS has very old computer systems that don't connect with each other automatically, so it's very believable that the system that sends the automated letters out does not know that a payment is pending, but not yet applied to the balance due. Very believable. When my clients file an amended paper return and get a letter like this, I do nothing. I tell the client to relax, enjoy their summer and wait for the dust to settle. It will eventually work itself out and you will get a correct notice of interest and penalties due. I always calculated what the P&I is in ATX so we have some idea of about what they should be.
  17. Yeah, you won't get rid of me when I retire. I will still come hear to taunt... harass... stay in touch with old friends.
  18. https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/microsoft/an-open-letter-to-microsoft-about-poor-windows-10-update-experiences/ I see consultants turning off updates completely as they see that as the only way they can have stable systems I see Server admins saying that Server 2016 is fine except when you want a system that doesn't reboot.
  19. Eset is the lightest drain on system resources I've ever seen.
  20. I included a 2018 projection with every return this year. Usually with exact same income, but if I knew 18 income would be different, I changed the numbers. Also assumed a decrease in withholding. Only took a few minutes, in most cases. So my clients have already paid for it. Any further projections will be billed at normal hourly rates.
  21. Congrats on your retirement! And best wishes in all you do. You will be missed!
  22. I have zero qualms about recommending Eset NOD32 antivirus. I have used since the 90s. I have employees and employees can't be trusted. I check their quarantine folders once a month and occasionally find a website element that was blocked. And, of course, they never remember going to such a site. It also caught a virus on a USB drive from a client. And it has HIPS, as does my firewall, which blocks suspicious behavior on the system.
  23. And the fall elections which will conveniently come before the piper has to be paid.
  24. Sorry, I'm not running a computer without live virus protection. It's cheap insurance.
