  1. @Eric, you take such good care of us. No complaints, for Heaven's sake! We you !
  2. I was told today by a client that if MFJ with children, both spouses must opt out, or one will receive half. I haven't studied any of this, so it was probably posted somewhere already. I'm in summer mode and picking at the leftover returns at this point.

    Perfectly agree. Perfectly.

It seems like we tax pros and taxpayers have zero representation anymore. Somebody should have seen this coming. And these slow refunds are blowing up my phone and emails wondering where the refund is.... even though they have checked and it's being processed. This is causing even more calls to the IRS. It's awful.

Do we still have a practitioner priority line for the IRS? I have 866-860-4259 in my phone, but haven't used it in a couple of years. VA has one, 804-367-9286, and that is the ONLY thing this state does well.

I'm suspicious of fraud and would insist on seeing the notice myself before I advise. The state of VA often requests this, and I insist on seeing the notice and responding by e-fax myself.

Waiting to see what others have to say. I could have my client in my office or facetime with them to help them. I have not needed to do that yet.
  8. I asked a colleague who does a lot of Trucker tax returns and she said this, "Everlance is good for tracking both (income and expenses). It also sends you a monthly statement with all your expenses, income and mileage."
  9. I'm glad I don't do payroll. ugh
  10. That's true. He probably entered the FEIN for the employer. Maybe it did indeed reject and the DIY software didn't notify him. That's what I'm thinking. I'd look at that letter and make sure it's legitimate, then proceed from there. Still, you wouldn't amend for a tax ID number, would you? It never should have flown. As far as the IRS knows, the tax return doesn't belong to anyone, right?
  11. I am surprised it was accepted as well. I would wait and see how that phone call goes before I take the next step. It doesn't seem right to amend for a tax ID number, so we will wait for some others to respond.
  12. The 3115 isn't as bad as it looks. Use the line by line instructions. Also, if they are in a high tax bracket, they might have some suspended losses that can be used to their benefit. You can do this. It's not hard, honestly. I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed, but I can do the 3115. You got this.
  13. Congratulations! And welcome to the club!
  14. Here is the question; When TP graduated college, did he then begin working in CT before joining the military in CT? If so, then the military might have deemed CT his HOR. But, as @HAHN1040 stated, TP can keep NJ as long as he didn't actually change his tax home. If not, then file the NJ resident return and file the CT as a non-resident. I have a feeling that the TP began working and living in CT after college, and the military determined his HOR for him, OR it was an error that needs to be changed. Sorry to have dropped the ball on this. I'm traveling and if I access the site from my phone, I'm another person. I popped in on my home computer remotely to respond. So, if you see..... like.... Cher... it's just me.
  15. With the military, you file the Home of Record as resident only. If the military member ALSO had non-military income from another state, the state where he/she actually resides, then you would file as a NON-resident for the other state, the one that is NOT his/her HOR. It doesn't matter if they own a home in the state where they are living/serving. The HOR supersedes as far as the resident return goes. Maybe I am not understanding the situation.
  16. I know the DFAS pension is not taxable to Hawaii, but what about OPM pension? I see that "public pensions" are not taxed, but I don't know what Hawaii deems taxable and non-taxable specifically from OPM. I have Thrift Savings Plan pension here, too. I believe that one IS taxable. Praying someone from Hawaii will chime in on this. Thanks!
  17. Honestly! If the software would nail the state for us, how wonderful would that be? In this military area, it is imperative that I can do these states well, and do them right the first time. It ain't easy.
  18. Yup. Not surprised. They are so backed up it's crazy. Your clients will eventually get the refunds with interest... interest that will be taxable income next year, of course. If not for the huge back log, I would suggest calling the Practitioner Priority Line, but this is happening everywhere to everyone. I wouldn't waste my time.
  19. Taxwise has always been real good at answering the calls. It's the software that has been a thorn in my side for the last few years.
  20. No, I tried my EFIN, PTIN, and EIN before calling CO AND TW. I just hate chasing bunnies like this. We all do, I know.
  21. The spouse last name did not carry to all the forms. A software issue. I got it now. 2.5 hours later. This client could never pay me enough to do this state return.
  22. I have been given the OR PRIORITY line number 503-947-3541. They said it's software. Calling TW now. 2 hrs so far. So frustrating.
  23. No, I'm using TaxWise. If anyone has a practitioner priority line, please let me know.
  24. I can't get around this "License number" to efile. uggggggg I'll have to call them.
  25. thanks! I couldn't find that online.
