  1. Clients bring me single malt scotch. And then we sit and drink and talk for an hour or so
  2. My email last night: "Would you like me to file an extension for you?" client emails reply this morning: "thanks for the note. Well i probably should. We just moved and I got really behind this time. I have everything but probably would be good just in case. I don't want to get you the stuff too late" Hey Pal, it was too late two weeks ago.
  3. AZ gives a $25 per person refund, no matter what. I prepare one freebie for this elderly couple because I like them so much.
  4. Did the SCorp shareholder sell his company's assets to another company, or did he sell his assets piecemeal to different buyers? Was the goodwill already on the books and being amortized when your client closed his company, or is this goodwill from the sale of the assets? The small tools and equipment are treated as sold for fair market value. The cost basis would be zero if the stuff was expensed.
  5. Those late folks who didn't get their tax stuff together until the very last minute "because we know we're going to owe a lot."
  6. This was going to be the year i filed extensions instead of pushing to get the returns finished. Pretty nervous about that. Most of the clients want their returns by the due date, no matter when then give me their paperwork. I don't want to lose clients My business model has always been to make every client feel like the only client, and I charge pretty high fees for that.
  7. Not gonna happen. She needs that money for rent and food. I'm just not going there.....
  8. We also appear to be poor. Sometimes when Hubby is out walking the dog, I'm afraid some kindly stranger is going to offer him money.
  9. My magic 8 ball says line 12 on the SE form pg. 2 would be $1,590
  10. Yes to all of the above. Sincerely
  11. Her dad just passed away. She got a divorce in 2015. Divorce agreement says Ex gets to claim the kid in 2015. She is self employed and is going to qualify for a fat EITC. Kid lives with her. I just don't have any urge at all to ever prepare any return with Sch C and EITC. She'll have to paper file because Ex is going to win the race to efile. She can't pay me more than $80 to prepare the return much less any fee to deal with the bloody aftermath. So, I sent an email and said I wasn't going to do her return this year and I'm sorry. I am sorry for her, but this drama is too much.
  12. I think it will. I've filed the late 2553 with a late filed 1120S last year. Everything return was accepted, and the client got the penalty letter. I used the First Time abatement request over the phone and that worked. Get your POA up front because you will need it, and let the client know that a penalty letter will probably be coming and that they need to give that to you ASAP.
  13. ....and then the success My most beloved and enormou$ client called to tell me that his banker is very impressed with his CPA. That would be me. I've had to figure out some stuff and explain some things, etc. If I was a cat, I'd be licking my shoulder right now
  14. See Rev. Proc. 2013-30: https://www.irs.gov/Businesses/Small-Businesses-&-Self-Employed/Late-Election-Relief Don't forget to note "reasonable cause". I always blame the attorney.
  15. I can feel my red face!!!!! I first told a very nice client about a week ago that he would owe around $16k. He wasn't happy, but has the money to pay. Today, I call and tell him he will be getting a $5k refund. He's confused but delighted. I had reviewed the return twice, every screen. I looked at the return again. No Sch C activity at all, and it's a chunk. For some reason, I had toggled to keep the Sch C off the return. So then I have to tell him that, No! He DOES owe the $16k!! I feel like an idiot!! He was understanding but pretty shocked. I am totally done for this day. He'll like the fat discount I'm giving him on the fee for make for the roller coaster ride.
  16. 1. Right or wrong, I quit cutting W2 forms apart unless I have to for paper filing. I run the whole form through the copy machine and just keep that. 2. It is sort of soothing to actually fire PITA clients rather than hope they don't come back. I do it in a nice way. $75 is what it costs to never have to deal with their crap again.
  17. {{{{}}}}. Virtual hug to everyone!
  18. Human nature. My client lost his long time girlfriend to cancer. He said he found himself apologizing to her every day in his mind. He took such good care of her, provided for her, loved her until the very end, gave her safety and security while she fought. I reminded him of that and he seemed to lighten up right there. He was going to stay home, alone, for Easter. When he left, he said maybe he would put together some fun Easter baskets for the family nieces and nephews and go to the dinner after all. I don't know why we are so very hard on ourselves.
  19. I sort of like crossing the line into real exhaustion. Nothing else exists or matters except the work. That mono-focus is pretty liberating in some ways. What's for dinner? Well, maybe a frozen pot pie and a glass of single malt. Who cares? What should I wear today? Well, what's clean in the closet? Did my stupid sister hurt my feelings today? Yes. Should I go round and round or simply plot revenge? The obvious answer is to plot revenge and enjoy it by going out of town for Thanksgiving. Sis was supposed to cook for us on alternating years. After two years in a row of showing up for dinner and there's nothing, we relieved her of that duty and we always host. Going to Baja this year. Vaya con Dios, you crappy little blighter!!!! Hmmmph!
