  1. On CNN (actually HLN) this morning, a financial advisor stated and put up a chart that ANYONE who gets an SS retirement check, veterans retirement, etc., practically any kind of a government retirement check, will automatically receive a $250 stimulus check. The treasury is supposed to be geared up to do this as quickly as possible. Since I haven't seen anything on this board about it or anywhere else, I wondered if any of you had. Guess too many others haven't heard because my phone isn't ringing like crazy wanting to know if they had to file to get a stimulus check. AnnieR
  2. Have a client whose wife owes back child support. She doesn't work, he has minimum pay job (bartender) and is being treated for cancer. State is going after wife for the CS...only about $2000. Client calls the CS bureau about setting payments with them, and still getting tax refund. The advisor at CS tells him to file HOH, take his wife as a dependent along with his 2 children (not the ones she owes CS on) and he'll get EIC, etc. and none of his return will be able to be touched by CS. Thank God, he believes me, not the advisor. AnnieR
  3. Sherri, I use the general tax form all the time and I've never had it double the agi. I just enter the amount from W-2 box 18 onto the W-2 worksheet and it automatically goes to the general form. The only time it would double would be if I entered the same amt for two different cities. AnnieR
  4. Salem, OH (small town between Youngstown and Alliance) Salem has some old homes that were on the Underground Railroad. It's the birthplace of Alan Freed (rock & roll disk jockey). And lots of empty/foreclosed homes and more empty factories monthly. Close to Ponderosa Park (Country Music campground). Oh, yeah, also is in Jim Traficant's old congressional district. Not terribly promising, is it? Of course my real hometown is Sheboygan, WI, where I lived growing up.
  5. Bob, I had an ex-client call and ask me to do his return...he wanted to claim his girlfriend and her two children, who, when I got really specific, told me that they "essentially lived with him all year". Then he casually mentioned that his "girlfriend" is still married and her husband is in prison and the father of the children, who is not the prisoner but another ex, wanted to claim them. I "essentially" told him to have someone else take care of the return, I didn't have time. Then he said that HRB turned him down, that really more than essentially did him in. AnnieR

    YEAH......GOT THEM, AT LAST. AnnieR
  7. Client brought in last year's return prepared by HRB and preparer fees were $125 for a 1040EZ and $87 for bank fees. AnnieR
  8. Canton offers on-line filing. It's the only one I've heard of. One of my clients used it to file her Canton return on my computer while I watched. She got it right! AnnieR

    Debt Markers

Has anyone received debt markers for accepted returns? I noticed that they are not coming up with "N" but I filed one that the client thought would have part of the refund withheld because she owed some back child support, but it was accepted today without a marker. Just wondering. AnnieR
  10. Clients are living together, not married. Woman has custody of child from a previous marriage, Man claims daughter who is a product of this situation, HOH, because his W-2 income is about $1000 more than woman's. Since the woman has custody of her son, receives child support from ex-husband, has a full time job, she claims her son on her return. They split bills equally, own home together. Can she also file as HOH. His W-2 income is 30k, hers 29k, plus she gets child support. Why am I confused???? AnnieR

Haven't gotten any acks, BUT--I went to OH Where's My Refund and found one accepted by the IRS on the 18th..OH refund deposited on the 21st. Guess we have to do it the sneaky way. AnnieR

    OH Acks

I haven't received any either. AnnieR
  14. I always wait until the return has been accepted and the refund has been received. AnnieR
  15. NATP also has a research department that is very good. One free "question/problem" is included with membership. The organization has been a great help to me, being a sole preparer, as a source for most of the materials I need. AnnieR

  18. Maybe Tuesday, since tomorrow is a holiday. Thanks, I thought it was just me Annie
  19. I went to the IRS.gov site and used the link to "How much was my stimulus payment". Every time I enter the information and click on "continue" it informs me that my session has ended. Anybody have a solution? AnnieR
  20. What scares me is that I had someone call me to do his return because HR turned him down for an RAL. Do you suppose it was because he wanted to take his girlfriend and her children as dependents, even though she was still married to her "soon to be ex" and he was in jail but she and her children lived with this guy for "essentially" the whole year. No, I'm not desperate enough to take him as a client either. AnnieR
  21. A relative of mine is raising money for him and his family to "minister" at a Bible Camp. The receipt states that "all contributions are tax-deductible, receipts will be provided." He has to raise approximately $2000 a month in contributions before they can "minister", checks are to be made payable to the Bible Camp, but the $2000 goes to them as a "salary. I have my opinions about whether or not this is deductable as a charitable contribution. All I can say is "Thank God I don't live near them", but what do the rest of you think about this. BTW, when he and his wife went to China, they did the same thing, actually I got a letter requesting $5000 so they could go and it also was said to be a "charitable contribution". Sorry, I didn't reply. AnnieR
