  1. For some reason, the worksheet for the retirement credit is subtracting the amt of taxable SS from the pension income. In this case, pension income is 5580, taxable SS is 4748, which the software is subtracting from 5580 to come up with the 832 eligible for credit. I have to over=ride the SS amt to get the correct figure. Is it just me, or is this a strange little error in the software? AnnieR
  2. Last year a new client tried to e-file with her husband-reject because her last name didn't match her SS#. Filed it with her maiden name and it went right through. This year, she brought me her SS card, it does have her married name on it with the right #. Card was kind of beat-up, so she has had it for a while. Guess what--it went through with the maiden name again! I told her to contact SSA after their refund is in their bank account to try to straighten this out. AnnieR

    Strange error

It just dawned...the rejection says w/h cannot be more than wages and there are no wages. Could that possibly be what the problem is? AnnieR

    Strange error

Why don't you delete the information you have entered and start over? Perhaps if you entered $250.00 the system isn't recognizing the . and is seeing 25000? It's worth a shot. Don't use the decimal point, just enter $250 AnnieR

    OH Acks FINALLY

Just got all of my OH Acks -- returns e-filed from 1/14 up to now!!! Took a while, didn't it? AnnieR
  6. I just deleted that form, rebooted, and brought the form back in the return and it's ok. Maybe it's just a sunday Glitch? AnnieR
  7. I just prepared my first return with an SD tax and the software is doubling the amount withheld, instead of $136, which is what I entered from the W-2, $272 is showing up on the return. I have no idea how to inform tech support, so maybe we have to go it alone? AnnieR

    OH ACKs

I haven't seen any either. If I have to, I go to the OH Where's My Refund site and put the information there. The ones I've done have all gotten notification that the refund is in their accounts. That's the best I can do. Karen Fisk's office has also told me that one was accepted. AnnieR
  9. Client who did not file in 2006 got one of those infamous 2269 letters. The amount they are wanting included in his AGI is the amt. they have on file from a 1099R, which is coded, according to their printout as a G. OK, I'll do the return, show the IRS the retirees owe no money, but if the IRS wants to they can give them their telephone rebate. Now for the real screw-up. As I was going through the printouts, I came across one for a woman in Bronx, NY. (we're in OH). Of course, it had her name, address SS#, plus the amt. on her 1099R from 2006 that they wanted claimed. These were all sorted by hand, had the "important" parts highlighted in yellow along with written notation. Anybody have any idea what to do with the one my client shouldn't have, shouldn't have seen, and violates the NY lady's privacy??? AnnieR
  10. JB First of all, how the heck did you get an ACK from OH? As to your question, go to the OH Dept of Taxation Website and use the "Where's my refund" icon on the right hand side of the home page. I had to call Karen Fisk's office to get an ack and had used the website first. The notification there was that a letter was being sent to the tp due to a hold on the refund from the state Attorney General's Office. I have no idea what that's about, there was nothing held back on the Fed return. AnnieR
  11. Thanks KC, I really appreciate it.
  12. Client received Lump Sum Distribution for SSDisability in 2007, covering part of 2005, all of 2006 and all of 2007. No problem with 05 & 07, but in 06, he had only $1150 in unemployment and his mother claimed him as a dependent as in that year she did totally support him. Now that he was awarded the SSD for 06, do I have to amend his mother's return, removing him as a dependent? I am going to do the Lump Sum Distribution for 07, as soon as the worksheet is available. Thanks in Advance, AnnieR
  13. I just updated (again) and F8880 is approved and ready for efile. AnnieR

    EFile ?

Eli, The information I got from a posting on Kleinrock Tax Talk List was that the IRS sent a Quick Alert that ACKS would not be issued by the IRS until sometime tomorrow (Sunday) morning. Right now I'm so confused I'm not sure what time or where I read it, but I do know it was a Quick Alert. AnnieR
  15. If you go to download center, you will find that as of 4:10 p.m. today, the update for EIC is approved. Maybe another update will work. AnnieR
  16. Pedro, have you been updating your forms at least once a day? I haven't tried to create an e-file, but when I downloaded my updates today, I received notice that all forms in the return were up to date. I don't intend to e-file until after the weekend. AnnieR
  17. Thanks Deb, that is really helpful because I know that I am going to have more than a few of these. This section of OH has a very high foreclosure rate and I see some client names on the foreclosure sale lists every week. This is not a highly populated county (Columbiana), but every week there are at least three pages in Friday's newspapers listing sheriff sales. AnnieR
  18. Thanks, KC. I thought that was it, but just wanted to be sure. AnnieR
  19. Clients have purchased their new home by land contract. He asked me a question that I think I know the answer to but I thought I'd get your opinions, cites, etc. We know he can deduct the interest he pays on the land contract, the owner of the property has to claim that as income...now...the owner still has a mortgage on that property, the payments on which are exactly the same amount my client is paying each month. Can the holder of the land contract then deduct that same interest on his Sch A? Thanks in advance, AnnieR
  20. Mine just got here too. This is the earliest I have ever received it. Ought to be interesting if/when Congress passes any changes before the end of the year. AnnieR
  21. I had written about this previously and now have further information, if anyone needs it. In the sale of American Standard Bathtubs and Sinks to Bain, resulting in a new Corp. named AS Americas, the stock in ESOPs, employee stock purchases, etc., which was American Standard stock, was converted to Trane at a rate of 1 share of Trane stock for 3 of American Standard. The ESOPs can be rolled over into IRAs. AnnieR
  22. Quite a few of my clients work for American Standard, which was sold to Bain and as of today operates as AS Americas. These people had a 401 (k) plan with a 3% match which was in American Standard stock (the ESOP). Is there any reason why some of these people are being told that they can't roll over the ESOP? I realize investment brokers are all over these people trying to get all they can, and the company has been no help in explaining anything to the employees. Since there is no more American Standard, their stock in the ESOP is being replaced by Trane. Many of them have quite a bit of money put into these plans. Some brokers are pushing the older ones to cash out the ESOP and pay capital gains taxes as an NUA. Others are telling them they must cash it out as it can't be rolled over. Any ideas out there? AnnieR
  23. 1) "is sent to a small percentage of our population on a rotating basis; " 2) "helps determine how more than $300 billion per year is distributed;" If they will promise to send me $300 billion, I'll volunteer to fill it out.. I'm with you on that. It is really quite a thorough survey, intrusive would be a good word. Thanks for the information. Annie
  24. Thanks, Taxbilly, I haven't been on this site for a while, and it's amazing what I have missed. Thanks again. AnnieR
  25. My neighbor received an American Community Survey, from the census bureau. It looks legitimate but I have not heard of the Census Bureau sending anything out. Usually there is something in a newspaper that surveys are being taken. She is nervous about sending out her personal information without any verification of authenticity. Has anyone else received these lately? I really appreciate your input. Thanks, Annie R
