  1. A friend (and client) of mine inherited the home of her companion when he passed away this year. She has lived in the home with him for the past 6 years, actually from the day he bought it. He purchased the home in his name only, she is the only beneficiary of the estate. She cannot afford the upkeep of the home, insurance, taxes, etc., so is planning on selling it. The property will be transferred into her name on August 12. When/if (in the market in this area, I doubt if she'll be able to sell it at appraisal price), can she use any of the S121 exemption, and if so, going back to what date? Thank you, AnnieR
  2. According to CNN today, that's also the day Bill Gates leaves Microsoft. coincidence? AnnieR
  3. I renewed on-line this evening with absolutely no problem. In fact, when I logged onto my checking account less than 5 minutes later, the debit had already gone through! Now that was FAST! AnnieR
  4. IRS.GOV now has a link to a "Where's my stimulus payment " page, just like "Where's my refund". Now we can tell our clients to look it up themselves!!! AnnieR
  5. Today it was $3.63. Who knows what tomorrow will bring
  6. As I always say----s---happens! AnnieR
  7. I got a notice to download the latest update, did that and the transmission went right through. AnnieR
  8. A client referred his ex-wife to me and warned me that she was not the brightest star in the sky...oh, I think he was right! Her 8 year old son has a savings account that he didn't have last year...her mother gave it to him...well, the son had $1200 in interest this year...nice, grandma! So I did a return for the son, and he (she) had to pay tax on the amount. I explained to her about the $850 deduction and she asked me if she divided the money into two accounts, he'd only get $600 from each and he wouldn't have to pay any tax. I was very kind and told her she'd have to add the two amounts together, she didn't realize that! AnnieR

    Just got acks

Seems like it's working again! It's now noon, EDT in case anybody wonders. AnnieR
  10. I do returns for a large extended family. Most of them are really nice people, one I'd rather do without but the new member I did returns for this year is a treasure!! Besides being nice, he's a baker and whenever any of his in-laws, brothers, sisters, mother mention they are coming to see me, he sends along breads, cakes, cookies, whatever is available. Now that really makes me feel appreciated. AnnieR
  11. Son lives with mother (when not in school, when in school he lives in an apartment financed by the mother). He earned $3300 this year, has education expenses (which of course, mother paid) of $30,000. Only aberration in this is...he is 43 years old. I'm inclined to give her the dependency & education credit because he made 3300 but don't know if the age would come into it. Am I right...don't give any comments about the situation, I've thought of all of them. AnnieR
  12. Judy, I don't want to seem unduly suspicious, but, are you sure there really was withholding and this is not some sort of a scam. I have had some would-be clients come to me with W-2's or 1099's I was suspicious about and some I have actually refused to do the return....such as the young woman who brought me hers and her boyfriends information to do their returns, did neither. He had a Sch C, "paid" her as an independent contractor, ok, 9k off his income, 9k in hers, with a dependent she got good EIC. Sorry!! There might be something going on that you're not aware of. AnnieR
  13. If you're using atx, it should be in the top right hand corner of the "filers info" page of 1040A. If it isn't there, download the latest update and it will be there then! AnnieR
  14. I want to know whose idea it was to send 1040A's to all people who get social security...especially during tax season!!! I mean 3 year olds are getting them, EVERYBODY!! And they all are calling to see if they have to file (well, not the 3 year olds), people who have already filed are calling to find out how to fill out the form they got! This is getting more incredible and stupid by the day! I had an elderly (older than me) client at my door at 8:30 this morning with copies of his 2006 and 2007 returns, asking me to fill out the form he got from SS. AnnieR
  15. My 5# neutered female Japanese Chin leaves "gifts" during the night behind my husband's recliner. Guess she likes him more than she likes me! AnnieR
  16. No, to file an easy return entirely by phone! There is no Liberty Tax Service in our local area. And no, it wasn't an ad in our bulletin. I do "easy" returns like that for no fee for clients who no longer have to file returns and so do the 9 or 10 preparers, EAs, CPAs in our church. Nothing was said about buying an ad, which by the way, Liberty doesn't.
  17. Today in our church bulletin was this notice: "Need help getting your Stimulus Rebate Check?? Call Liberty Income Tax Service and get FREE help. Ask for --- or --- and they will gladly help you. There is no fee for this service. You will need to provide your name, address, phone number, social security number and income from last year or a good estimate. This can be done over the phone. This information will be kept confidential and given only to the IRS under Form 8879. You will then be eligible to receive your rebate check." AnnieR

    Dependent?

Yes, it is that one in Pima County, AZ. JCCARE has gotten quite a few so far. As far as we know, they will be getting all the Chin. I know what you mean, I'd be doing the adopting, fostering thing, too if I was closer. Too bad we can't claim them as dependents.

    Dependent?

She's so pretty...sorry I called her by the wrong breed. The group I belong to is involved in the rescue going on in AZ. I have 2 neutered Japanese Chin. It's JCCARE, and they don't know how many Chin there are going to be in the rescue...anywhere from 10 to 94.

    Dependent?

Client has son who is a full time college student, college expenses on the 1098T are over $9,000, which were paid by the client. Student had income of $4900, everything is ok so far...now...son's birthday is 5-1-83. Am I correct that the father cannot claim the student as a dependent and the amount on the 1099 is lost? Thanks AnnieR
  22. In case anyone thinks I have invaded my client's privacy, there have been articles in the local papers about his medical situation along with fund raisers, raffles, collections. It is public knowledge as to his condition. Annie
  23. I got a phone call today from Sheila Toney at the Oh Dept of Taxation concerning a return I had e-filed on January 30, with an Injured Spouse. She wanted me to mail her copies of the IS's W-2's. In this case the IS is the husband, all earnings are his. I explained this to her and I also told her that this young man is undergoing treatment for cancer, he's unable to work and when he has chemo once a month, he spends that week in the hospital. She asked me to fax the W-2s to her and the fax machine was right outside her office door, she would walk the forms to the payment dept and make sure the payment order was made today. I called the couple later and they told me that she had called and told them that the situation had been taken care of. Sometimes you find a heart in the middle of a mess! AnnieR
  24. hate it!!! BUT, my small dog never adjusted her meal time to standard time. Maybe now she'll quit starting to beg for food at 3 in the afternoon! We can set out clocks by her! Guess when you only weigh 5# you don't have much in reserve. AnnieR
