    Dependent?

Young man (19) is being home schooled. Last year he was considered a HS jr. Now to really confuse it. He has a full-time job, made almost $25k last year, but his mother tutored him at night. He did complete the work required to be considered a HS sr. this year. He does live at home--is he still a dependent? AnnieR
  2. How about the newly employed TEACHER who called and wanted to know why she got a bigger refund than her boyfriend...I DIDN'T DO HER BOYFRIEND'S RETURN!!! Don't even know anything about her boyfriend! How the heck do I know? After all the software gave a notice that she was over-withheld! Does that count? Okay, I feel all better now! AnnieR
  3. Thank you, Joan. Yes, she is the beneficiary and is 68 years old. He was 73, but I don't believe he had started RMDs yet. AnnieR
  4. Client's "fiance of 30 years" passed away, she is beneficiary of his will, executrix, etc. If she withdraws money from his IRA, which the bank officer said they would give her $15,000 right now, does that make the remainder of his IRA taxable to her unless she rolls it over into another IRA? Don't know if it matters or not, but the majority of the $$ would go to pay his funeral expenses. Thanks for your knowledgeable answers. AnnieR
  5. Don't know about MA, but I've done NC NR and Part-Year returns for the past three years. AnnieR
  6. Just when you think it can't get any more ridiculous...client called the # on the Variance letter, person she talked to gave the same spiel about PY returns, told client that she would be sent the form in the mail, attach it to the variance letter, etc. Client brought it to me and guess what????c'mon, GUESS!! "THEY" SENT HER A 2006 RETURN TO file!!! What the heck is going on??? AnnieR

    OH RITA & CCA

What used to be a real PITA, not RITA, were the returns for the AT&T and Western Electric workers who would have worked throughout the state and each city had their own taxes, plus lived in a city which would allow only 1/2 of 1% credit. Those were the days, my friends!!! Annie R

As an OH preparer, I actually see that you are catching on as to how things work here. Not only that, if you have a PY SD100, the IRS computers are not picking up lines 3 or 16, so clients are getting lots of variance letters! I have a return (and thank God that it's a relative, cause I told her to take it to her local tax office) where the client lived in Lakewood and North Royalton, paid estimated taxes to Lakewood, had income from Valley View and Olmstead Falls. Wanna try that one? NOT ! AnnieR
  9. I was just told by "Mike" at OH income tax department, NOT to use ATX for part year SD100 returns because the software is not picking up the Line 2 and Line 16 adjustments. He also told me to inform ATX, so if one of you would be so kind, please do so. I can't get into MyATX..locked out and don't have time to mess with them. I have had two returns sent back to my clients with SDVAR031. This is for e-filed returns only. Thanks AnnieR
  10. I think (sometimes I really do) that within the past year, OH has limited no more than 2 state refunds to one account. Might be what's happened. AnnieR
  11. Last week, one of my e-f clients called and asked when her son's refund would be deposited. He had checked with the bank on Friday (the 8th) and it wasn't in the account. Went to "Where's my refund" and the deposit date given was the 12th, a Tuesday. Today another client called, her return was accepted on the 12th, no deposit yet, (coulda, woulda, shoulda been the 22), and the date given her on the Where's my Refund is March 4. When did the IRS start depositing on Tuesday? And how did they get behind...I know, no date is guaranteed!! AnnieR

    Errors clear up?

If they are in blue, they are just suggestions but if in red they have to be corrected before the e-file can be done. AnnieR
  13. I used to build and assemble those things, along with water controls and spare parts. If you need any instruction, let me know! AnnieR
  14. Here is how I have done it. Click on the space next to "or year beginning" at the top of the return. Using your up & down arrows, first click up until the little box is in the empty space over the printing. Click on the left arrow a few spaces and print "Stimulus Return" in that area. I know it's not a very technical explanation, but it works. AnnieR
  15. As an ex-Wisconsinite (Sheboygan), where there was a tavern on two of the four corners of the block in our middle-class rather nice neighborhood....come on, somebody's got to be making a profit...there was the little old lady on our block who used to cross the street to the tavern with her bucket at 8:30 in the morning to get her day started!! AnnieR
  16. I know I mentioned this before, but the 11 year old boy turned out to be an 11 year old girl. She is active in 4-H and her group sponsored a benefit dinner. This was held on a weekend at the local school. I don't know how Ohio State University figures into all this (that's who issued the 1099), but at the end of the dinner, when the "grown-ups" were figuring up the funds, they asked one of the mothers for her daughter's SS number so they could issue the check to the 4-H club. Clear as mud, right? Anyway, that's how over $900 is on a 1099Misc, box 7 in a little girl's name...now how the heck do I get rid of it? AnnieR
  17. I got a totally different answer, but between flipping from the return to this, I'm not sure it's right, but the way to do it is to use OH form 2023 pg 2 and it will carry everything to where it should go. I got that he owes $285. Hope I'm right. I used $18,682 and on 2023, subtracted out $6227 as OH income. Only 4 months of the Ford pension is OH income, so that is all of it that would be taxable. 19. I've been trying to post the link but I don't seem to be able to. Sooo - Go to irs.gov and click on Stimulus Payments: Answers to Frequently Asked Questions. It has some answers to the questions we've all been asking. AnnieR

    OH ACKS

Booger, Mine haven't been calling to tell me they haven't gotten their refunds, so that's a pretty good sign, too! LOL AnnieR

    OH ACKS

Just received this from Karen Fisk's office AnnieR You received this email because you are on the Ohio e-file practitioner's email list. Many of you have called or sent me an email regarding your acknowledgements for returns that were transmitted Friday February 8. Generally returns that are transmitted on Friday are picked up and processed by Ohio on Monday. There was a delay in processing acknowledgements this week due to the large number of efiled returns that we received on Monday. We changed our policy to prevent this problem. We will pick up and process returns on Saturdays and Sundays through the rest of the tax season. This should alleviate problems with delayed acknowledgments. Your software company should have received the acknowledgements yesterday afternoon. Please let me know if you are still missing acks from the weekend.

  23. oh, please, please, please give me her address. AnnieR
  24. We're supposed to get 6-9 inches of snow in this part of OH starting tonight. Talked to my cousin who lives in Sheboygan, WI the other day and she had to call her neighbor to shovel snow so she could get her door open...they had 12" at that time, with 17" total predicted. Now that's winter! If it's bad here tomorrow at least I'll be able to catch up on these returns. AnnieR
  25. Client's son (11) received a 1099MISC from OH State University for $980. He "earned" it for work he did with 4-H at the state fair. I have NEVER come across this before...does he have to pay SE tax on this? Doesn't seem fair to work at the fair and have to pay SE, does it? AnnieR
