  1. A very happy birthday wish to an "old" friend. Have many, many more. :D
  2. Sara, chances are if he received SS, he also recieved the $250. I haven't met a client yet this year who remembers getting it. If you don't put $250 on line 10 and check yes, the IRS will reject the return if he did receive the payment last Spring. He is the only one who can find out for sure from SS whether he got it or not. I have sent clients home to check their bank statements and, guess what, they usually got it and never even noticed.
  3. Yes, it is a standard deduction for OTR truckers and I have never had one checked and have done a lot of them over the years. It is for meals, entertainment and miscellaneous expenses. If he had motel rooms or other expenses, they are additional deductions. It used to be figured at 50% of the total for DOT drivers. It has gone up in 5% increments over the years to where it was at 80% last year. When they get to 85%; they will stop the increase. 85% was the standard many years ago. The Form 2106 for each year will tell you what the percentage of deduction is for DOT drivers; which means that they have to transport materials, products or humans interstate. If you really have an issue finding out what the per diem rate was for each year, either Gail or I can help you with that. If he is strictly intrastate, he is only allowed to deduct 50% and, incidentally, these days out have to be days spent overnight away from home.

    1099 misc

Sounds to me like this individual is taking the dirt for fill for his yard and getting paid to take it. I would always rather put something like this on Line 21 with an explaination; rather than line 7 which will confuse the IRS. We sure are making some mountains out of molehills (I mean swimming holes) this year.

    1099 misc

I would use box 7........is the private party in the business of excavating or something to that effect?
  6. Here too, and ACKs are coming through really fast....
  7. I'm glad that someone else asked that question because I have been wondering about it for two days. In any case, I have been happy with the "skin" that I have and when I look at that drop down box; mine is not clean cut.
  8. I stand corrected. But, I'm still not going there.
  9. Personally, I have learned more from reading between Jainen's lines than one would ever think. Nobody can make you feel small unless you allow them to.
  10. It is WAY too early to expect the refunds to show up on the website. First checks are only scheduled to go out tomorrow and that is definitely not a given.
  11. At some point, we were distinctly told that the $250 payments would NOT be addressed on the 1099-SSA.
  12. I want some too........and it just happens that bananas are on sale this week. However, with one good eye and one bad eye, shopping is a difficulty for me right now and I don't know anyone who has the time or is willing to make me a pie.
  13. How can you cheat on this closely monitored board? Anyway, Tom, welcome to the heights. I guess that some of us just have faster fingers, nosier minds or something. However, you have helped me tremendously at times. Thank you.
  14. Along that same line, Alan Jackson and Jimmy Buffett have a great song entitled, "It's five o'clock somewhere!" I have that CD "somewhere".
  15. Do you really want to know what I think?????? It's all part of the learning curve.....
  16. It's always lunch time somewhere. I didn't have any pie, though.
  17. No Kidding.......but sure had my head spinning there for a while. NOW, can we pass the test?
  18. Without a qualifying child, you cannot claim EIC if you are under the age of 25.
  19. You do have to be registered with the IRS as an ERO for business forms, which is easy to do online, where you can edit your ERO application if need be. Also, I found out in prior years after several failed attempts, that you do have to have an EIN # to enter onto the Partnership E-file Return. Otherwise, it works the same as any other. In prior years, I did have to paper file the state return; but this year, I believe, WI is going to allow them to be filed electronically.

    bond interest

I don't think that you have the option to choose. And, in any event, wouldn't the interest income pass through to them on the K-1 and they would still have to pay the tax. Also, check your state laws because in WI bond interest is exempt from state tax.
  21. Absolutely! I learn so much from this Community and save so much time with research just by reading the posts of interest here.
  22. Unless you are in a state where it is illegal to cohabitate, you can file your scenario for both Fed and State. HOH, Child and Other.
  23. There is no practicality in it. And, there is no easy way to do it. Have only done it occasionally as a paid favor for friend; less than one a year. Which takes us back to the original question; where is the sense in the statement from the IRS website?
  24. I have had other preparers bring their returns to me to efile. However, I con't see how you would get to be an ERO if you weren't going to prepare returns also.
