  4. Tom, that's a _terrific_ idea. And Booger, I went and looked up (and then bought) "The Missing Manual" myself. Been using QB for years but there are _always_ new tricks to learn to make a program do what you want.

  6. Having a good, local IT person can be the best thing ever. They exist, you can see and talk to them, and they're the ones who would fix your machine if you had one built. I do most of my configuring myself, and it takes me a good couple of weeks to get a new machine running the way I prefer. I've been thinking of finding a local person myself. VMSUS does good online/phone support, but it's not like they can come here and wiggle cables. Catherine
  7. The year I offered "Fee Collect", no one used it. I do have a button on my web site for PayPal payments (client does NOT have to have an account, but it's the only way I'll take a credit card). My engagement letter says clearly "Due Upon Presentation" but of course there are always one or two that delay, and I generally efile the returns anyway. For the most part they are good clients who have forgotten their checkbook that day. The couple who, in the past, haven't, I've "tweaked" their tax letters in January to say that all past-due balances must be paid before new work can begin. That usually brings them into line. I'd give them each a call -- or, if you can, email (or fax) them an invoice, marked "PAST DUE" (don't waste postage), and see if that shakes any payments loose. Then perhaps go the "removing my name as "paid preparer" letter" route with the ten-day response. Those would have to be mailed, so that's why I'd try the email/fax routine first. Good luck! It is SO annoying when people don't pay. Catherine

  10. I mentioned this bit to my husband, and he told me that while this is true, they have also completely removed all ability to use anything that came with even-earlier operating systems. So if you have some programs from your days with Windows NT, and that work just fine on your current XP Pro machine, those same programs will NOT work with Windows 7. For what it's worth....
  11. Congratulations, Booger!! Hope it all goes VERY smoothly. The lesser commute and being your own boss are each great things; putting them together will be super. Be warned, however -- once you've been your own boss for a while, it becomes next to impossible to ever contemplate going back to working for someone else. Catherine
  12. I've been here and working all day. However, I've taken to only checking in once or twice, since so many folks seem to be away. Lion, hope all the pre-wedding prep goes well! Catherine

  23. Here's a tidbit for our amusement. I stumbled across this using the StumbleUpon web tool. 10 words for strange little things; how many did YOU know? 10 Words I knew 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, and 9.
  24. From a New Yorker cartoon: two men in high-end business suits. One says, "These new regulations will totally change the way we get around them." 'Nuff said.
