I would say taxable if the student recieved a refund, no if its to be used for next school year.

Are accountants/experienced tax preparers the only that get upset when someone's says "I just input the numbers and the software does everything"? I get pretty upset if a client tells me that (just input the numbers), honest truth.

Rant: Client's that don't set up their voicemail
ILLMAS replied to NECPA in NEBRASKA's topic in General Chat
Caller ID yes, but sometimes only the number appears on missed calls, I have a million things to do, so if you don't leave a message you are not getting a callback. I am a one person business, I tried answering ever single call that came in the past, but I notice I was getting no work done and leaving the office after 7pm for the last 8 years, missed my daughter's first 8 years of childhood for being married to my work/clients. <- my biggest regret and saddens me everyday. -
Rant: Client's that don't set up their voicemail
ILLMAS replied to NECPA in NEBRASKA's topic in General Chat
I have clients that Sometimes call me nonstop, I only return their call if they leave a message, other that they can call all they want. My office phone is not a cellphone, it doesn't receive texts nor tells me of the missed calls. -
I’ll drink to that, actually I’m already drinking

This reminds of a misfortune a former client went through, neighbor house burned down and the flames burned my clients wood porch, smoked damaged all their belongings and the insurance reimbursement them for every single item: Plastic cup .01 cent Console TV $2.00 Fly swatter .02 cent etc About 60 pages totaling around $4K, I had to explain to the client the FMV and how they were not entitled to the original cost.

TP reached out to me in early February and told me by email and over the phone she had been separated, divorcing over the last two years and that TP would be claiming the kids because she had them most of the time. Based on these: Can a married person claim the Head of Household filing status? The Head of Household status is designed for single persons with dependents, but in some cases, married persons can claim the Head of Household filing status. To qualify for the Head of Household filing status while married, you must: File your taxes separately from your spouse Pay more than half of the household expenses Not have lived with your spouse for the last 6 months of the year Provide the principle home of a qualifying dependent Claim an exemption for your dependent If you meet all of these requirements, you may file as Head of Household while married. TP qualified for HOH, today I get an email forwarded from the ex-spouse saying TP has to file MFJ or MFS and based on his facts, ex-spouse is correct. I probably won’t be moving a finger since my invoice has not been paid, but who else hates when this happens?

You are retired, you don’t get involved and let the friend who found the mistake handle it. People have to respect your space and their is nothing wrong with informing them, I just had a last minute client send me their information thinking they are getting priority, who are they kidding

I'm in the same shoes as you, dependent student got married last year and will be filing with husband this year, both were dependent and students on parents return in 2016, they are concerned that they should be getting a bigger refund because they are students and that husband received a 2K credit in 2016. I told her if she was not to busy, to review the husband prior year tax return and when she finds the 2K credit to show it to me, if i read the IRS rules correctly, the parents should claim the credit not the dependent, in this case student son did and received a 1k credit. If I get frustrated, client gets fired, that's that.

Would anybody here be able to review a form 1045 (2 years) for me? It's my first time preparing one and want to make sure I am preparing correct, anyone (PM me)? I prepared a sample returns, no names or SS# are being used, just the numbers are real. Thanks MAS

No depreciation, however it did require major improvements which I am going to add to the cost basis. Thanks

TP is a real estate agent and owns/rents multiple properties, TP acquired a property in 2016 was planning to convert it into a rental property, someone made him an offer and he took it. Would this be reported on Sch D (short-term), Sch C (inventory) or even on 4797? TP is not into the business of flipping houses, but you can say it's a one time flip. Thanks MAS

Ship I am going to send my client student dependents to that school, it's like pulling teeth with some or a "whatcha talkin bout Willis" look.
-
What a mess, ask for a huge retainer for all the work you’ll be doing if it’s possible. How about just filing a zero 1065 for 2107, report the revenue and expenses on Sch C and sentd the client back to the prior preparer. Sometimes it’s stinks trying to be a superhero.

You can always use a voice generator: http://onlinetonegenerator.com/voice-generator.html
