I check with my sister in our old family home outside Chicago and feel better. Although, her streets are flat and straight and get plowed fast while I drive on narrow, windy, hilly roads that get plowed if the school buses are running! I think I'll start checking Catherine's link instead.2 points

Currently -10 degrees. Low tonight -15 degrees. No need to talk about wind chill. COLD IS COLD!! Coldest in 20 years here. Good news!! The gnat, mosquito, fly, bean beetle and ant populations will be significantly lower, as well as the soil in the garden will be much softer and better for the plants next spring.2 points

My out of the box website by CCH's Site Builder has a lot of built-in Financial Tools for Loans and other topics, such as this Amortizing Loan Calculator: http://www.dollarssense.com/financial_tools.html Maybe the above or one of the other tools on that page would meet your needs for free. PS I agree that Excel has some handy templates that you already own. Check them out before you spend money.2 points

" The real reason for this thread got lost in the mud pages ago. An ATX client was having the same problem with rollovers on a NEW computer that I had. Since Jack fixed my problem, I referred that post to Jack. I believe Jack contacted the poster directly and helped him. From then on bedlam ensued. I thought this was supposed to be a tax board wherein we could help each other with program and tax issues. In addition, there are friendly and conversational threads clearly marked; between some of us who have "known" each other for a long time. I don't care how you resolve these jump-in posts that clearly lead the thread astray. But, please do try to put an end to them. I am getting a headache." I thought before I commented on this thread, that maybe it would be better to start a new, more clearly labeled thread. Quite often, as this board is conversational in tone, the subject of the thread winds up far astray from the original posting. I expected that to lessen once we had a separate forum for political posts, but since the tone is conversational I don't think it will ever completely go away. Most of the time I don't have a problem with that, and I think that friendly tone is what makes it hard for newcomers and the moderators to judge what and when to shut down these random offshoots from the original thread. Many times, all that is necessary is to ignore the off-topic posts and make a post that gets the thread back on topic. I really don't want this board to lose the informality we have had in the past, but I also don't want to see it degenerate into just a few posters arguing back and forth over everything that is said. Sometimes the best thing to say is nothing at all.1 point

When I get to feeling like winter is a bit too much, I go check out the forecast and current status for Cambridge Bay, Nunavut, Canada (old DEW station WWAAYY up north). Current conditions -22F; wind chill -50F. Maybe two hours of daylight (sunrise 11:30 AM sunset 1:30 PM). Blowing and drifting snow. NO advisories; this is "normal" winter weather for them. http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast?query=zmw:00000.1.719251 point

Someone re-gifted some homemade moonshine to us for Christmas. It smelled exactly like acetone and I don't even dare to taste it.1 point

Taxed, on 03 Jan 2014 - 12:21 PM, said: I would not have expected anything else from you. You bought into the paranoid baseless irrational fear. Still waiting for the example of an e-mail being "intercepted." I agree with the above procedure, Even if it is useless and irrational, if something leaks out I would rather show that I took recommended steps to control the data than didn't. Sort of like a doctor that runs extra tests "just in case" It plays better with the attorneys and satisfies the insurance company. We do a lot of things that don't make sense "just because". We aren't allowed to send out an email with SS#'s unless encrypted in NY and would you rather spend 30 seconds encrypting an email or fighting with banks, the state etc.1 point

One day a man decided to retire He booked himself on a Caribbean cruise and proceeded to have the time of his life, that is, until the ship sank. He soon found himself on an island with no other people, no supplies, nothing, only bananas and coconuts. After about four months, he is lying on the beach one day when the most gorgeous woman he has ever seen rows up to the shore. In disbelief, he asks, Where did you come from? How did you get here? She replies, I rowed over from the other side of the island where I landed when my fishing boat sank. Amazing, he notes. You were really lucky to have a row boat wash up with you. Oh, this thing? explains the woman. I made the boat out of some raw material I found on the island. The oars were whittled from gum tree branches. I wove the bottom from palm tree branches, and the sides and stern came from an Eucalyptus tree. But, where did you get the tools? Oh, that was no problem, replied the woman. On the south side of the island, a very unusual stratum of alluvial rock is exposed. I found that if I fired it to a certain temperature in a volcanic vent I found just down island, it melted into ductile iron and I used that to make tools and used the tools to make the hardware. The guy is stunned. Lets row over to my place, she says and Ill give you a tour. So, after a short time of rowing, she soon docks the boat at a small hand built wharf. As the man looks to shore, he nearly falls off the boat. Before him is a long stone walk leading to a cabin and tree house. While the woman ties up the rowboat with an expertly woven hemp rope, the man can only stare ahead, dumb struck. As they walk into the house, she says casually, Its not much, but I call it home. Please sit down. Would you like a drink? No! No thank you, the man blurts out, still dazed. I cant take another drop of coconut juice. Oh, its not coconut juice, winks the woman. I have a still. How would you like a Jack Daniels neat? Trying to hide his continued amazement, the man accepts, and they sit down on her couch to talk. After they exchange their individual survival stories, the woman announces, Im going to slip into something more comfortable. Would you like to take a shower and shave? Theres a razor in the bathroom cabinet upstairs. No longer questioning anything, the man goes upstairs into the bathroom. There, in the cabinet is a razor made from a piece of tortoise bone. Two shells honed to a hollow ground edge are fastened on to its end inside a swivel mechanism. This woman is amazing, he muses. Whats next? When he returns, she greets him wearing nothing but a bandana around her blonde locks and some small flowers on tiny vines, each strategically positioned, she smelled faintly of coconut oil. She then beckons for him to sit down next to her. Tell me, she begins suggestively, slithering closer to him, Weve both been out here for many months. You must have been lonely. When was the last time you had a really good ride? She stares into his eyes. He cant believe what hes hearing. You mean he swallows excitedly as tears start to form in his eyes, Youve built a Harley?1 point

The program is a true server based program. Therefore, each machine will have to have program updates done on each machines. I believe the preferences may follow the user, so, each user will have to set the preferences for their login. This is the price of having a true server based program and the stability that goes with it. If you have not set up users in the security settings, you should do so. To maintain "consistency", just inform all your staff of the new program requirements and especially tell your I.T. person as well.1 point

Jack, please stop. This person has not slammed ATX in this thread, as was your prior complaints. He has also stated on several occasions that he purchased ATX in hopes of using it this year, but has also purchased Drake if ATX doesn't work well for his firm. He is allowed to ask questions here.1 point

Why not check with Maryland itself? I know Maryland has at least one form that pass-through entities must file. As always, I strongly recommend getting local legal advice for the specific state before choosing a form of entity (which is pretty close to practicing law). Serve the client professionally, pocket a referral fee for a one-minute phone call, and move on to the next task.1 point

You know, I feel the same as you. However, as my husband always points out (he thinks my prices are way too low...and that I should charge as much as those with real overhead)....my clients get very personalized attention. I don't think "the big guys" can do that....I don't think you even get the same preparer at "the big guys" every year. The personalized service should command bigger fees, if anything. I don't know about you....but "my people" contact me year round about "life changes" (new job, new baby etc). I can't imagine calling H&R just to tell them "my wife had a baby!" I've already decided to charge more this year (another thread). What's the worst than can happen....less work but the same income. And with "all these risks", who needs the potential headaches without the additional compensation.1 point

I can tell you right now that I could not charge $261 for a 1040 with Sch A. My competition is not the CPA shop or Liberty tax. It is the next fellow down the street who is just like me, doing part-time out of his home office.1 point
