  1. Each person that is insured will receive a 1095-B from the insurer, regardless of where they get the coverage or who pays for it. It will show the dates of coverage and other information. Very similar to the MA 1099-HC. It will also include information about the amounts of any subsidy the taxpayer receives. Employers that provide health coverage for their employees will send a 1095-C form to each employee showing how much is paid by the employer and how much is paid by the employee. There will be 2 additional forms needed for every Federal return. One will be used to calculate any subsidy to see if the correct amount was received. This could cause an additional refund amount or additional tax, depending upon the numbers entered when the person signed up through the exchange compared to the actual numbers on the tax return. The second will be to calculate any penalty for not having insurance for the adequate amount of months and to calculate if employer provided insurance is "affordable" by the ACA standards. I am instituting another increase in my fees. I have spent 16 hours of training time on the ACA alone in the last 12 months and expect at least that much this coming summer and fall. As preparers, we are also be held accountable for the accuracy of information on these two forms. My increase will be totally "blamed" on the ACA and the requirements I must meet to properly document and report this information on the 2014 tax return. I am expecting a good year for 2014 because there is no way the "DIY" tax programs or "Freefile" can ask the proper questions nor vette out the answers given. Much confusion means greater demand for my knowledge and services.

  2. They hit me really early on the renewal subject; both with phone and e-mail. I think they were sure that I would sign immediately. I haven't for a couple of personal reasons which I am discussing with ATX reps. Of course, I am getting nowhere fast. They don't care that I had serious issues with the beta program. They are adamant that nobody is going to get special consideration this year. So they say, but I beg to differ as I have seen posts to the contrary; such as two and three year renewal deals. The squeakiest wheels got the grease and those of us who were faithful and supportive of them are told to go sit in the corner and play like nice little kids. I feel strongly that the $85 increase should be waived for those of us who renewed early in 2013 in spite of the 2012 fiasco. I am sitting on the fence for a while.

  12. I have NEVER failed to have a penalty abated for failure to take a RMD. Most recent was a woman in her 80s who had never taken a single distribution from her TIAA-CREF. I just told the IRS she was old and didn't understand the mail she received. (Didn't tell them she likely didn't even open the mail she received.) Think about it. The IRS already has an image problem. It would look awful in the public's eyes (and some TV news department is likely to get a hold of it and put it in the public's eyes) if they were to penalize poor old widows of half of their yearly income by imposing the stiff penalty. Go ahead and file the 5329. Mention that she missed the deadline by only 20 days and has taken steps to correct the oversight in future years by signing up for automatic RMD with the custodian (and make sure she does so).

  13. I got rid of a lot of annoying problems when I updated to IE 11 several weeks ago. I ran the long scan on Malwarebytes the other night and picked up 148 Pup files which are now in Quarantine. I assume that these are pop ups. Will run CC Cleaner tonight. I love Bill Gates. If not for him, we might still be slogging along in the world of non-technology. I often wonder what my life might have been like if I had access to the devices we have today when I was in my teens and twenties. I'll never know the answer to that, but I learned a lot through reading. Today I learn a lot through my computers and tablets. I don't have a smart phone because I don't need or want one. I do have two tablets both with data through either WiFi or ATT. Love IT. These are the little gifts that I give to ME.

  19. Funny, I had to ask those two questions. Most of my drivers keep the reefer fuel separate in order to claim the off-road fuel tax credit. The one I finished the other night actually had almost $800 in fuel tax credit alone. Thanks for explaining those two distinctive terms to the board. You did a far better job of it than I could have. I have had truckers for all of my professional career; my son having been one for over 20 years. Some are employees and some are SE Tractor owners. I remember years ago, running around trying to find a 2106 for to record employee road expenses for all of my Greenhouse drivers. Things have sure changed.

  20. If then amount is substantial, amend. Amending does NOT increase your chance of audit. Fly straight, fly right, do it correctly and amend.
