  3. I would rather use pencil and paper (and erasers) - or an abacus - than software from the 70's. Unless it was DOS. I *liked* DOS and could make it dance in circles.

  6. There are private letter rulings (LTR 200807005 for example) that allow for replacement property to be held by disregarded entities. So the fact that title to the replacement property is in the name of a disregarded LLC is not necessarily a problem. If the LLC was not owned by the S Corporation at the time of the exchange, that may be a problem, but not necessarily. In the letter ruling the taxpayer wanted to acquire as the replacement 100% of the partners' interest in a partnership that owned the property, and that was deemed a good exchange. I would caution against dissolving the corporation without careful research. There will be a deemed sale of the property at fair market value upon liquidation and gain or loss recognized by the corporation and taxed to the shareholder, and it will do nothing to cure a failed exchange, if that is the case.

  7. I have a UN employee as a client. Is your client working here or overseas? US citizen, green card holder, not? my client has a lot of emoluments too; hardship, hazard, etc. she is a US citizen and it's all included as salary, but a bunch of it isn't taxable because she is overseas.

  8. WASHINGTON (AP) — A CIA-backed technology company has found logins and passwords for 47 government agencies strewn across the Web — available for hackers, spies and thieves. Recorded Future, a social media data mining firm backed by the CIA's venture capital arm, says in a report that login credentials for nearly every federal agency have been posted on open Internet sites for those who know where to look. According to the company, at least 12 agencies don't require authentication beyond passwords to access their networks, so those agencies are vulnerable to espionage and cyberattacks. The company says logins and passwords were found connected with the departments of Defense, Justice, Treasury and Energy, as well as the CIA and the Director of National Intelligence. Shocking, just shocking

  13. it's used because airbnb asks for it. Airbnb is an American company....so the income is American. The owner isn't renting it out directly. The are using airbnb as an agent....and airbnb takes a fee. if a number isn't furnished...the income isn't reported. If it is furnished...a 1099-K (for social security numbers).. ...or a 1042-S (for itin numbers) is issued. I do lots of these....mostly for non-Americans ...and I've seen it reported (and not reported) all ways. The bottom line is airbnb is American. It doesn't matter where the property is. Just want to add....if the guy put the home on Craigslist...and rented it....it would NOT be American income.

  17. That's pretty cool. Donate to a new nonprofit you set up to receive the donation. Get a tax deduction on your 1040. Then the private (not nonprofit) walks away with the donation at no cost to them. I can see why people retire to Arizona!
