  1. So sorry, jasdim! Like NECPA, mine has been fine so far. Well, there is that miscalculation in the health care expense deduction in the Ohio return that has been known and reported (but not to us!) for some time, grrrr.... But no other problems here. Check your task manager. Maybe that will pinpoint the issue. And this is assuming you have LOTS of ram, latest chip, all that jazz. Maybe you missed a few dance steps, too. Or maybe call for tech support and see if they or your local tech guru can remote in and check. So sorry, hope it gets better soon.
  2. Sorry, I forgot to reread the beginning of this thread. Just a guess here that you may have to use a non-professional tax software. Otherwise, can't you paid with alternate currency? Love, chocolate chip cookies, bitcoin (heh, heh)?
  3. If any client EVER acknowledges bitcoin transaction, they will no longer be my client. That is simply beyond my expertise or interest.
  4. I'm not Judy but just remove the Paid Preparer information and leave the ERO information. They are separate in the system. If the return is open, Tools/Preparer/ERO>Remove Preparer
  5. Apparently Form 843 is a possibility but she may choose not to go through that hassle. I think she is missing a document needed for that. I just feel for her, that the university put her in this situation. After a phone conversation with someone there in the international tax department, the explanation is that there was a software change just at that time and, as the university could choose to treat her as a regular employee and not give her Form 8233 to complete, they did. If she wants the $2100 deferred comp back, it will cost her 20% early withdrawal or wait until she is 55. Just wrong, in my opinion.
  6. Ragnar Lothbrook is on his way. I am SOOOO happy to see another Vikings fan! My husband thinks I am a bit nuts but I loved that series. I just might have to have another go at it. Once I get the staples out, papers out of envelopes, all in order, etc.
  7. Thanks, Pacun. It turns out the ITIN from 2017 expired end of 2019 (never really used as no 1099 issued) so an SSN was obtained. She should have completed a Form 8233 to get a 1042-S but, for whatever reason, that didn't happen. I am using only the 1040NR. I am just trying to find out what happened. She qualifies for exemption under the treaty, Article 20 (1), Visiting Professor, it is clear. She had a J-1 visa which expired May 30, 2020. She did not receive and will not receive stimulus money. I am more concerned about getting back her withheld income and Medicare tax as well as the deferred compensation to a retirement plan in which she should have never been enrolled. I have called the university international tax office now 3 times with no return call. Trying again tomorrow.
  8. At the risk of jinxing myself, I have to say that, again this year, I have experienced none of the problems described by users here. I didn't in 2012, either. Guess I had best care for my lucky stars even while I do feel for folks with problems. Maybe my computer setup? The guy who builds them? My sweet nature and good looks? Dunno but I am really glad as I have enough issues with 'special' clients.
  9. I think, in the defense of these folks, that this process somehow helps them feel organized and have a sense of control. Memories fade and gathering these documents once a year can be a scary thing for people who are number and tax phobic and worried about missing something and getting a nasty gram from IRS. Like jasdim, though, the hands on identifiers make me a bit, um, anxious except that "I'm billing time."
  10. This is what I found https://toledo.oh.gov/how-to-pay-your-income-taxes/joint-economic-development-district-jedd I'm not sure what your question is.
  11. Yes, that ratio can be a pain. I have several German clients (resident aliens, mostly, some with green cards) that are annoyed every year that they don't get full credit and some have substantial carryovers. I think much will never be used.
  12. My package, ATX 1040, increased by 4.8% to $843.59. The list price jumped from $799 to $839, 5% and the processing fee increased by $3. My discount is still 15%. It does irk me that the other fees are up again, not by much but it adds up. I don't do business returns any longer but do need more than 3 states for a handful of outliers, good long term clients. That has increased, too, but I don't want to lose those clients. And it gets earlier all the time. Last year's renewal notice has a quote date of April 1. This year's 'document date' is March 6 although just received last week. As I wind down my practice, though, I will stick with what I've known since 1997. I am beyond nickle and diming and appreciate familiarity. And, frankly, I can afford this and still have enough to fund my dive trips, especially having saved money in 2020. Now going in March 2022 as Indonesia is still closed. I may even spring for first class tickets this time!
  13. ILLMAS, this has nothing at all to do with the browser I use. I have always used IE per IRS 'requirements' until this last attempted breach when the agent at the help desk told me to use Chrome. And this happened because of the previous attempted hack and I had to reset my password. It isn't me trying unsuccessfully to login and failing. It's someone else trying to hack in. PaulH, the help desk agent said I could not change my username but maybe I will ask again. I mean, with 4, count 'em, 4 hack attempts, it seems that I should be able to do that. Bank accounts, etc. are much easier, in my opinion, to change but it is appropriate for IRS to make it this hard. I'm just tired of being the victim of an e-services hack. I'll stop complaining now. It's 73 and sunny, a beautiful day. I just need to get this fixed soon to check on some 2848's I uploaded recently.
  14. For the 4th time my e-services account has had attempted and failed access thus locked - again - for 24 hours. Why me? The only good thing is that it means access was denied to whoever is trying this. Just so frustrating! It's good the sun is shining today and 69 degrees plus a good workout, finally, back at the gym so my mood isn't as bad as it could be. Hope your Monday is going well!
  15. Thanks for this information. Her visa type is on the list of questions I still have to ask. It expired last May so was likely a short term one as she was to be here for just that one semester. I have a call into the university tax compliance officer to try to find out how and why she got an SSN. Never should have happened. But fingers are pointing everywhere in the 'not my fault' vein. She definitely should have completed Form 8233 and never received a W-2 let alone contribute to a retirement plan. The person with whom I originally spoke tried to blame her for not returning it to whatever office or not understanding it. I figured I would have to file the 1040NR with her SSN as the W-2 has it in order to get her withholdings refunded. I don't believe she has any other tax records outside the W-2 and the retirement deferred comp. The only other time she was in the US was for a lecture and her travel was reimbursed. I suspect the ITIN was to enable a reimbursement payment. And I would be surprised if she still has a copy, if ever received, of a CP 565. I will ask. On Schedule OI I am wondering what to put regarding her 'immigration' status at year end and whether she changed her visa type. She didn't. It expired. At least I have the treaty and the correct Tax treaty article to claim the benefit. Thanks for the guidance. It has helped.
  16. When I e-filed the amended 2019 returns, on the Form e-filed, 1040X showed up but when creating the e-file only 1040 showed as an option. Perhaps that has changed since January. I just know it worked fine.
  17. Just make sure you open the original return (or the return that you did not prepare but enter the data as originally e-filed) then choose Amend. I believe that is the preferred way rather than duplicating though not sure why. Also note that when ready to e-file, 1040X will not show up as an option: it will show 1040. After submitting, you will see in the documents filed that the 1040 AND the 1040X will have been sent. Went very easily with mine once I realized no 1040X will show to e-file. Good luck, let us know when to celebrate your success - we need every celebration we can get!
  18. Another German client, yes, I keep getting them. This one gave a lecture in 2017 and was reimbursed $500 travel expenses but had to get an ITIN then, I don't have complete history yet. In 2020, she was the visiting professor for 10 weeks or so on a Max Kade grant. The university did not have her complete Form 8233 (trying to blame her now) and had her get an SSN. So she received a W-2 and was automatically enrolled in State Teachers Retirement System with contribution deferral. With that and significant taxes withheld, she has a lot that needs to be returned. None of this should have happened, she should have had a 1042S, no withholdings, no deferrals. I am trying to complete 1040NR but unsure of which identifying number to use where. Her W-2 has the SSN so am leaning that direction but her visa had ITIN. Schedule OI also wants identifying number which would have been ITIN had this been done correctly. She opened a bank account while here and the bank now wants a W8BEN but it really should be 8233. Maybe she should provide both one with ITIN and one with SSN? My brain is getting too mushy for these continuing complications. At least I managed to hold off my UI clients and APTC client. This poor woman is just bewildered with our tax system - me, too!
  19. Do you have MAX or just 1040? If 1040, what 3 states did you choose? If you have not chosen these for your states, you have to pay extra for other states. What message are you getting? I've efiled at least 2 returns with part-year 2 states already.
  20. Judy, another and another deep breath. Family first so hoping your husband's recovery is back on track now. And good riddance to bad rubbish. When I think of all the super nice clients I am lucky to have, I know that having clients that lie simply is not worth the money or mental energy it takes to even try to keep them in compliance. They don't want to so I don't want them. If needed, keep venting here. It's a safe place and we all so appreciate all you do.
  21. Yes, the browser issue is getting annoying. For ages we've been told to use only IE then IE 11+. I otherwise use Firefox. During my trials getting back to e-services, the help desk had me use Chrome because it seems IE sometimes causes problems. She said they weren't supposed to deviate from IE but have found that sometimes only Chrome will work. So for IRS e-services, I now use Chrome. Clearly Lion's mileage has varied from mine!
  22. Thanks and ugh! I was hoping for sooner. Oh well. Did you check every few days or find out otherwise when good to go?
  23. I am so happy to be back in the good graces of e-services once again and have successfully uploaded 3 Forms 2848 online. The page says process in order of receipt but has anyone here done this? If so, how long did it take for processing? Thanks
  24. Found online: What is the Occupational License Fee? The Occupational License Fee is a one and seventy-eight hundredths (1.78)** percent privilege license fee levied and imposed on the earnings of a person, association, corporation or other entity engaged in any occupation, trade, profession or other activity conducted or performed in the corporate city limits of Owensboro. The fee is assessed equally on both residents and non-residents of the city. For an employee, the license fee is withheld by the employer at the rate of one and seventy-eight hundredths (1.78)** percent of the salaries, wages, commissions and other compensation earned for work done or services performed or rendered in the city.
  25. You think I can do it? I sent her that link and she doesn't seem to be able to get through it. I always get concerned in trying to do things for clients when I have to input the information which, of course, I know, but am not that person. I haven't gone through the whole process myself. I will at least ask her if she would like for me to try. I am a bit suspicious that she received the letter with the PIN and didn't read down to the bottom to see it. I have asked her to fax it to me because she actually never told me how she knew she was getting a PIN. Other clients have just received the letter and provided it. Sigh...it's always something...
