I never file before being paid, and receiving the signed 8879. Both happen before I click transmit.

The three day window is not a concern. We have e-file over 15,000 returns in the past 5 years with not a single reference to the "three day window." Reality does not allow that rule to be adhered to. Your question about spouses signing for each other... We don't allow it in our office, but who knows who is actually signing when it is sent to them? Undated 8879 fits #1

I put a blank cassette tape in my tape stereo last night and turned the volume all the way up....the mime next door went nuts!

Unless ATX moves the program to a 64bit program, 4GB of RAM is all that you need. Any additional will not help performance of ATX. On the other hand, if you have a 64bit processor and WIN7 64bit, up to 64GB of RAM will improve all operations able to take advantage of the 64bit platform.

I loathe Windows 8. Stick with my plan. Windows 8 storage features will mess up ATX if you have two different Hard drives. Microsoft blew it with WIN 8.

Large SSD as C:, and a 2TB second drive (D:). You can have Windows backup C: to D: so you have redundancy.

Very well stated!!!

His wife being deployed, or him being in the hospital does NOT qualify as not living with his spouse. Plain and simple. Must be a separation agreement or abandonment. MFS or MFJ are his only options and he did live with his wife for 2011. Sounds like the notice is correct and he owes the taxes. He can amend and file MFJ and may reduce the tax burden.

Another point: SS income, whether for disability or not, will be taxed at 85% if he does MFS. All SS income is subject to tax if other taxable income is high enough. On the other hand, Veterans Disability (not Social Security) income is not taxed. Be sure you know the difference, and be sure he knows what he is telling you.

Can't migrate to another drive. ATX must be installed and operate on the C: drive. Have not heard about reducing file size. I am hoping to be invited back to CAB again. The extra cost is worth it for the large SSD.

The letter will not arrive for 6-24 weeks after processing the return. The game is not over yet.

No. ATX must have the data files and operating files on the C: Drive. Buy the 500GB. Don't listen to all those that say they moved this, or moved that without issues. Lots of misunderstanding and misinformation about the way ATX does things now. Buy the big drive, and then get an additional 1 or 2 TB drive to store data from other programs on. We have 3 systems with 240GB drives and have been just fine. 500GB is much better.

I would dare to say that many of the fraudulent returns are being mailed in without any PTIN. The thieves will just get another PTIN for one of their colleagues and continue business as usual. Bottom line cause for all the fraud and the need for enforcement is the American Public DEMAND for almost instant refunds, thus opening the door for easy fraud. Take away the ability to get a refund in less than 6-10 weeks and majority of the fraud goes away. The time allows IRS to do proper and thorough screening. "But I need that refund to pay my bills." Sorry, I live on a budget and the choice not to live on a proper budget is poor judgment and not my fault. "Failure to plan on your part, does not create an emergency situation on mine.."

PMs will always be answered!! (especially for a sweet lady like you!!)

No cheerleading from me this year. I will go to all lengths necessary to make ATX work properly for me and the firm I work for. This year I will defer all requests for help to customer support at ATX. Since they were given the award for one of the top 25 in the field, I must not be doing something right. My observations and experience do not support the "top 25 award" scenario.

That sign indicates the real meaning of the response I received when I asked for more than the typical price break for the 2013 software. The 2012 debacle cost me and the firm I work for money and clients in 2012, but it has also cost me personally, the loss of 12 new clients for 2013 that I gained in 2012 because I could not process their returns in a timely manner. I took a survey, and that was the overwhelming answer why they did not return. No numbers yet from the firm, but I am sure the same thing happened there. Bottom line, the 2012 debacle caused damage to my business both in 2012, AND 2013. I believe I was able to stop the bleeding with the clients that stayed with me for 2013. Not sure how my conversation with the sales department will go for the upcoming year. For the record, my efforts to support using ATX, and helping with problems, had NO impact on their attitude about pricing. "...such a small subset of our customers..."

There must be another CCH SFS Call center than the one I used...

It is their personal residence, and only affects OIH depreciation. Value gets added to basis of the home. Then OIH percentages apply.
-
Explain that when the unit goes bad, she can claim the additional depreciation which will lower the basis in the home. Then explain that the new unit installed at that point, will start the process all over. Use lots of numbers, percentages, number of years the average homeowner stays, etc.... Ask her several times if she understands, and if she says yes, ask her to explain it to you so you can be sure that she does. This conversation will last 10 minutes max... A tried and proven method. Also, bill her for the time.
-
Add the cost to the basis of the home. The form will calculate the proper amount of depreciation.

I wonder how the IRS reacts if you tell them that? Not for me!! I review the forms to be sure the information is in the right place and makes sense.

How Much to Charge? Upfront money I'm thinking.
Jack from Ohio replied to pikester1967's topic in General Chat
Be sure to get all the notices and letters he has received from the State of Ohio concerning Sales Tax. He has received several, if he is 15 months behind. Do lots of research BEFORE you say yes. Too many gaps in the story for me... -
It would not be so funny if you were the guy using the shovel!! In my town, the snowplow comes by and plows the drive shut!!

Discount for Dependent Children of Clients?
Jack from Ohio replied to Yardley CPA's topic in General Chat
I have implemented the same process. I don't charge for students of my clients as an incentive for the kid to stay in school. Starting with 2013, each return for a student showed my full charge price, then a "Student of a Client" discount for the full amount. I want them to know what they are receiving so they won't be able to say... "Why is your fee so high?" when they are no longer students.
