  1. If audited, YOU will get dinged for knowing, but not reporting correctly AFTER the auditor disallows all those expenses. Is it worth it? Preparer penalties at $500 per item add up real fast!!! Follow the rules, or send them on their way. If they are willing to falsify that, what other items are they falsifying?? Human nature is so predictable!!
  2. Any time I give a discretionary discount, I make sure the bill shows my full costs, and then the discount I give. I want the client to know exactly what the value of my services are. This way, it can't be assumed that, if I don't give the discount next season, that I have raised my prices.
  3. If your system overheats for ANY reason, you have hardware related problems that need attention. Call a reputable computer technician. This kind of problem is not for the DIY computer person.
  4. Agree 100% with Lion. Skip middle name or initial. Use only the name that is the "first" of her last names.
  5. All are ST. I am thinking that your process is the way I will go and attach the .pdf of the 1099B.
  6. I know that if all stock sales reported on the 1099B show basis reported to IRS, we can bundle with one entry on Sch D and attach the .pdf file. I have a situation where 280 transactions show basis reported and the last 24 transactions show basis NOT reported to the IRS. Do I have to enter all transactions individually now, or can I only enter the last 24 with all the details, bundle the first 280 and send the .pdf? Has anyone else dealt with this this year? Not being able to import 1099B information is a big hindrance for certain!!
  7. Too many junk programs running in the background as well. It is a memory/system resources problem with Windows.
  8. Change the color of the input fields in the preferences of 2012 so it is visibly different than 2013. Someone on here recommended that, and it is an instant visual cue.
  9. Just say no. Problem solved. Will her utility company, grocery store, doctor, lawyer or other professional do that? If I need products of services that client has, I say: "We will trade checks, but not for free."
  10. Yes, and yes.
  11. On the server machine, go to C:Program DataCCH Small Firms ServicesATX 2013 Server There you will find the Server folders and where all the files reside for the program. If you have a server only machine, updates must be run manually by downloading the files from MYATX and running them on the server only machine.
  12. Exactly my point. So, "...a taxpayer can use any address they choose, for their convenience" had been a long standing protocol for the IRS. At least 25 years. I would be interested in knowing any State regulations that state that a taxpayer must use their current, legal, last, or whatever term you choose, address on the State tax returns?
  13. So which states' rules trump and override Federal IRS rules about Federal returns?? Simple question...
  14. So help me not be confused... The state of Oregon has the power to force tax preparers to abandon or ignore FEDERAL IRS regulations and rules concerning a FEDERAL tax return? I am missing something somewhere..... Point of reference... Same sex couples legitimately married in a state that recognizes it, yet are living in a state that does not. Prime example, Ohio. We have to create one kind of return for Federal because of the Federal rules and laws, and then create 2 DIFFERENT returns to file for the State. I was of the understanding that for Federal returns, IRS rules trump any state rules? Am I missing something??
  15. How does Oregon law have any effect on IRS rules? It is perfectly legal to use my address for a client if I choose.
  16. Ask them which they prefer, IF they can agree. If they cannot agree, use your address. The IRS will not care.
  17. If you put in the whole name, ATX will truncate and send it appropriately. It has done this since 2010.
  18. If you do one, you must do all. Otherwise, issues....
  19. Only a bank is allowed to confiscate "counterfeit" money.
  20. 2012 my net profit % was 75%. Biggest year in my 17 years. So I guess that I "broke even" on or about Feb 22, 2013 for tax year 2012. I expect it will be about the same this year.
  21. That will work if the program files are in the wrong place, or other files are in the ATXServer2013 folders. My network and home computer had NONE of the files in the wrong place. Hence, I have created a conundrum with the developers about what is causing my issues. Doing those steps are very tech oriented, and if you are not comfortable understanding exactly what the steps mean, you should NOT try to do them on your own.
  22. Now that is just what I need!! I already found out there is no going back once an updates is installed.... I will inquire.....
  23. I agree it should not be taxable. I guess my question is what is the best way to offset it on the return?
  24. I see sooooooo many issues trying to "automate" their process. If and until the son is ready to computerize all the way, you will have one giant headache after another trying to piecemeal his stuff. They should hire you or someone else as a full-time bookkeeper to keep things straight. I feel sorry for you if they ever get audited!!! I hope you are charging them well for all the headaches you are enduring....
